The most profound statement in this video is “I am complete in an empty room .” Minimalism has taught me to view possessions as tools for my everyday life and as soon as I shifted my thinking, I found a great sense of peace and happiness. I am now liberated from my belongings.

These men right here are the reason why I started becoming a minimalist. Ever since my favorite cat died last december 25 I lost all my will of living and finally understood that stuff cannot make up your happiness; experiences can do it instead. I started listening to episode 1 of their podcast asni got rid of EVERYTHING that didn't add value to my life, starting from my bedroom. They didn’t call it this back when I was growing up, but apparently my mom was a minimalist. I remember us constantly going through our stuff and getting rid of what we no longer used. She also didn’t decorate for holidays. By the time I was grown, I didn’t have one single thing left from my childhood. I guess I’m supposed to be good with that, but it always made me a little sad. I would have liked to read some of those books to my kids.
@kateb6893 Жыл бұрын
I'm so sorry for that. I would have been that mom to an extent if I hadn't had my MEL'S example to follow. She kept two bins of her 4 sons most loved toys from their childhood and saved them for her grandchildren. All of the 80's and 90's action figures, toy cars, micromachines, Legos, etc. have been well-loved over the years and much of it is still in fantastic condition. It will probably be passed down to great-grandchildren. I have a box of my daughter's old toys, as well as a few of her baby garments that I couldn't depart with, and a box of my sons' toys. We call them the "grandma boxes".

As an artist, I have to say I have an issue with bare walls in a home. I need art around me. I need to see it the art in each room I go into. Something I love, something that has meaning to me. I only have other people's work on my walls (except for one portrait of my mother) and, artwork given to me by the children in my life. That's more important to me than anything I could purchase. @@AlexCequea I think you're missing the point. Minimalism doesn't discriminate against income, location or even square footage, although when practicing it you'll probably soon realize what too much space is. It's about the way you mindfully fill the space you can afford with the things that will serve a purpose in Your Life(tm). I don't believe you have to be able to cram your whole life into a backpack or tiny home to be 'good' minimalist, but if you can afford to do so, it serves you and brings you joy and freedom, have at it! It's not a competition. You might want to check in why you feel this way.

Still I am hanging on to too many books, too many papers related to my work, and have SO many decades of photos. I love the book tower and the very curated items this video shows. Need to find the less costly options for such artistic furniture. I have inherited some of my dad's beautiful Ingenous and African stone and wood carvings that he bought or received as gifts. While I have little in the way of furniture, it is harder than it looks to curate when there are sentimental or familial attachments.

"I am complete in an empty room" - this is very close to the motto I've been living by for the last few years: "Simple is best. Have as much open space as possible. Keep only what's necessary, serves a purpose, and is beautiful." I will be showing this video to my mom - every time my parents visit, my mom always makes a point of complaining about how spartan my apartment is, just because I don't have walls covered in decorations or tons of furniture everywhere like she does (being at my parents' house stresses me out big time because there's so much stuff everywhere and zero open space) - I have a small wall clock and a cross hanging up, and that's it for actual wall decorations. In reality, though, I have decorations everywhere in my room: almost all the furniture (dropleaf table, desk, night stand, and a bookcase that we searched high and low for months to find the perfect one), all the shelves, the valances, the lamps, the little black metal gas fireplace (was there when I moved in), the windows (they're huge and take up a massive amount of wall space, so there isn't even that much open wall space to begin with), even the blinds, door frames, window frames, baseboards, backsplash, and certain sections of the wall are decorative, so I actually have a very decorated room without any risk of ending up with decoration clutter - having lots of things whose only purpose is to serve as decorations isn't something that's important to me, but I do like subtly decorative practical items; the only things I keep on display are things that mean a lot to me - a beautiful stuffed horse my best friend made me, my college diploma, and only a few other things mean enough to me to actually be kept out as decorations. I tried adding another decoration once (I didn't even go so far as to hang it on the wall - I just set it on a shelf and leaned it against the wall), but I couldn't stand having anything else on the wall and within a week of putting it up I had packed it away to donate, and since then have never found myself wishing I had anything more up other than I already do.

One of the few vids that actually show minimalist practicality. Challenging to be minimalist with kids, but great way to teach kids how not to be attached to material things. All, or at least most, furniture seems to be expensive and certainly design pieces. The great thing about this is that it helps you not to get attached to them knowing that in the event of having to let go of them if need be, they can all be replaced exactly the same. One of the great things about minimalism is that you give yourself the chance of surrounding yourself with good beatiful quality pieces. Fewer better thing. It does improve your quality of life and your mental state.

I own slightly more things than the average minimalist, but pops of color are what make my minimalism unique. I also love following the 1 in 1 out rule (and sometimes more "out").

Thanks for inspiring many people to live a meaningful life with less. Minimalism changed me and I hope more people will get to embrace it.

Oh this a wonderful.. Love what your teaching your daughter. I find I am stressed a lot because I am constantly thinking about the stuff that is around me and where can I put it. I have so much stuff I don't need! Don't think I could be as minimalist as your and your family are but I could surely get rid of a pile of stuff. May be this spring and summer I will work on this. Great weather brings on the getting rid and cleaning bug. Thanks for sharing your home with us!

What resonated with me as a newbie starting out decluttering working towards simplifying my life was in regards to artwork and aesthetics, the bones are the beauty of the space. I am in the process of redesigning my home office and was clueless as to where to start with aesthetics. Video provided me with great insight. Thank you allowing us to come into your hand to experience what minimalism looks like through your perspective.

I used to be an extreme minimalist and a vegetarian when I was a child, just like most of my friends. We grew up in the Soviet Union. The apartment in the video is a luxury. Try four people in one room using boxes as furniture.

I look at this and I don’t think minimalist. To me this is what I want my place to be. It looks very comforting there. Great place. I look at my house and there is too much stuff. Too cluttered full of things I never use. People think of minimalism as tiny houses with people living like modern hippies. But it’s not like that at all. It’s just about focusing on what brings value to your life rather than having lots of crappy stuff. I would rather have fewer high quality things, than lots of crappy things.

This is my goal, I'm getting there! I love this way of living. Less stress, less pressure, saving more, no following mainstream bullcrap. It's what we like, what we want. Nothing for the reaction of others.
