What you have to love about The Stones is that it started with their pure love of music, and especially the blues. When they got to America they couldn't believe that all the great Bluesmen were almost completely disregarded, and to give them their dues, they helped to re-establish their reputation in the eyes of the public there.

I do agree. There's "white boy blues" and its mostly awful but these guys were the first in class generation of European white musicians who took their reference directly from the masters (who were still alive). A "real" bluesman like Gallagher or Green or Clapton .. they took it and moved it on for a new generation and they did make it fresh again. You just don't really see that in modern revisions. Its either a homage or a cover of something the white boys did. Its rarely if ever from European Caucasians either. You almost feel like black folks just moved on from it for obvious reasons and created new things (Hip Hop, Funk, Soul etc etc etc etc) but whenever I revisit it personally I can't help but lament what has been forgotten.

I got dressed to go to the checkerboard lounge that night, no knowing the Stones would show up. I got to tired and went to bed. This is a gig I am very sorry to have missed. Here is what I just found online. "The club opened in 1972, with Buddy Guy as its first act, and on November 22, 1981, it hosted its most famous night when Muddy Waters and his band were joined by Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Ronnie Wood, and Ian Stewart from the Rolling Stones, along with Buddy Guy, Blues harmonica legend Junior Wells, and guitarist Lefty Dizz for a night of pure blues."

And the Rolling Stones got to perform with their idol. The rolling stones got their wish fulfilled. When they started listening to Myddy via rare recordings in England before they themselves became world famous. Rolling stones are mega influenced by Myddy. Just listen to their early music. Incredible talent by The Roling Stones and especially Muddy Waters. Look at that smile. A kid in a candystore with unlimmited amount of pennies. 🙂

AWESOME! I am still shaking off my temble skin after watching this incredible video. Indeed, God must have put a hand on this place that night, and made it one of the best "soul and blues" performances of all times.

Muddy never leaves any doubt that this is his turf, and these young fellows are just guests. Mick and Keith must have been pinching themselves. This is the man whose records they used to trade when they were penniless teenagers in London. They named their band after one of Muddy's songs. What a night!

The Stones had to be over the moon doing this. Muddy Waters was their idol and biggest inspiration, and Mick and Keith struck up their friendship while talking about Muddy Waters records on the subway.

I saw Muddy open for Eric Clapton at the Buffalo Memorial Auditorium. I was around 14 years old. Eric was just coming off rehab for Heroin, and Muddy blew him away. Muddy shaped my love for the Blues and Music for the next 40 year, and I hope another 20. Luv how Mick plays shy to go on stage at the beginning but warms up pretty quickly.. Legends!!!

I saw Muddy Waters in a small club in Charlottesville, VA a year or 2 before this. His voice was fabulous and his stage presence unmatched. When he sang Mannish Boy, I think he could’ve beckoned to any woman in that place and she would’ve jumped to be by his side. He truly was bigger than life.

The chance for both Muddy Waters and The Rolling Stones to set aside fame for a little while and rock it, to jam together for the pure love of music, sharing it, talents from far apart and yet sharing that same kind of soul and love of music for a little while. Awesome. They are loving it. That's how it ought to be. Hot dang.
