Hi again! Huge thanks for giving Resurgence the luxury MtPain27 treatment, always an honour. It’s a weird feeling looking back on these maps many years later, probably because it gives me a sense of the progressive changes in mapping skills, life, and time altogether. I think I’ve said this somewhere but I’d have redone Map30. I was so burnt out after completing Map27, 28, 18 in a row, and I had Map29 and 30 left to do. (Also makes you realise why Skillsaw is such an apt name because the dude really is a machine churning out quality non-stop. ) It was a miracle I made Map29 properly. When I started Map30, I had this idea in my head that it was going to be a kind of super-hard epic fractured reality map where SoD’s Map31’s techscape and 32’s pyramid motifs clashed and combined together, but I couldn’t muster up any creativity or energy. Not going to lie, I initially copypasted 5000+ revenants in one area out of desperation and frustration, and Ribbiks went “Really?” and gave me a figurative slap on the head. I swear mappers are only as good as their playtesters. If it weren’t for them… yeah. Also, about Map7’s name…yeah well, to quote Homer Simpson: “Wait a minute, Map07 should’ve been named Gantlet? I’ve been calling her Gauntlet! Why didn’t someone tell me! Oh, I’ve been making an idiot of myself!”

I should have mentioned your dual inspiration for MAP 30, I remember reading that in your text file. And my god, 5000 revenants, that sounds wild. Thank you for making Resurgence, there are some truly beautiful and rollicking maps in this set. It was a pleasure to cover, and to play thrice!

Awesome maps man! I haven't played this WAD yet but definitely will now. Regarding gauntlet vs gantlet, I know it's become a running gag on this channel but if you're actually curious about the distinction gantlet is an antiquated spelling but can still be correctly pronounced with a "gon" (like how the "ant" is in Immanuel Kant). That said, further complicating things language evolves and the "gan" pronunciation was actually how it was originally pronounced before "gon", became more common. That's why even with the "gantlet" spelling some dictionaries list both styles of pronunciation. Even FURTHER complicating things is "gauntlet" is a much more common spelling now despite being a completely different word from the "gauntlet" that means glove. In fact it's believe thats why the "gon" pronunciation took over. The etymology of "gantlet" is from a Swedish word for passageway. It's come to mean ordeal, like "running the gantlet" and some style guides like the LA Times actually still use it. The other "gauntlet" is from french and means armored glove, like how a challenge starts by "throwing down the gauntlet". They're completely different words and as mentioned some style guides still prefer the spelling "gantlet" do distinguish it from gauntlet. But most don't. Language is weird haha. TL;DR Gantlet is a correct way of spelling it, so is Gauntlet. MtPains pronunciation is correct, but the "gon" pronunciation of gantlet is also correct. So this isn't a Mrs. Krandle situation :-). It's a twisted history of language being weird.

Was such a great feeling listening to that MIDI for The Library while listening to you talk about Doom and seeing hundreds of people, including tons of Doom legends, in the live chat.. I was laughing a lot and generally enjoying the video, but I had this brief little emotional moment, thinking of being a kid coming into the community and hearing Doomsayers talking about the modding scene being on the way out.. Only for it to still be thriving so many years later. Thanks so much for making the great content you do, dude.

The way you phrased this reminded me how the challenge wad Abandon was conceived as a continuation of Sunder, which was itself conceived as a megawad, but which had apparently been abandoned by its author, Insane Gazebo, with only 14 maps complete. The Abandon team got a fair way into their work when suddenly Insane Gazebo came back and kept adding to Sunder, making the original point moot. IG even drew them a title screen!

I worked over 13 hours yesterday, until around 9 AM this morning. I was stressed, depressed, angry and exhausted. I have been feeling exhausted for months, but last night felt especially bad. Went to bed and woke up at sound 4:30 AM and hoping to God no one would call me, and I still felt tired and sleep deprived. Still, noticing a new episode of Dean of Doom was uploaded immediately put a smile on my face. All the stress and resentment I felt were scrubbed by your eloquence and love for this game (that I really should play some more as I haven't played new wad in months). The sheer dedication and passion you have for this game and your content makes it all worth it. That's not to say I'm not due for some lifestyle changes, but Dean of Doom and other folks like decino and Doom Kid bring me the kind of joy that I have not felt for many, many years now. So, thank you for this, thank you for introducing us to this wonderful new wad, and I hope you have a fantastic weekend. Thank you for making my life so much better. :)

