I don't mind if after all the exposure she becomes some kinda niche underground artist as long as she keeps coming with those deeper darker moving songs. Although I'm a fan of her first album as a whole I prefer this song when compared to some more light hearted ones. She has a brilliant future ahead of her. Check those two songs: - Emily Haines - Crowd surf off a cliff - Archive - Nothing Else

Everything about this is perfect. The guitar, the setting, even the camera work. Most importantly, this song is hauntingly beautiful and Grace's performance is beyond sublime. The little applause at the end brings tears to my eyes, because I live in a Nigerian city at the other side of the world no matter how loud I cheer she's never going to hear me, so it feels like I'm cheering through them. Keep doing what you're doing Grace, you are a gift to the universe.

Who is this girl? A mini Adel, a Taylor Swift clone, Sia??? Nope! This is Grace Vanderwaal, a rising star that can hold her own against the lot of them. You have to understand, Grace is a rare talent. She wrote, composed and preformed this song and many others for that matter and it is an absolute masterpiece! Grace is a song writer first and foremost, and honestly that's her biggest talent! It's just a pure blessing that her voice complements her song writing so perfectly. She writes her own material (something most Pop artists don't do) Studios pay lots of money to buy Hit songs from writers (usually teams of writers) like Grace. The fact that she has the voice and talent to preform at this level is phenomenal, especially at the age of only 14!!! Even at the age of 12 she was writing songs people twice her age wish they could write. She is a total package and that's very, very rare. Good singers are a dime a dozen, why do you think we have so many singing competition shows? But sadly most of the winners of these shows fade away into obscurity because they have no good material to sing once their contract runs out, and buying Hit songs is very expensive. But not for Grace, because she creates her own content. Good song writers only come along once in a while and a song writer that can also sing is even harder to find. That's why she was dubbed the next Taylor Swift by Simon, not because she looks or sounds like her but because she is a singer and most importantly an excellent song writer. I honestly believe Grace has more depth then most pop singers in the industry these days. The music industry is getting shook buy this girls talent and we are going to be seeing a lot more of her in the future, and that's a very Beautiful thing ;) Watching her journey to the top has been so much fun =D Keep it up Grace were all rooting for you :)

Grace VanderWaal has raised the bar for what's a proper live performance, whether with a full band or just her and her ukulele. No lip syncing, no auto tune, no pornographic outfits, no group of style over substance dancers prancing around, no stage tricks. None of that. All she needs is her dazzling talent. This is why you don't see any big names covering her original work. Few have the courage. Even fewer have the depth to emote in a performance quite like Grace and make your believe it. And the incredible part it's it's only been nineteen months since she demolished the competition on AGT, and her voice has gone from that of a young girl and developed into that of maturing young woman and it's heaven sent. With a masterpiece of an album under her belt and being part of a tour this summer that will certainly help catapult her to new heights, it truly is just the beginning of what will prove to be THE career everyone is talking about in years to come no matter which direction she chooses to go. She's just that phenomenal.

black Erik Um... no. Kanye sounds brain damaged when he speaks. I never said Grace was any kind of a messiah. She isn't. As fior your racist wet dream that kanye is some kind of god, well he might be to people like yourself with the intellectual depth of a teaspoon. But to people who appreciate real creativity and performance artistry, your boy is just a barely functional loudmouth who married an equally talentless semen dumpster to save his career and keep him out of bankruptcy. If he didn't have that crew of minders protecting him from himself he'd be in prison for doing something stupid. But you go right ahead and keep on worshiping... brotha.

I commented a year or two ago that every time I listen to the I start crying, so I thought it's been a while so I listened to it again and again I started crying. I am not depressed this song makes my heart hurt and cry for everyone that is going through things like this. How can a girl of 13 write a song so that it makes my heart hurt, that is just crazy. I know that grace wants to move on and not think about the songs she wrote at 13 but Jesus I would love to hear her sing this today now that she is older. This is one of the greatest songs ever written if it can touch me so deeply. My wife has had a lot of mental issues through the years so I can feel how she must feel and get what she's going though and wow this song make me get it and so I cry for her and everyone else that is being chased by the darkness.

I cry, in whatever version she sings this song. So powerful. Unbelievable that a 13 year old could write something this close to heart without actually experiencing it. And that singing voice.... aiyaaa! Distinct, pure and raw. No bullshit technique. Just emotion that bridges the already emotional lyric. Like a punch in the gut! And you can do nothing but fall and lie crying on the floor in fetus position. Uhuk, uhuk! Lol. Sorry, a bit bombastic. But it's true. She's THAT good.

"The Story Of Lucy" is a Windex advertisement but uses Grace's "Beautiful Thing". Many people, myself included, think it is the most beautiful love song ever written. And the actual word" love" isn't even used. Both of these suggestions are studio recordings. It will give an idea of her diverse talent.

Sometime in the future when she is famous people are going to go back and look to see what she was doing from 2017 to 2023 the years she disappeared and be shocked, gasping for air over songs like Darkness and Beautiful Thing. Most people know the faster version of Beautiful Thing from AGT but very few have heard the slower EP version. They will be stunned that there was a 13 year old kid at Austin City Limits belting out songs like Better Life. They will wonder why NO ONE KNEW ABOUT HER.

I must add, just to put things into perspective...... I am a dyed in the wool, Led Zeppelin fanatic, lucky enough to have seen them live and I am also a Blues/Blues Rock vocalist, but Grace is in a category all of her own and dare I say it, comparable to Led Zeppelin and some of the other greats of my era in terms of pure and unbelievable talent. Grace you are the most pleasant enigma I have ever encountered. Keep it going girl, you are simply unbelievable. An old soul in a young girl's body.

