if you like wholesome game shows I recommend the first season of Fetch with Ruff Ruffman. its a kids game show with a cartoon dog host. it's basically just a group of kids who get to do fun activities and win little prizes. they even send them on activities for things the kid likes, like how they sent taylor to train animals at an aquarium because she wants to be a marine biologist.

Another fun fact about Takeshi's Castle is that the namesake Count Takeshi was played by Takeshi Kitano, later mostly known for his roles in/directing dark dramas such as Violent Cop or Hana-Bi. The British Takeshi's Castle is genuinely fantastic. They just stuck the commentator in a room with the tapes, a carton of cigarettes, and asked him to enjoy himself. Top bloke.
@SarahCharles92
@SarahCharles92 Жыл бұрын
As someone from the UK, I grew up watching "It's a Knockout" (basically British less mental version of Takeshi's Castle that started in the 60s but continued until 2001). Then, in 2002, Takeshi's Castle started airing in the UK. It became a massive hit, filling the "It's a Knockout" shaped hole that had appeared after it was not renewed. What is even better is that UK's version of Takeshi's Castle is narated by Craig Charles, a British TV personality who kind of just exudes funny vibes just being himself. He was made to commentate over it without any context and so sometimes he is as confused as the viewers, which makes for even funnier viewing, especially when he breaks out into laughter. Craig Charles also presented Robot Wars in the 00s (the UK version of what the US call Battle Bots, but with a different format as there were also neutral robots that would attack any robot that went into their section of the much larger arena), and his commentary on that is also really fun. If you do do a video on MXC/Takeshi's Castle, I strongly recommend watching that British 00s version as well so you can see the differences.

Man, everyone I knew watched MXC growing up. I think it's actually kind of an interesting idea to buy up the catalogue of some old foreign show and create something completely different out of it between editing and ridiculous dubbing. The comedy certainly doesn't age well but at the time it may well have been the least offensive thing on spike TV. Anywho, the things that come to mind when I think of the show are a lot of people named babaganoush and some episode where one team was the mafia and every time someone fell they played a gunshot sound effect and explained they'd be assassinated by the mob.

Not only was it dubbed on English but also on Spanish, we have takeshis castle dubbed and it is one of the best things I have watched in my childhood and to this day I still quote it. Of course the dubbing was by two comedians and it was completely made up. They made up characters and catch phrases. It was pure entertainment. I think the spanish verision was using more recent footage than from the 1980 cause the image was better and the levels way more advanced. The spanish version was all against all, some of the levels were in group but only a limited amount of people can win each round. My favorite was the sumo fights where one contestant had to pick a ball from a bag and depending on the color they had to fight a different person. And the names were fantastic the strongest one was called the madamme (la senora) and it was a huge sumo dude. Another was the coffee bean, a guy in a coffee bean costume (the coffee bean was dressed as a sumo) the weakest was harry potter cousin, it was a skinny dude with glasses. After hearing about the american version i can def say the spanish was better, the construction of the show made a lot of sense. The first level is the Chinese wall and its all contestants and they have a certain amount of time to go to the other side. The ones who made it could go to next level. Then the others were sometimes in different order, all platforming or some kind of physical test. it was hilarious. Also this was the main inspiration for fall guys. Good content Al turroooon !

I have fond memories of watching Takeshi's castle with my parents when I was younger and I gotta say, the German dub was actually funny. My dad hated reality tv but he'd somehow just go "man, these Japanese guys are crazy" and stand in front of the tv (not sitting down, he wasn't "actually watching" ofc lol) for the whole show

I think the reason why they changed the game show with two teams, because it has to do with Japanese history. Nobody's going to understand 40 people trying to take on a Shogun in America. But if they change it into two teams then it's like football and American Sports are easier to understand for an American audience.

Another story for Takeshi’s Castle, it was also aired in France in the early 2000, voiced over by two famous comedians of the day. I freaking loved this show, nothing made sense, it was too fast because of the re-editing, at the end they were fighting in laser shootings carts… I miss those things. I wish we could have those kind of things on KZbin.

Silent Library is such a huge part of my childhood. My friends and I used to play silent library together when we went to summer camp with our church. We played it from 6th grade all the way through senior year of high school and it was some of the best times. Sadly, my fraternity brothers thought the game was dumb when I introduced it to them in college.

As someone born in the 90s, Takeshi’s Castle was one of my all time favourites as a kid in the early 2000s. I’m from the UK, it was quite jarring to see those clips of the US version, it’s so different and even more bizarre. And I may be biased, but the UK version is definitely better, and voiced over by Craig Charles, it’s just perfect TV. Craig Charles also hosted Robot Wars, which is another ridiculous show that’s just an incredible watch. A year or two ago I revived these shows into my regular watch cycle for when I used to get stoned and just before bed 😂

Hello from (an American in) Japan; sometimes I turn on the TV here and there is an insane challenge segment like one of these on, but then the segment ends and the whole concept is just gone forever or until whatever producer is in charge of the situation decides to revive it. Sometimes they are incredibly simple (contestant sticks hand in a box and has to feel around and guess what the contents are -- audience can see inside the box); sometimes they are insanely elaborate (crashing through walls and going down slides on sound stages, etc.).

I never saw the show Silent Library, but last month my friends showed me an episode they were watching and one of the contestants was a guy who we did karate with when we were in elementary school. He was in his early 20s when he went on this show, so it was kinda hilarious to us because we knew him as “the world champion in our dojo” and in his free time he did this.

Strangely in Spain in the 90s we also did a redub of Takeshi's castle with a made up narrative. The story goes that when the Spanish tv network Telecinco bought the rights to a series of 80's anime they also got the rights and copies of Takeshi's castle. Not knowing what to do with them they hired 2 comedians and had them in a basement "studio" adlibbing over the recordings of Takeshi's castle with no idea of what they were watching. The show is called "Humor Amarillo" (Yellow humor) and is an icon for Spanish 90s kids.

There was also Ninja Warrior (which became American Ninja Warrior, of course). In Japan, the Warped Wall is called "Half-Pipe Attack! (ハーフパイプアタック)". This was a seriously cool topic to talk about, although I never seen Silent Library or the dubbed Takeshi's Castle! I'd love to see you cover more aspects of Japanese culture (I'd love to contribute)!

Takeshi's Castle actually had an excellent Dutch dub! Two presenters (one comedian, one straight man) would dub over the original Japanese footage to explain what was happening, but they didn't really know either, and hilarity ensued. Crucially, they did _not_ do bad lip-syncing of the contestants. And thanks for confirming I'm 25 again! My lower back needed that.
