Crab pot thieving is a big problem in the NT also. i only leave my pots out for 45 mins before checking them. You have to keep working the pots. It's hard to fish and Crab at the same time and I never leave my pots over night. We always catch some good Mud Crabs that way. PS I always use the rectangle pots and you can cable tie them closed. A cut cable tie will tell you for sure if someone has been thieving your crabs,

I've been crabbing in NSW for a while now. Been pretty successful and avoided A lot of crab pot thieves. 1. Try to crab in areas where boats cannot enter whereas kayaks and SUPs can. Best thing you can do. 2. Cable tie your pots 3. I use chicken wire metal cages to keep bait inside to avoid pickers ( if it's a crab the cage will be crushed). 4. Hide your floats well. 5. I never leave my my pots above the low tide mark, you're missing out on half the tides. 6. Stay close to the pots. I usually check every hour, rotate and move. Keep baits fresh, flattie heads are amazing bait. Good luck!

Unfortunately its a very sad and common thing with people checking other peoples pots, cutting floats and/or damaging the pots in general. We have learnt unless you are staying near your pots and checking them every couple hours to zip-tie pots closed and we use specific zip-ties so if someone changes them we know. Its a pain thing to zip-tie them closed but it does work because people cant be bothered to deal with it most of the time. Love the videos mate keep up the great work.

I mean, you set time aside to paddle out with pots and set them then paddle back, then bloody paddle out again and have to paddle all the way back with empty pots ,1 damaged and without reward for the massive effort. And the bugger is that they just cruise on in with a motor and are laughing cooking up some fat muddies. Probably took the females too! I reckon you could setup a sting with all the boys and then you'd be having the laughs. In a way they stole food and enjoyment from your family. Anyhow, great attitude and you still got a feast in. You're a pleasure to watch, Cheers.

Fish crab pots here a lot through the year, most times they don’t get pinched, but it happens - a lot of times commercial crabbers in the area they’ll hit yours as a bonus - if its like a holiday time and the tourists are out they may hit your pots for fun. Commercial guy actually threw my pots out the water into the marsh once cause I had made my pots where you need snips to get the crabs out. Cool change up inshore crabbing/fishing and all, a lot of what we do here. Cheers man, cool vid -

Hey Rod, just wanted to say that its illegal to have the pot out of the water at low tide with aquatic life in it in QLD. It's an little known law. I saw Fisheries removing pots once and asked why, they told me about the rule, which I was unaware of myself (I don't crab).

Bull sharks will bite their way into a crab pot when you leave them out overnight. We used to wrap our mules bait inside a slit aluminium beer can, cable tied together, and the bull sharks would even tear the beer can to bits to get at the bait. They would have no problem biting that hole in your crap pot netting.

Start putting trail cameras hidden well in the mangroves aimed at your pots to catch those jerks. Also, Something I do in Florida is zip tie the access closed so you know if someone has tampered with it cuz they’ve cut the zip tie to get in. Maybe scout areas on google earth that is impossible for boats to get into. Like little feeder creeks through the mangroves you can tuck your traps back into. Or areas that are too shallow for boats to pass that you can get into with a kayak or paddle board and then maybe it gets deeper in certain spots where you can submerge traps.

Yeah, I thought the same. The thieves or an informer live in those houses overlooking the creek. Maybe they have cams on the area 24/7. So if you put a trail cam near your pots (not easy to do in a swamy mangrove), you lose your crabs, get your crab pot knifed up AND lose your trail cam. !!