This is going to sound stupid, but my favorite part in this live performance is at 3:14 when she sings the line "God I want to be different" at the tail-end of the bridge... the uptick at "dif" is something beautiful that I haven't heard her do with a note before, and she rang it out with a perfect "fereeeennnt" thereafter. Sorry with how particular I am with that, but that stuck out the most to me. I just keep playing that part over and over again. The whole song is just wow, but that line is too clean for its own good. I always loved how Grace sang at the beginning (since AGT), but she has improved in many ways just since the beginning of 2018 even.

Brandon Robinson - No, it's not stupid. I marvel at Grace's phrasing all the time, she has her own sense of timing and rhythm, along with the "musical chops" that really make her songs stand out. In "City Song" where she does the last "Heeearrr............Theee RUMBLE of Voicessssseeesss" always blows me away. when I heard it on JhB I was sure it had to be auto-tuned, even though I had heard it a week or two earlier, live at the ACL concert before the LP was even released. Grace is like nothing I've heard in music before.

Looks like we are all agree this song is a masterpiece, and how Grace sings is masterful. I'm recommended a few newbies to go an listen to the studio version from JTB on headphones - I think that is on another level too. It's not just the jaw drop/tear combo I had on the night it was released - I sat there listening to the whole album and this song comes at the end. Wow. Anyway, studio/heaphones: the nuances, the tiny corners of how she sings it are worth seeking out.

Lots of speculation about where she gets the inspiration for these types of songs, some even speculating grace herself may be experiencing dark thoughts. After grace disclosing that Better Life was inspired by her brother's struggles, I wonder if dkcm is similarly inspired...the line, blowing smoke in your ripped jeans, makes me think perhaps. She seems to have an incredible innate ability to empathize with others and to convey those feelings and emotions through her singing.
@Erfedwe
@Erfedwe 6 жыл бұрын
I don't recall where I saw the interview, but this song was inspired to an extent by the concept of being consumed by the music industry. As for the line about blowing smoke in your ripped jeans, that seems to have been a reference to Miley Cyrus, who she was a big fan of growing up.
@jeffh709
@jeffh709 6 жыл бұрын
Erfedwe. There is no interview where Grace describes her inspiration for this. Many have speculated and I have seen others give their thoughts on it but it wasn't grace. It is an enigma. She writes in metaphor and people interpret her lyrics the way they want. That is the brilliance of Grace VanderWaal. Personally I think she is being chased by evil temptations. Impure thoughts, the evils of getting caught up in the industry, ect. Think about it. She sings "I look to the right, see you blowing smoke in your ripped jeans. Don't tell me you fell in"- Some one next to her got caught by the evils of smoking cigarettes/drugs. The darkness got them but she is fighting. Grace is very spiritual and has strong Christian beliefs. She doesn't know what the song is about anymore= may mean she is confused on her path going forward. (She once said she wanted to be a Minister but now the music industry is calling) She wants to be different= may mean she doesn't want to fall into the same traps others have fallen for. Example- Miley Cyrus. I don't think that I can do it on my own= maybe she needs Gods help to avoid the pitfalls and Darkness (Evil). This is only my opinion of course. One among many out there. Something to chew on.

like2b2 most girls (which is what Grace is aiming at) pick their idol at 8 to 10 years old and are true blue to them for life, Ariana, Taylor and Selena have the majority of them all locked up. With the abortion rate skyrocketting they say there isn't as many kids coming up to that age bracket so I see Grace having a small fan base and will only get bigger if some jump ship and come over to Grace in the future. Ariana has the best voice of all of them but her songs are crap and to keep up to Grace in the future her team will have to employ the best writers money can buy. Taylor will be retiring soon, maybe an album every 2 years, and most people realize it was a nice try but Selena just doesn't have that great a voice, needs to stick with movies. There is another group of girls that wouldn't even have singing contracts if they didn't make Marilyn Monroe look common in comparison, Bebe, Sabrina and a few more. So this is why I see why Grace can't get on the radio or isn't international right now but it will come

I get a kick out of these yt list of 50 videos someone puts up of the songs of say 1972 and you know every song but this one you never heard of and you can't help scream out "what the hell was that" Well being a Canuck there are songs down in the State that were probably local hits somewhere that you never got to hear and for good reason, the song stunk. This guy who put up the videos probably knew the band personally and snuck it in for himself. Today for every 100 songs release per month there is a song that probably would be a hit in any era. To me I rationalize Grace as Chrissie Hynde born into a normal middle class home. I don't know Chrissie's story but something tells me the parents hated Disco and only played good Rock music in the home or her friends influenced her and there was no music played in her home to make her the typical teen of her time. Grace is Chrissie Hynde that was influenced by the typical music of her time but she has this Chrissie Hynde Rock brain. She has stated she prefers Pop over Rock and she has made fun of a great classic Rock song in the past. If she ever does do a version of "House of the Rising Sun" in the future it will only be because we as fans bug her to do it then in a year in a interview she'll tell us how much she hated it. Grace loves the glam of today's singers but when you hear her interviews she sounds like a rock performer. Eventually the Glam will wear off and she'll really listen and realize that yes that girl has a great voice but she doesn't have a clue on how to sing a song. Sometimes when I listen to that interview I feel like I'm watching John Lennon talking about how much he loves the Archie's. I feel strongly that because of who she appears to be in these interviews no one is going to be tugging on her nose ring in the future. When she gets older I believe she will go against their wishes and put out the stuff she wants to instead of what they think will sell, alas they may still make it onto the Pop radio stns. If her latest songs are the future trend " You Are So Beautiful" and " You'll Get Bored" then she's destined to the Jazz and R&B stns.
