I started playing towards the end of Time Spiral block. The entire purpose of that block's story was to set up for the introduction of planeswalker cards. So while planeswalkers are inherently and intentionally special to players, they hold even more significance to me.

Funny historical note: in the caw blade era Jace Beleren was mostly played as anti Jace, the Mind Sculptor tech. The old rules made it so that if you had JB in play and your opponent cast JtMS both went to the graveyard before your opponent could activate theirs. So caw blade decks would add 1-3 JB to get "Jace advantage" in the mirror and budget decks often ran a playset as "seal of Jace." Actually, UW control would occasionally do this before caw blade was invented but until the meta became entirely centralized there was actual opportunity cost for doing so.

Jace of Mysteries ultimate technically isn't redundant because even if Jace gets killed the effect still is on the stack. For example if you have 4 cards in your deck and you cast a X draw spell for 5, Jace can be instant killed making you lose. If you use the ultimate instead, even if he dies, you still have the wincon on the stack, so you win.

It's not only because of him getting killed in response, it's also because he dies to his ultimate if he is at exactly 8 loyalty, removing his static effect before you draw the cards. So the win the game clause in the ultimate is super important to make the card play out intuitively.

@@eirh but how does it work if your library has less than 7 cards in it? Let's say Jace is at 8 loyalty and your library has 4 cards in it. You ult Jace, which sends him to the bin, you draw the last 4 cards but still have 3 to draw. Jace is no longer on the field to say "If you would draw a card while your library has no cards in it, you win the game instead." and the ult hasn't finished resolving yet as it should still draw 3 more cards (it's not "draw up to 7 cards" it's "draw 7 cards"). Does the fact we're trying to draw from an empty library for cards # 5, 6 and 7 make us lose the game still? The win the game effect on the ult applies after drawing the 7 cards, not while we're drawing (or trying to draw) them.

@@kaszael 104.3c If a player is required to draw more cards than are left in their library, they draw the remaining cards and then lose the game the next time a player would receive priority. You only lose to drawing the cards after the effect finishes resolving, so everything's fine

While OG jace was good, his main home was against JTMS. Due to the old walker rule you playing 3 mana jace means your Opp playing JTSM just kills them both. So he was a kill spell for JTMS

Remember, Jace Beleren was mainly played in standard as a sideboard card to kill JTMS due to the old Legendary Rule. Baby Jace was often just the JTMS killer :)

That was not really the legendary rule, the rule said there could be only one Planeswalker of each type in play. So, unlike now, JTMS and Jace Beleren could not exist next to one another because they both have type "Jace". As Jace Beleren is one mana cheaper than JTMS, it would often come down earlier than JTMS, giving its controller some card advantage while forcing the opponent to either use removal on Jace, waste an attack on Jace, or cast JTMS to kill it.

Jace, Wielders ultimate is redundant because ulting it at 8 makes it leave the battlefield, and if it just drew 7 you would die on an empty library because it leaves before the ability resolvrs

I was going to say this too. He dies to state-based action if you ult him at 8 loyalty, thus you deck yourself if the extra line is not printed on his ult. Otherwise, you'd need to have 9 loyalty to have a chance - then if your opponent shocks jace with ult on stack, you deck yourself and lose. Not intended game design to get screwed by your own planeswalker ult.

I liked this video, but I almost expected a blurp at the start saying "look, we all know which card will be #1, as I've done a Top Planeswalkers list, and he topped that, regardless of color identity, but sometimes it can be fun to see what gives the top a fair run for its money, even if it doesn't dislodge the champion." Even without that, I knew what would top it. I actually didn't expect so many Jaces; not sure why, since he sort is THE Blue Planeswalker, but I feel like the biggest surprise was #2. I honestly didn't think such a new Planeswalker card would stomp so many Jaces, to hit just below the one we all saw coming, when several of the Jaces have had so much more time. It is nice to see!

I was honestly half suspecting all the Jace cards to stacked up at number one so there would be more variety like has been done with some of the other dominant cards. Though I guess there are enough variance between the Jaces to make it meaningful. Though I do wonder what the overall score for Jace is.

Seeing Jace the Sub Sculptor reminded me that I really still want Wizards to make more fateseal cards. It doesn't have to be a lot nor being more than fateseal one or two because it's such a powerful mechanic, but having only two cards that actually have as a keyword (and ones that never really get played) seems like something that should change. Or older cards with it should be errata'd to use the keyword to give the keyword some recognition. Like I would love to see a Sensei's Divining Top type card where you can tap it and fateseal 1. I don't know if that already would be too powerful, but it would just be so cool to me to see that come into existence.

All the chatter around the un bannings for Jace and SFM has been both fascinating and annoying. All the hot takes like How Jace was considered a bad card in 2020 magic or that because SFM and Jace didn’t immediately take over modern after their un bans, that totally means Pod and Splitnter twin are now totally healthy cards and should be unbanned :^).