MAP31 is probably one of my favourite combinations of map and music ever. Visually this is quite a muted map, it's not particularly colourful with the browns, greys, and red everywhere, and combined with the low lighting it really gives off this bleak, withered atmosphere, and Stuart's "Day of Mourning" emphasises this PERFECTLY. I played Resurgence a fair bit when it was new, mostly in co-op, and since quite a few years have passed since then, I have to say this episode was bringing back a lot of memories, and reminding me of maps I had forgotten about, but not MAP31, that for me has always been the #1 map that has come to mind when thinking of Resurgence. Incredible work from Joshy and stewboy. Great episode as always :)

Great first ep of the season! I liked the new classroom in front of Mt Pain in the beginning, and the new tiers of difficulty examples. This WAD is a rare case of being a full 32-level megaWAD that I know for a fact I haven't played. I'm not sure why. I did Speed of Doom and the maps I remember most from it are Joshy's, so you'd think I'd check this one out. Based on the footage here, it does look a little more refined and mature from SoD's set. Looks very tough too, but I think I could manage. Overall, it looks pretty fun. Oddly enough, map 18 in this reminds me a lot of his map 11 from CC4, which I remember as being way too dark, long, and boring, so that's not a greatest sign, lol. Hopefully it's not like that at all! I'm not really in the mood for megaWADs at the moment (says the guy currently playing through RAMP finally), but I'll add it to the list. Also, idk if you saw, but Cyriak just released his first WAD since Going Down: Overboard. It's only 6 maps, so nice Sawed Off Wads material.

Love the new intro with the classroom in front of Mount pain and the little explanation of difficulty is nice for the newbies to the channel to give context to the grades didn't realise speed of doom had a spiritual sequel so this is an absolute must play for me now lol speed of doom was where I really grew to apriciate slaughter maps although the gimmicks of the secret maps in SOD seem much stronger than the secret maps in this wad but it still looks great

Resurgence is one of those cases that still haunts me as I'm struggling to get through Map11. Yet, at the same time I can't help but feel a sense of excitement to see Joshy with his own megawad.

Found about about Resurgence from your video here, and it's quickly become one of my favorites, so thanks for that! I remember hearing Joshy talk in his interview with Nirvana about establishing a sense of place in each of his maps, and now I can definitely see that on replay. Mt. Katoomba has to be my favorite, but the run from Technoprison II to Breaking Point is just metal af. Incredible fights in those maps. The underground ice cave in Breaking Point is pure nightmare fuel tho. This is definitely a desert island WAD for me, for not only its gameplay but its soundtrack too

I put this review off until I had finished Resurgence myself to avoid spoilers. I had coincidentally started playing it the exact same day this video dropped! But after countless distractions and breaks from it due to a busy schedule I finally finished it last night. Awesome WAD and your review was very well written and enjoyable to watch as always. I really enjoyed Joshy's massive and open maps as a contrast to his small Speed of Doom maps, you can really see how he tried to compensate for Darkwave's absence. I think my 5 favorites in no order were 11, 32, 19, 22, and 27. That finale was just wild! I almost had to start over as well since I used up every bit of health before acquiring the last key. Great work on this video! It made for a nice reward after finishing the WAD.

As soon as I saw this was a Josh Sealy megawad I knew I had to play the whole thing before I could watch this video... and what a treat it was! Thank again for recommending another great megawad! Although I really enjoyed Resurgance I think The Library really takes the cake for me. Something about the midi, impressive views, and excess of Arch-Viles in the main area really hit all the right notes with me. Looking forward to more!

