Maybe if you guys get a chance, why not do a mud test on a Krag Jørgensen carbine and a mud test on a Springfield trapdoor rifle, to see what it would have been like for the soldiers that carried these two types of rifles during the Spanish-American war We already know about the Winchester 1895 (but not many soldiers were armed with them) so I think it would be cool to see how both of these weapons would handle in the mud.

Isn't a Remington model 10 basically a more complex Ithaca 37? I'm mixed on if the 97 would do well, two open ports with a huge opening in the back plus an exposed firing pin striker like on a revolver sounds like bad news. The only saving grace I could think of is the bolt flinging mud away from the action, just to bring it in when it goes forward. Now I'm tempted to try this with my Norinco 97 but that thing is a bitch to take apart and clean.

Gentlemen, I was taught from an early age that my rifle, my horse and my dog were tools to help me survive and get back home. With that in mind, I would wrap the action and protect it when not in use, never beat the dog or horse and care supplies for them too. All the channels that “torture test” weapons all come from a world where an armorer would fix or replace it. Apologies, but I come from an old school of respecting the tools you need and don’t waste ammo.

Very gratifying, very thought provoking. There is an English website (which I’ll look up the address ) that narrates the report from the British Army test of the uh “Daddy” of the large action toggle system: the British Army trials rifle of 1868…their sand test involved BLOWING a stream of fine sand into the action for a minute…now that particular rifle did jam up so bad that the action lever was bent over from the force applied to free the action….Winchester might have benefitted from that 1868 test…however in the range test conducted before that, the rifle put a 5 round string not a 12” bull at 500 yards AND a 5 round string into a 3 foot bull at 800 yards (.455 cartridge round)…the Brits liked the Winchester best in the test and saw a future for it…..but ultimately went with the Martini Henry……Seems like the generals that had the most faith in the Winchester were the defenders of the Great Plains…. Maybe somebody noted this previously in this string… LOVE my 1876!!!

I believe Karl has said a lever action carbine in .357 mag would be a great home defense type gun in places where semi auto is restricted before, q&a I think, so I imagine they would consider a lever gun much more viable today than a bolt action, probably solidly obsolescent.

I can see why the top brass in Armies didn't want the soldiers to have such a high rate of fire. Most soldiers didn't have the training to have much in the way of fire discipline which would mean ammunition would be used up much quicker than a single loader. You have to get the ammunition from where it is able to be made to the "front lines" and that is a much longer supply line than food is. You can't just shoot an animal to get more bullets like you can with food when out in the field. Logistics is very important and not often thought about.
