The clip of Beatrice and Benedick sparring is well known, but this extended scene shows that Beatrice is actually defending Hero from Benedick's quip about her father being unsure of her parentage. She is deflecting the tension onto herself and diffusing the situation by de-fanging his wit. From the very beginning of the play, the topic of Hero's honor is a plaything to be questioned by the boys.

​​@@focusingbeautyThat's how Shakespeare wrote him. He was just a villain. Much Ado about Nothing is titled in that manner in a very self aware manner. It is a play about a series of events and then it ends. It's one of his most simple yet charming works.
