Seeing a creature with plainswalk made me think I had never seen a with plainswalk. So I looked it up and found what has to be a contender for worst card ever (or at least worst card without a negative effect), Great Wall from Legends. It is a white enchantment that turns off plainswalk and nothing else. At the time it was printed it did exactly two things: 1. to hate on Righteous Avengers which was the only creature with plainswalk, 2. when played in a mono-white deck it was hate against a non-existent landwalk based deck depended on Magical Hack. To date, only 5 creatures have plainswalk, so it didn't get better with age.

True, but one of those five cards is Graceful Antelope, so clearly that makes it good. (Okay, not really, but I do tend to name Antelope whenever I just want a random creature type that I am sure will never affect a game.)

I would argue ignoble soldier is pretty good, you attack with creatures your opponents want to kill and then they either take 3 damage or you prevent all damage meaning that creatures with “whenever this creature attacks” or whatnot will be easier to use. There are other options though

I think I would actually prefer the Ignoble Soldier to Righteous Avengers or Numai Outcast. At least it's not as expensive, and it can still sacrifice itself to take down something of equal mana cost when blocking or attack when the board is wide open. Still does not make it not bad, but at least it's "only" 3 mana.

Agreed, if you think of it as having defender and it loses defender when your opponents have no untapped creatures, it's... well, still awful but better than some of the other things on the list.

When I first saw Ignoble Soldier, my brain fluctuated for a bit and I thought it said: "prevent all damage dealt TO it", which would have made it a good card in limited since it can bash but not die. But alas, it wasnt meant to be. To add insult to injury, it's a "Soldier" type, not a Rebel or Mercenary, so that means you can't recruit it for some ambush shenanigans (i mean, 3/1 in limited CAN still take down a decent number of creatures). It was really one of those cards that I dont know what the designers were thinking, at the same time i dont WANT to know either. I did, however, run it in the pre-release limited tournament back in the middle ages bec there was a 40 card minimum and my best cards were White and Blue: but I was short ONE card... although i think i should have ran Heart of Ramos (a mana rock that adds R) instead Fun fact about Righteous Avengers tho: until Graceful Antelope from Odyssey Block was released, it was the only creature to have the Plainswalk ability... making cards like Great Wall and Lord Magnus feel silly for doing pretty much nothing. You could argue that it stops an enchantment from Homelands named Aysen Highway (WWW3, EN, All white creatures have plainswalk), but... would anyone be running that?

I find it's best not to ask what the designers of Mercadian Masques were thinking, aside from "let's not make more cards as broken as Urza Block." That way madness lies. BTW, if you're looking for more "top 10 cards from this otherwise awful set" candidates, Masques block is fertile ground, as all of those sets (Nemesis a little less so, but Prophecy was just god-awful) are among the worst ever printed.

based on the name, art, and flavor text, my guess with the soldier is that it's meant to convey its lack of actual combat skill, with that 3 power representing that it's _still_ a dude with a heavy weapon that can beat the shit out someone defenseless or caught off guard - but in an actual fight? dude can't land a blow before going down i can't, however, explain why it's a whole 3 mana, nor why it doesn't at least have first strike so that it could actually "ambush" whatever it blocks

Poor Ignoble Soldier. Loses almost every battle. At least he can walk away from ineffectively glaring at most walls. He can even survive combat with a 0/1 Plant. Yes, in a vicious duel to the death against a stalk of celery, he can hold his own and cause a draw.

The one time I saw Numai Outcast in EDH it was in a Vilis Broker of Blood deck, which proceeded to draw like 15 cards off of it and power out a Skirge Familiar. Bad things happened from there.

I've been playing Magic and building decks since 98 and naturally have tried to always build the best decks I could. As with many players, though, I didn't quite get a grasp of the game's strategy for a few years (after discovering how real tournament decks were being built). Now that I am an old man, my wife and I just play for fun, and since we don't really get much joy out of building top tier tournament decks to smash each other's faces, we now build goofy tribal decks and decks with silly sub themes. Anyways, I just wanted to point out that this list probably has the most cards that we have played out of any of your top 10 worsts. One more fun thing... I started playing around the time of Mercadian Masques and Ignoble Soldier really confused me because I thought I was just not understanding how MTG worked bc why would WotC print something THAT BAD!? Hahahha. To be fair, there were a lot of crap cards in that block. Awesome channel, love the content as always.

Veldrane was the first card I saw that made me soften my view on Shaodin Dryads. Nearly every green forestwalking creature does it cheaper and more efficiently, and even if you have to use other cards to make them more effective. Zombie Master and an evil presence was much more effecient. Even Bog Wraith and Evil Presence still did it cheaper and more effectively. Creature Type wasn't really a thing back then, unless you had the tiny handful of Lords, none of which effected Legends (he hadn't been erratad as human yet). So unless you were building a black Walk Deck, nobody played him, and even then you'd be hard pressed to validate that decision.

I think Ignoble Soldier was designed as a blocker. Like the art depicts - the soldier ambushes whoever comes across. So from a flavor point of view the card isn't even that bad...even if it still isn't good by any means. I found the Outcast to be worth, considering that by the time it was printed, normal 20life games where the most prominent games and this one took you down by 1/4 if you want to regenerate it.

I really do believe that early R&D thought that "multi color > mono color" because that is where most modern multi-colored concepts came from. It seems like the reaction to this idea (in the form of awful vanilla multicolored legends) was the answer. But time has, obviously, shown us that mana restriction/enabling is irrelevant, and a good card in a vacuum often becomes a good card in a meta. If you want to make a good card, it almost seems easy. A bad card, on the other hand, is a work of art and almost considered a relic. One that captures a thought process of a certain era. Like a time capsule. These bad cards are time capsules.

why was numai outcast higher than takeno's cavalry? isn't the ability arguably as good/better than takeno's, while having bushido 2? is conditional deal 1 to a spirit actually better than bad regenerate to the point that it outweighs being a strictly worse blocker/attacker?

the cavalry can at least repeatedly impact the board state, if only conditionally, for solely the upfront cost of summoning it. meanwhile, the outcast is just an overcosted beatstick ... that deals barely any damage to face _and_ will die to absolutely anything if it's not in the middle of beating up another creature. which, yeah, it can regenerate ... at the cost of turning whatever minor thing your opponent used to ping it into a lava axe straight to your face. that _you_ paid mana for!

You got the rules for Ignoble Soldier wrong. You made it seems like IS does no damage if it is blocked. Actually, it says that ALL combat damage is prevented, so no attacking creatures and no blocking creatures do any damage. Still terrible, but it doesn't die if it is blocked.
