***** Not necessarily accurate. you tailor your coaching to the individual in a lot of cases. generally speaking for say adults who wanna casually train? i totally feel you. but for kids for example? you can often start them on hard shit and they develop fast. some people take to bigger learning curves better than doin shit slower. no need to be so hostile, people teach a lot of different ways n people learn a lot of different ways. save the aggression for the ring my dude !

Thanks for sharing! I've only just started Muay Thai and I'm having trouble with the kicks (I'm used to doing Tae Kwon Do and they're very different). I'll be doing these suggested drills during my next runs.
@warriorcollective
@warriorcollective 9 жыл бұрын
Slidemoon Glad you have enjoyed it and found it useful. There are some considerable changes you need to make when moving from taekwondo to muay thai. Chambering kicks from the knee and staying side on as is done in taekwondo is a no no in muay thai given the fact you can catch, low kick etc. You just have to drill the change in stance and kicking from your hip until it becomes more natural. On the plus side, you will find the turning kicks a useful addition to the Nak Muay arsenal, they are actually part of the art, you just don't see them as much as you do in other disciplines and there are some slight variations/tweeks to consider.

For myself (a beginner with 2 somewhat dedicated years of training) I think I still need to properly develop the fluidity or just restriction free range on motion with all my kicks. I've seen even damn good fighters hinder their progress with their kicks (imo) if they're the type to avoid stretching enough for whatever reason. With my kicks the fluidity in my left roundhouse is way better than my right roundhouse just by fluke. It's comparatively restriction free and I just have a lot more dexterity and precision with that kick overall. With my right kick there is range of motion issues and technique breakdown (not getting enough height for head kicks etc and it becomes less powerful in those moments) especially when fatigue sets in. I'm working to improve this by stretching more often and warming up better, and overall I'm looking forward to developing my kicks. Thanks for the video.

Thanks for this. I notice his jab arm drops and then returns quickly. Is this fine, or should we be trying to keep the guard up all of the time when we kick? In one one of your other videos ("common mistakes") you show how dropping the guard is wrong and dangerous, but not sure if a very quick return of the guard is OK, and maybe contributes to a stronger kick.

That is part of the swinging arms movement to generate power and maintaining balance, which is rarely mentioned but commony practiced by Thai fighters. It is easily seen when they launch tens of consecutive kicks in pad work. For right kicks, first cross the right arm diagonally across the chest (to protect the chin as well) and lower the left arm simultaneously. Then swing the right arm forcefully rightward and/ or downward and raise the left arm & hand to protect the left side at the same time. (Some even swing the left arm back and forth in a circular movement!) It sounds a bit complicated but it works - my personal expericence, especially in launching switch kicks (left). Potential danger may exist if the opponent is a good boxer, so a jab or stretching out the left hand & arm may be used instead.

@warriorcollective

Thanks for the breakdown. I'm constantly trying to improve my communication when explaining in intricacies of a Muay Thai style kick, especially for those who have never done something as explosive as this. The initial side directional step is usually an easy instruction to follow. Do you have any language or analogy to describe the range of motion of the range of motion of the hip twist? Most people only twist a fraction of the necessary movement, thus striking with the wrong contact point of the leg as well as being off balance for a quick check of a counter kick or head movement to slip a punch attack. Thanks again, please keep sharing the goods 😊

woggy18 Some tips for getting enough rotation through the hip - Show your partner your ass as you kick - Point the heel of your standing leg towards your partner when you kick (This is actually an overcompensation but when they get lazy they will still do it right) - Visualise a line from your non kicking hip (left hip if you are right kicking) to your partners mirror image side. Now visualise trying to kick, taking your kicking leg HIP over that line. As for shape of trajectory, when you are first starting out it will be a crescent shape but as you delay the "whip of the hip" the trajectory slowly morphs in to the shape of a walking stick. Hope this helps.

Great video, one comment. I don't think moving toward the bag is a "mistake", but it is high level and you would be best served learning 10 and 2 first. I've seen videos of Thai legends talking about floating straight into the bag more or less, and it is difficult, but it can be very powerful and a little more deceptive.

What buggers me is the fast lead leg round kicks I see people throw. Like the one so fast you don't hear the impact until their foot's back on the mat. It makes sense that it's a switch kick considering the power, but I can't see the switch-up for the life of me. Is this just a really high skill level, or is there a good technique for getting that speed/power with the front leg?

Do you Straighten or Flick the lower Part of the Leg Wen you Kick ?
@warriorcollective
@warriorcollective 8 жыл бұрын
+Brian Smiths A good question and the answer comes about dependent on how stylistically you throw the kick in the first place. From my experience, Muay Thai Practitioners tend to kick from the hip and thus utilise more of a straighter leg at times whilst those from Karate, Taekwondo or some Kickboxing styles will often chamber from the knee when kicking, this resulting in the flick which you mentioned. There is not a right or wrong per se but there are plenty of arguments as to which mechanic allows the stronger kick. I hope this helps (even though it does not actually answer your question ha ha)!
@getmerolling
@getmerolling 5 жыл бұрын
Nice answer. I wonder how these two ways (straight leg versus chambered from a bent knee), affect the kick. In the sense of: which way suits which scenario. Probably each way has a different advantage & disadvantage, what to say about that?