A worthy season opener! I've only formed solid impressions (often from watching streams) on some select maps here, but yeah right from the start E1 takes some effort to start liking the wad! Twi-Lite Massacre is absolutely more than just a cheap redux and it is a perfect send-off of Hell, far better than Joshy's other two episode ends in this wad. I think he does particularly well on these final Hellish maps because The Ruins of Kalnik also ranks highly among Hellish Joshy maps for me (once you know the way of play, of course). Was glad that one got its A- in graduation. Festering Wicked Helix Sector is more very weird and interesting than truly amazing, but definitely deserves the A- with its ambitions and a good job at imitating Xaser's maps. (I recommend Forsaken Overlook, it is easily my favorite Secret Santa map and as a standalone level would make for Sawed Off material.) stewboy's midi would go on to find excellent use in Hellport. Poison Oak stands as your Go 2 It like super secret map and hits the landing well, I must say I like it about equally to Gutter Grave because it's more varied. Not peak darkwave, but it is definitely no letdown. The midi from BTSXE2's awesome and similarly brutal bonus stage is perfect. Quadrilateral Rampage looked so interesting but it would be a lot better with a BFG and some more cells, and Waves of Darkness' ending just looks cheap and dumb. Especially unnecessary when Joshy is trying to do a darkwave imitation (hinted at not so subtly in the title lol). The last two maps from the wad that I'm familiar with are Nuclear Winter and Technoprison II, I love the later and I appreciate the former as a breather sort of adventure/nostalgia trip map, it kept me entertained despite its lack of combat highs. Both also scored by originally CC4 midis, Nuclear Winter's would find another strong use in 180MPV. Looking forward to more! 😀

Joining in and watching the opening was a shock cause of the new classroom, tier grading graphic and Rules text (But I dig em with the ever increasing production value). Doomguy's snarky comments also got a bit of a chuckle out of me. But just like last season the opening wad fires on all cylinders and doesn't let up the pressure from neither Joshy or the Dean.

While Speed of Doom tested my focus, Resurgence was a patience test. It taught me how to extend my strategies in a way that I can handle hordes of high class monsters without slipping my fingers out of rush. I love many of Joshy's improvments that were clearly born from his experience in previous projects, but my only issue with Resurgence is the novelty of using custom monsters that could potentially destroy a vanilla Doom player's muscle memory. It just doesn't work that well for me in this particular wad. Good luck with Season 3!

This Megawad is so, so, so good! I absolutely love the throwbacks and general homage to Speed of Doom and Community Chest 4, two of my all time favorite Megawads! So many good maps and fantastic Midis that really just seal the deal of an incredibly well made Megawad that has an undeniable amount of love and passion put in it. Definitely want to try it again with my heavily modded BDLite, Smooth Doom SE (really just there for added ambience) and slightly better weapon balancing... Also RIP my framerate when shit hits the fan on the slaughter maps and it chokes my RTX 2060 lmao

Now here we go for the third season ! I have the impression that you wanted to give an A+ on some maps and ended up not doing so. I'm thinking in particular of maps 18 and 22. I was actually expecting an A+ on these maps and was surprised each time that this was not the case. I wouldn't be surprised if these maps were upgraded to A+ during the graduations as you did for Scythe 2 map 30 or JC's map in TN.

Brilliant wad, brilliant episode. Twi-Lite Massacre is a top 10 map for me, I just love its fast paced, but relatively easy-going slaughter. I can't say I agree on the rating for map24, as much as I love Speed of Doom, the way the maps are connected feels a bit clumsy to me. Good to see you back. Lol, "gauntlet" Would you consider trying Heretic sometime? It suffers a bit from underpowered weapons relative to the HP of the monsters but it's still a classic and the gameplay is extremely similar to Doom's so it would be easy to pick up.

resurgence is a great map-set and a good sequal to speed of DOOM, though causer i took a break from the set at map5, i remember the early maps alot less, on top of my bad memory that only comes back up when im reminded of it.

from what you say about breaking point, it seems like map 28 utilizes the BFG in a perfect way, where it's neither a required weapon nor just pure overkill

@@thelippyserver58 I don't know how you're able to say that, and it's not a veiled insult. I've played PI2 today, continuous with carryover gear, and it felt like Joshy tried his damndest to compensate unimpressive clunky geometry with excessive demon firepower with basically no thought for effective placement and coordination. Poison Ivy 2 feels clumsy and irritating for the sake of irritating the player.

@@DinnerForkTongue I'll grant that the pop up rev's and the archie manc staircase aren't the nicest things in the world, but I honestly felt like some of Darkwave's later maps are way less balanced. The final fight in map 26 with the million teleporting cyberdemons was just straight up bs. If I had to pick a moment in SoD that almost made me rage quit it would be that for sure.

Couple recently thought of Sawed Off recommendations -Forsaken Overlook by MTrop (another Secret Santa map imitating Lupinx-Kassman's style -Funeral Genocide by danne & darkreaver (has mix of Tangerine Nightmare and Valiant E4 aesthetic) -Kuchitsu by memfis (clean funny Doomcutey wad) -The Eye by mouly (2012 debut release) -Overboard by mouldy (his new wad)
