Can you do a "Top 10 cards that saw no standard or block play"? Basically, what are the ten best cards in magic that had standard legality but _only_ have points in eternal formats? This means that cards that were only ever released in supplementary products, such as modern horizons or commander, would not be elligible for the list. Ideally, cards that were originally printed in supplemental sets that achieved eternal format success, but were later reprinted in a standard environment, would also be excluded but that's more of a "wishlist" item, so to speak.

I know there's always the caveat of some of these cards working in super niche scenarios, but one such scenario would be that Martyr's Tomb with Selenia, then paying down to 13 and switching life totals with someone, knocking them out with Triskaidekophobia and Axis of Mortality or something similar.
@FlawlessRhythmGG4 жыл бұрын

To get an idea of how bad Merfolk of the Depths is, Boon Satyr was printed in the very next set and cost 1GG for a 4/2 flash that also had Bestow 3GG. Now Boon Satyr is a strong rare and Merfolk of the Depths is a filler uncommon, but a lot of that strength comes from Bestow. Merfolk probably would have been fine at 1{G/U}{G/U}. That's knocking 3 off the mana cost to make a card that's just OK. And man, Simic could really have used the extra power in Gatecrash draft.

6:10 ah, Steelleaf Paladin, my first multicolored. I started playing around Onslaught/Mirrodin blocks, which was right around the time when creatures started to be good in their own right (though this was about the most significant such step, in later years creatures would of course become even better), i.e. when every multicolored tended to be almost at-rate and green creatures were always at minimum at-rate. So when I got the Steelleaf Paladin from an earlier set I was profoundly confused, because it was a French Vanilla 4/4 with a downside. I thought "It costs 6 but is otherwise a French Vanilla, does that mean the Enters-the-Battlefield effect is a positive?" I didn't really compute in my 13 years old brain that, for such already high costs, it was intended as an additional cost.

Invasion block was so cool because of strong multicolored cards, which had mostly been weak until then. I remember as a little kid being so disappointed with those Legends cards. Merfolk of the Depths is a terrible constructed card, but it's fine in its intended limited environment. That's because other Simic cards had the Evolve mechanic, where if another creature enters the battlefield with higher power than the original creature, it gets a +1/+1 counter. You generally couldn't activate Evolve at instant speed, making Merfolk of the Depths a combat trick in addition to being a creature.

Can someone please explain to me why “Malicious Advice” is on this list (at number 8)? I mean is the card amazing? No, but it is still somewhat effective. As Nizzahon said it can still have somewhat an impact on the game. Given the card would be so much better if it had the option to not untap during your untap step (like that older ability seen in Amber Prison) so you could keep the permanents tapped. I think #2 has it's (very) niche use. If you for some reason want your opponent to draw cards, like Underworld Dreams, for example, this is not a bad card. Ofcourse it should be that you and defending player draws, or it should be a 5/5, for sure it is terrible, but that's some times what makes magic great, that there are card that can fill tons of very niche uses. Can't wait till some one makes a totally busted deck with that 1 black mana, discard your hand card. For sure the worst card ever right? For now... For now :)

Malicious Advice is funny, because giving people in your playgroup the advice to run Malicious advice would be malicious.

Was about to write something long about how did you miss 2/3rds of an entire block in this (Legends). Then you basically put them all at #1 bad

I'm guessing not much though went into making gold cards in legends, nothing like a two color 7 mana craw worm lol

I was wondering where the Legendary creatures in Legends were.

I think you left out Kangee, Aerie Keeper 4 mana for a 2/2 flier most of the time. Turning him into a lord is so expensive!
@Reboundary4 жыл бұрын
Kangee still probably has a couple of hundred of edhrec decks to their name.

Wow... you went a little hard on both harbor guardian and the wurm. Sure, they could’ve been better but in my opinion, you could do that with harbor guardian by only giving it flying. If the wurm was one less mana, it would even be a decent rare in limited.

At least Steel Leaf Paladin grew up to become Steel Leaf Champion, a much better creature.

Saying that Marty's Tomb is a bad card just shows a huge lack of creativity on your end. It may not be the most effective cards in the world, but it has some neat tricks: 1. Combine with Horobi, Death's Wail for free removal. 2. Get to an odd life number and win with Near-Death Experience 3. Exchange life total cards Probably a lot of things I am missing

The only way mountain Titan is any good is if you use black spells that have storm.

I genuinely don't understand why there would be two cards with that are essentially identical in all but colors and have one just have one more power than the other. I know magic design was very different back then but like... they understood the appeal of cycles and symmetry. Why in the world would you make a 7 mana 6/5 and a 7 mana 5/5 in the same set with similar theming and the same type of mana cost? It just... feels so wrong
