Compared to what? The best evasion equipment out there is Whispersilk Cloak at 5, followed by a bunch of other 4s: nonbasic-landwalk, only by walls, menace, fear, etc. Unlike all of those, this one at least gives a damage boost. I agree with you when comparing this to Aqueous Form (my personal favorite) for one blue mana, but since it is blue, blue must be in the commander's identity and if your commander leaves the battlefield, the enchantment is gone. Equipment does not have such issues (most equipment anyway). I run this equipment in my Hope of Ghirapur deck and it has won me many games. I agree that this card isn't very good midgame, but early and late game it can put serious pressure/finish an opponent.

Reach exists and is alive and healthy, just like banding - oh wait... Chances are as good to go against a Chaosphere as going against a reach creature that withstands a Voltron in the face.

Nice list, even though I don't really get your hate for Skyblinder Staff. Sure, it's not a great card (obviously), but it still offers a minor power boost plus evasion and works really nice when equipped to your own flyers. So yeah, it's clearly better than the rest of the list.

If you do unbalanced cycles (which is a great idea) definetly do the “boon” cycle. (Healing salve, giant growth, lightning bolt, dark ritual, ancestral recall)

I run it in my Orzhov deck, which really really cares about things dying. I'm purposely throwing zombie tokens at things that I know will kill them, because a zombie token dying is just straight up beneficial to me. It gains me life, it gains me counters, it gains me more zombie tokens, and as icing on the cake it lets me return stuff from my graveyard. Oh and it also deals a bunch of non-combat damage to all of my opponents. Doesn't even need provoke, a 6/2 is usually enough reason for people to want to block.

I read siren song lyre as "4: tap one of your creatures and the opponent's creatures". So basically like an inefficient af 'removal' that can maybe be used multiple times a turn, maybe if you flood out in sealed or draft or sth

I could see Thirsting Axe having a use Like putting it on something that can easily get scary + overwhelming where it's in your opponent's best interest to block because you're swinging for lethal with it

Siren Song Lyre saw some Limited play in the Theros block, simply because that block was all about creating a huge monster with Heroic and Bestow - and because most removal sucked at actually dealing with said monsters. The Lyre certainly wasn't good, but I saw it sneak in as the 22nd or 23rd playable quite a few times.

I can think of one reason I would run skyblind staff. To make a flyer unblockable in one of two commander decks. Isperia or medomia sphinx commander for redundancy.

Sparring collar plus any creature with deathtouch is a pretty decent interaction especially with the ability to equip at instant speed. Thirsting axe can be used as a sacrifice engine and I think that was one of the reasons it was printed

"Engine" is a really strong word for the Axe. There are tons of better ways to give a deathtouch creature first strike.

For peregrine mask, there's a equipment from theros that allows Defender creatures to attack. And provides a nice stat boost.gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?multiverseid=194916 Warmonger's Chariot (Rise of the Eldrazi) - Gatherer - Magic ... Edit, the axe can be moved during your second main phase. If you have a blocked creature (or a creature with lure/provoke) no sacrifices. Also it's not such a big deal if the creature has undying or persist. Especially the double striking undying creature.

If I'm remembering right, Siren Song Lyre actually had an important home in Theros limited. Admittedly, it was only as a sideboard card against the heroic decks, but unlike a lot of this list, it had a real purpose, instead of being truly useless.

I feel like Pauper EDH and more limited places like Magic Duels could be avenues where cards like this get played.. Personally, I started playing magic with a Roterothopter equipped with skyblinder staff for "basically unblockable", riot gear, bladed bracers cause they're cool, and tormentor's trident to make it into a big scary Thop.

Healers headdress was actually quite good in it's limited format. It makes combat an absolute nightmare and since everything in that block was quite small the +2 toughness and 1 damage prevention were more effective than they would be usually

Thirsting Axe did some work for me in limited in a deck with token producers and a couple of Sanitarium Skeletons. Outside of that, yeah, s'not so good.

Sram doesn't care about "better" he only cares about "cheap". He's never paying equip costs. He's just sacking them to KCI. Being able to move at instant-speed totally makes collar better, it just doesn't make it enough better.

I have thirsting axe in my edh deck, my commander is Jarad; Golgari Lich Lord. I use it to pump up creatures, attack, sacrifice to Jarad to deal damage to each opponent before end step

It might be a fun challenge to take a card that ranked #1 in some Worst category and make a deck around it, at least in flavor or function. So, for Thirsting Axe, maybe a bunch of Unearth, tokens, or hasty boyos to try and blitz your opponent, even if you don't have the axe.

Skybinder's staff is all about the unblockability, equip it into a flying commander and you have an unblockable commander dealing commander damage with ultra high evasion

Healer's headress does have a slight niche in mono white swarm decks: Since it's the creature that taps not the equipment, And since the equipment can be moved around at instant speed, IF you have a lot of white Mana, And IF you have a lot of creatures, You can spend Mana to block damage independently of your creatures*, up to a certain point. Not saying that redeems it, but it should at least get pointed out. *Especially as it could theoretically be used as a combat trick: 5 1/1's stopping 10 dmg from a trampler just as ONE relevant example.