Prev E Hey, thanks for watching and commenting. I think others have already answered your question really well! The only thing I would add to their already excellent information is that it also depends on where you are aiming the kick as to what part of the foot/shin you hit with. For example, it is easier to hit the inside of the leg with the instep (with less risk of injuring the foot) whilst it is too risky to want to do that to the outside of the leg, here it is the shin you want to strike with predominately (in case they check the kick).

some good tip's, but forgot to mention the importance of how you place your standing leg / foot. Your foot needs to be pointing outwards when you kick wether you choose to plant it or swivel, this gets your hips in the correct position. Also some groin and hip conditioning can tweak your power even more... Regards.

@PoweredByTheHaters
@PoweredByTheHaters 8 жыл бұрын
If you look closely, you can see he does move his arm back when he does kick, just not all the way down which is fine. Your arm moving down acts like a counterweight so you maintain balance while you're kicking, you don't have to go all the way down but do the motion, in an actual fight if you go all the way down, you leave yourself open and exposed, so moving it like how he does live will be the best way to do it once you get the fundamentals of it down

Good video, missed a couple points. I like to turn my leading foot roughly 15 degrees to the left when kicking as I feel it helps my momentum and accuracy as it helps me to gadge were the contact point is and drive through it. A lot of it is about maintaining balance and the correct distance. Atleast that's how I like to do it, doesn't necissarly mean it's correct.

hi there heres my technique for a turn kick, instead of doing the kick im first gonna tell you im doing the kick by stepping first, then im gonna tell you again and give you a free chance to punch my jaw off by dropping my hand, good technique man ! muai thai is a dam good martial art an that guy would smash almost 100% o any karate guy, but he could use a few years in karate to get that kick sharper and more powerful !

+mcpartridgeboy So what if you see the tell for the kick? If you don't get the hell out the way then it will smash your arms or your body. The step is taking him offline from counter punches. It's hard to land well with any good power when your opponent is stepping sideways away from you. And he brings up his other hand to protect his jaw so he isn't open at all. Go watch some top Nak Muay and see how easy it is to land a counter punch when they throw a heavy body kick.

***** Yep stepping with the guy (as you would do to catch) and jamming (coming inside the arc of the kick) are legit counters but there is always a counter/defence for everything. And you can then counter the counter by setting a trap and so on.

+Alessandro Macedo Hey, I get asked this a lot. Unfortunately there is no shortcut to the conditioning of shins. It is essentially just a case of repetition. Use the shin to hit the thai pads, heavy bags and spar. They will bruise and hurt but they will heal. Every time this process occurs they will gradually become more conditioned for impact i.e. losing most of the pain receptors in this area through the damaging of nerves and increasing the density of the bone via the series of micro-fractures caused by the repeated trauma of striking hard surfaces. Stay away from anything that breaks the skin or over damages as this will not only halt your training for long periods of time, it can also lead to deformity of the bone. I hope this helps!

In theory that is always going to be what the aim is, in practise it sometimes does not happen for the best of us! Rich made it to being a world champion and a great one at that so I guess no one is perfect ha ha! I hope you enjoyed the tutorial regardless, thanks for taking the time to watch and comment!!

If you want resistance in your training then the next best thing will be a pad holder. In some respects having a partner is better than a bag but the downside is you then have to rely on them being there.

The_WoLF55 Hi, thanks for commenting and getting in touch. In answer to your question, I would recommend that you find a suitable gym and instructor locally to you in order to learn Muay Thai. The videos on this channel are not meant to replace a gym and instructor, they are here to supplement your existing training. I hope you find somewhere great! Let me know how you get on!

Stepping aside forward before a kick can help the practitioner pivot the ball of the support leg and rotate the hip better, and thus launch a perfect / standard shin kick with utmost power. It is a more effective way for learners especially in bagwork. But this way may have a telltale effect in bouts. Stepping straight is more practical in fights especially when one has to kick frequently and swiftly. A Nak Muay kicks as much as he walks and masters the knack of thai kick since childhood, so he simply takes a small step forward to gain momentum for the kick all the time and tells others to do so.

Dennis nguyen training with champs don't make you a champ... this guy is a champion. This is his perspective. Thai has it's style ... Holland fighters have their own style and US and Euro have their own style. Just enjoy and take what you can from this video. Doesn't mean it's incorrect..like you're are implying.

I have 38 fights 26 wins 4 draws 6 lost I didn't say this as a bad comment.the power of a kick come from the rotation of the foot,hip and body.if u step aside u are wasting at least 20/30% of ur power.for beginners I agree but not advance fighters.and before u ask I have 25 years of training so I speak by experience after trying many different ways .tks for all ur videos keep up the good work

+Jason McCarthy Totally agree. Personally I always aim for my hips to be 90 degrees vertical, because this way most of my the energy will be transmitted through my via my hips in the target. However there are many different ways of kicking. One method is faster, but less powerfull. While another method is much slower, but much more destructive. I'm getting so much off topic. Anyway there is alot of science behind throwing a Muay Thai kick, which is interesting to me
@JasonP118
@JasonP118 9 жыл бұрын
I agree with you but I watched a guy once do his Thai kicks a little different which I thought was interesting he turned the right leg almost a full 90 degrees without moving on the ball the full 180 as a Karate round house ends up with the full twist just the ninety and closed the gate threw the bag. You kicking is way better than mine I am just asking if you have tried this approach and what difference you found in the power and speed?
@bryanbessem
@bryanbessem 9 жыл бұрын
Jason McCarthy Do you have a link? To be honest I can't really visualize what you're trying to say. What I do know is that the more you turn your hips and ball of your foot, the longer it takes to land your kick. The main point for a good kick, as far as I know is transferring as much energy possible in your leg by turning your hips and body in. Also your leg should always follow your body.
