Shadow of Doubt lead to my first interaction with a judge, when I used Shadow of Doubt on some transmute and the other guy was adamant that discarding the card wasn't part of transmutes cost so they didn't have to discard it, or something along these lines. Love that card.

With the affinity race also lurking about. I highly recomend you also try an other unnoticed gem in Root Maze. Trust me, slam that bad boy on turn one and thier thier fetchlands have the same tempo as old granny during bingoseason. Might be one of the best sidebords in amulet titan decks that never been a thing

@@MagicAids yeah, or in a amulet deck. Either way, against a turn 1 fetchland it starts producing at turn 3 at best. Add shadow of doubt in the mix it gives you an extra turn to hold it up. Even things like borerang and other things to bounce it can work. I went for a spreading alge and urborg route for my janky deck with it and it works supringingly well!

I feel like it needs some bizzare combination of like Boomerang/Hidden Strings/Blizzard Specter/Exhaustion effects in addition to some nice bant D&T bears to really work out. Choke them on mana, then turn sideways. Feel like Arbiter just does it better at the end of the day.

Unfortunately even though Daddy is trying his best, I think wizards has been making some very poor decisions for a long time now, ever since time spiral and the original kamigawa didn't do well financially and the mentality became putting money ahead of good design. There have been a few good sets since then, but the trend is definitely toward big overpowered cards and silly gimmicks and away from thought provoking deck building and skillful play. It used to be your deck needed a focused direction to work, now it's just play all the most expensive cards.

You know what card might be as good as Shadow of Doubt? Squelch (1U; Instant; Counter target activated ability. Draw a card.) Like Shadow of Doubt, it stops fetch land searching, but it can counter Boseiju, Planeswalker loyalty abilities, Cycling, those lands that sac to draw a card, and Oblivion Stone blowing up. Possible sideboard option? Or are there enough activated abilities in modern that it'll always be good?

What makes Shadow of Doubt so good is that it's always at worst a 2 mana cantrip. Squelch can't be used unless there's an activated ability to target which isn't always guaranteed (and your opponent can play around it to let it rot in your hand).

It also doesn't help that wizard is hesitate to print Blood Moon type effects as they are with Omnath and good multi color spells. Omnath being a good commander is likely not a coincidence. Commander being a format where color restriction is absent and stax pieces are frown upon.

An esper control shell could potentially work with shadow of doubt and Ashiok, dream render in the same deck. Pair it with a bunch of discard, counters, and just misery for the opponent, it could potentially work out. Kind of like Esper D&T.

Here's the problem: Omnath IS the strongest modern card. He's got offensive power (good statline, planeswalker hate, face damage), defensive power (high toughness, lifegain), and even utility (card draw and mana generation). All for the low cost of breathing. The reason people feel so comfortable playing 5 color decks is because there's no opportunity cost to playing Omnath. He makes it so you can always afford your incarnations AND survive to play them. And if you have extras, he can be pitched for ANY of their evoke costs!

Hey, Magic Aids, love your content! Keep doing god's work trying to fix modern, Lord knows your contributions are underappreciated. I wanted to suggest some idea for a deck, but since I cannot find another channel to speak to you, I'm just gonna leave this here. I've been riffing this idea with a friend that seems right up your alley (when we first came across this, I immediately thought of you). Problem is, we're both too dumb to make it work. We're trying to make Force of Savagery and Angelic Shield work on the Omnath Elementals shell with Kaheera. We also thought of including Mass Hysteria, probably as sideboard card, to trample over slower decks. We're probably overthinking this, since MH2 elementals are just so... overpowered, but cannot stop wondering that it just might work. Anyway, thanks for everything and have a good one!

@@MagicAids I an not say since the last time I played Modern in paper we still had the Proper Affinity deck and the year before Eye of Ugin was banned. I still remember the look on the face of my opponent when I played a 7 land Goblin Charbelcher deck and I did like 40+ damage to him in one activation. I also tried to play Mazes End but that was so difficult to set up. Stopped playing because the organiser actively sabotaged me. I was trying out this 8 rack deck but half of it where proxy because I didnt have the cards, told him that I am no playing I am here for the community today, he writes me in, checks my deck and banns me for it. A year later he lost FNM status. Karma

I think a bant birds of paradise /coco /faeries build is nice. Because you can still play leonin arbiter and also do stuff like ghost quarter or boseju their stuff. Very hard to build tho. The niv deck seemed decent tho. Another route to take this deck would be to just slam some kavus in there and spank your opponents with domain cards

I've always liked Shadow of Doubt, but if you're just using it to stop fetches it doesn't do much after the first two turns. You may as well be running a Mardu LD deck instead at that point. You could always try the "classic" Maralen + Doubt + Isochron combo with Mindlock Orb backup but I'm sure it's too slow and fragile for the current Modern. You could also try some weird "impulse draw" with Red to get around the "no card draw" drawback now that that's more prevalent. Not really sure; just spitballing ideas.

Shadow of doubt does certainly work best in the 1st 2 turns! with general Ferrous, the idea is for shadow doubt to have some late-game value as well!

Boseiju, Who Endures screwed with your game plan more than once, and it seems like it would have fit your game plan, but I'm guessing it didn't fit . Maybe going more all in on the land disruption plan might counter these 5c piles better and you can include cards like Boseiju, Who Endures?
