Wonderful feeling the tingle you felt knowing Shakespeare may have had smoke from that pipe waif in and around a performance. It is the history and not the money. Notification bell set, as always, for part 2.

That wonderful wheel is from a wagon that carried extreme weight. I say that because of the number of spokes it has. It also appears to be quite wide. Being designed wide would have helped distribute the weight allowing it to be used on softer terrains. Usually wheels that were used to carry lighter loads had thinner ground contact and less spokes. I wish there were some way to rescue it and some of the tree drainage pipes. So much history being lost. Thank goodness, folks like you are documenting it.

I used to dive in this small harbour here on Cape Breton Island, Canada. In the winter the big sea ice would come into the harbour and rip up the bed. In those crevasses I have found several pipes and shards of pottery even two pewter spoons a pewter plate and a goblet. I saved everything. Now I'm eager to go back and open up those boxes to try and identify some of it. Love your videos.

USA here Mr. Bill, I know you made this video a few years ago but still very interesting to watch. I would like to venture a guess on the wheel, I believe it to be a wheel off a large chariot, those things sticking out the side look like they are dangerous.

I'm guessing the wheel was used as a type of gear that humans would push around to either lift cargo off the ships onto the dock above, or for winding ropes up.
@triac777
@triac777 7 жыл бұрын
The wheel in the mud appears to have been an anchorage point. A wheel was probably used to distribute the load over a larger, more muddy and softer bottom. It is cleated down by several piles driven in at angles. An anchor like this would probably be used by a small craft pulling at a low angle. A large ship pulling straight up would have plucked it rite off the bottom. OR, maybe it was a place where prisoners were chained at low tide and left to drown in the rising tide. Gruesome thought.

I think it must be an anchor made out of a heavy wagon wheel. Very interesting artifact.

I think the wheel is an old iron cart wheel and was just an anchor point for something, the staves wedged in at angles in it to stop it being pulled loose or turning in the mud. I have no idea whey someone would do that when it seems to be right next to a post. I may have nip up to London and look at that and the posts meself

The stuff that could be in that river. Especially coinage. I do think that wheel is possibly an old old train wheel. If it is it would surely be heavy enough for an anchor.
@ChillBill1

its a slim possibility its a train wheel from the very early days, but more likely a heavy wagon wheel. Past the low tide line it will be stuffed with coins!

I liked the video. I think you're right in that wheel is pegged down to act as an anchor. I've not see one with pegs before. Also, if you believe in global warming and don't want the Thames foreshore to disappear with rising tides shouldn't you be in favour of cycle lanes and reducing car traffic? ;)

Yes, to a point. (Although I suspect when it becomes underpowered for it's purpose a bigger one will be built). Either way, as far as I know, it's only supposed to hold back unusually high tides. Rising sea levels will still effect low tides I presume.
@ChillBill1
@ChillBill1 7 жыл бұрын
Only 7000 years ago the sea was 350ft lower and the UK was attached to France and all the way to Germany. Change happens...
@Treasuretom
@Treasuretom 7 жыл бұрын
Just to be pedantic, 7000 years ago you're only looking at about 10-15ft difference in sea levels. You have to go back about 14000 years to hit the 350ft mark, but I see the point, and if you go back 16000 years sea levels were about 400ft lower, which is incredible. I concur that change does happen but Global warming is a proven, preventable, and man-made change and it's a little sad that we don't do more as a species to prevent it. I'm not sure why I'm discussing climate change on your mudlarking video and I'm sorry if it's not very relevant but I often think about how man made rising sea levels will affect our hobby, let alone planet!
@ChillBill1

With the older angled pipe bowls one could smoke the pipe in the rain with the bowl pointing downward and the tobacco would not fall out.

I've seen pictures of that but frankly I'd expect the tobacco to fall out as the core shrunk on burning. Maybe that's why they went out of fashion.

ha ha.... the bike lanes....oh yes, great economics our leaders have. We have a major business street where the city banned all parking on both sides of the street to turn the parking space into bike streets....where No bikes Ever travel. We are a city of 70,000 and I guarantee you there aren't 30 people who travel by bike. The businesses are outraged as everyone has to park in the rear in areas that are dark, unkept and dangerous....then, walk around the building to the front....bright aye! Many of the businesses are closing....no wonder.