Like any card its power can really be dependent on the deck. The #9 on this list "Peregrin Mask" is one of the best cards in my EDH Phenax deck as it runs as many 1 and 2 drop death touchers I can find in the format. My meta's hate for mill is real and usually make me target numeral uno. They usually don't want to swing into my death touchers which gives me the time I need and death touchers that win without dying in combat and can block flying is unreal. Obviously defender isn't an issue.

Number 9 will find its niche with arcades decks in edh. Like number 10, which is usefull if you got a flyer (maybe your commander) and the enemy not running reach which you mostly find in green decks, mask of avacyn on it and you got a combo that needs board wipes or similiar things. Its all about perspective really but i understand that those niche cards are not comparable with the top tier universally good equipment cards.

I know how to fix Thirsting Axe...just fuse it with Grifter's Blade. A flash +4/+0 that equips to a blocker wouldn't be terrible. You essentially either trade, or surprise kill their attacker, and for the first turn at least, your creature won't be sacced because it dealt damage to an attacker. Then, it stays on the field, and maybe gives you the final 4 points you need a few turns down the line.

With Thirsting Axe you could take control of an opponents creature with a hijack effect and then equip and swing. If they don't block it dies and they take four extra damage. I could see it working in a deck like that.

I actually liked Rampage, it seemed like a control or midrange strategy of preventing your opponent from double or triple blocking. I just thought they made the creatures too overcosted, as you said.

Grifter's Blade can trigger target effects or effects on cards that care about equipment. The +1/+1 is just a bonus.

I use Skyblinder Staff in my Brago deck to avoid flying blockers (which seem more common than reach blockers). The reason I avoid the Whispersilk Cloth is because it's just a huge attention-grabber and gets destroyed as easily.

I actually run the thursting axe in a devil deck. I summon devil tokkens, give them trampel. So enemy has to block, or not but damage will come through. If the devil dies, another damage plus and imdont care. I also used that devil 6/1 with haste that sacrefices on end of turn and can choose a blocker. Its not a great deck but fun hehe

I only have one question: isn't it possible to equip the axe to a new creature, during your post-combat main phase, who has dealt combat damage? If that's the case, wouldn't that prevent you from sacrificing the creature originally equipped?

Doublesided cards aren't a card type, they are cards that have two sides (well, two face sides, the back side of a normal Magic card is a side as well). But yea, Equipment is only "new" compared to the types that have been around since the start of the game and Mana Source (remember Mana Source?), it's older than the later types. More importantly, Equipment isn't a type, it's a subtype. And Equipment is just about the oldest subtype that isn't a creature type or land type.

Repeatable card draw, and there's a few combos it can pull off thanks to its repeated ETBs (it's nasty with Paradox Engine and can do some instant win combos with that, although "is nasty with paradox engine" isn't precisely uncommon.). It's bad, but the niche it has is admittedly a potent one.

You can stack Thirsting Axe with cards like Viashino Sandstalker and have it bounce before it dies, or Ball Lightning which would die anyway. In a hasty red EDH, I could actually see using it alongside such cards as Grafted Wargear or Vulshok Gauntlets simply because of having similar effects stack. In any case...in no universe, in my opinion, is Thirsting Axe worse than Healer's Headdress or Sparring Collar.

I always found redundancy to help themes in EDH. Even otherwise bad cards can work in a pinch if you are trying for a very specific goal. And it's not like +4/+0 to a Ball Lightning isn't actually scary.

So imagine this, you have 3 creatures one with thirsting axe equipped. You swing in and they let the equipped creature go unblocked to kill it, but chump block your other two dudes. In your post combat main could you equip one of the creatures that got chump blocked (and dealt dmg to a creature) to avoid sacrificing anything? I mean I know it's still bad but you could sneak in 4+n damage that way

Siren song was a really not that bad. Can tap down multiple creatures every turn, I just found it very useful in theros limited, if you can survive boros heroic. Skyblinder making flying unblockable also a not that bad.

Username Unidentified Nope, that's not how EDH works. Because there are red mana symbols on the text box, for EDH purposes, the color identity of the card is Red. Sram's color identity is only White, so you can't play it.

anosmianAcrimony you can pay the equip cost to attach or un-attach equipment. It's not like an enchantment where it's permanently stuck on a creature. This is why Equipment can be pretty flexible.

Actually, believe it or not I have a deck that runs 2 copies of Skyblinder Staff. It's a deck where every creature has both Flying and Vigilance. Equiping that makes them almost unblockable.

I often wonder if cards like Thirsting Axe and Razor Boomerang had previous versions during development that were so oppressively powerful that the dev team nerfs the hell out of them to be extra safe. I just can't imagine someone pitching a card like Razor Boomerang with stats like that. The phenomenon could be called "Skullclampophobia"

Tons of cards have earlier versions, so probably. At the same time, Wizards DOES intentionally make cards that aren't good, or are only good in combination with certain things.

Thirsting axe with zombies, tokens or dredge. Or even in a limited deck with a bunch of vanilla creatures. +4 attack is nothing to sneeze at (although there is MUCH better equipment overall to be fair).

I would equip Peregrine Mask to Wall of Flames, a 4-1 first-strike, flier that was already a wall to begin with. This would run well in a Vehicle deck.

Peregrine Mask would probably only work in an Arcades Defender deck if you're running one of the old walls that doesn't actually say defender on it.
