Songwriting legend Leon Russell wrote this song and when asked who he most wanted to record his songs, he always said the Carpenters because of Karen's astonishing voice. Her brother Richard's arrangements are unmatched as well which made Karen's voice shine like a diamond, it took that brother-sister combo to truly make the magic. Karen could record it in one take too, just a deep natural talent, but also you should not miss, she was a world class drummer, so much so that she thought herself a drummer, who could sing. You found two of the greatest voices in one day, Karen Carpenter and Patsy Cline.

"I love you in a place where there's no space or time, I love you for my life, you are a friend of mine." Great lyrics by Leon Russell. Two other Carpenters songs by Leon Russell, "This Masquerade" and "Superstar" I think you'll like. Carpenters left us some wonderful and timeless music. Really enjoyed your reaction. Karens ANGELIC voice penetrates deep. She was also a superb drummer! And yes, her story is a sad one. Was difficult watching a beautiful, healthy young woman, with such a heavenly voice deteriorate. Wish she had realized how beautiful and loved she was. RIP KAREN.

Karen was one of a kind. There will never be another like her. She had such a pure calming voice. And she was a terrific drummer. That was her passion even more than singing. Sadly we lost her so young. Thankfully we have her legacy left in her music. The Carpenters had so many great songs such as "Rainy Days & Mondays", "Close To You", "For All We Know", "Superstar", "Goodbye To Love", "Top Of The World", "Sing", "Yesterday Once More", "I Won't Last A Day Without You", "Please Mr. Postman", "Only Yesterday", "There's A Kind Of Hush (All Over the World)" & so many more.

Just say Karen Carpenter. The Voice. You will fall in love with her. Something to behold. Admired by many including Leon Russell, Donna Summer, John Lennon, Pat Metheny, Rita Coolidge, Olivia Newton-John, Petula Clark, Paul McCartney, John Fogerty, Bob Seger, Tom Petty. Karen was a major influence on female singers who were more aggressive: Chrissie Hynde, Madonna, Sheryl Crow,kd Lang - etc etc etc. Her drumming was admired by Hal Blaine and Buddy Rich who said she was his favorite drummer. The music business rates Karen a great drummer. Rock drummer of the year 1975. Just astounding. They were a band that became the *1 selling AMERICAN group in the 70's.Their record sales are between 150 -200 million and growing. Enjoy the fabulous Carpenter rabbit hole. Her Brother Richard is a genius in the arranging of all their songs. My request is Karen singing with Ella Fitzgerald here on KZbin. Ella and Karen admired each other.

Karen's voice is like a warm hug. We were so shocked when she died of Anorexia at the age of 32. Her death really brought the Anorexia eating disorder to public awareness. Karen described herself as a "drummer who sings". She was a fantastic drummer and you can find videos of her drumming here on KZbin. She and her brother Richard harmonized so beautifully together. Watching her live is a treat. That voice never failed her and sounded just as great live.

The Carpenters were the best. I can remember other female artists trying to sound like her, and I don't think anyone can ever sound truly like her. The songs were amazing. I felt so sorry for her, she was body shamed so badly even back then that she basically starved herself. They said that she was starting on the road of recovery, she gained some weight back, but her heart had been to damaged from the disease Anorexia Nervousa, and had a heart attack. RIP Karen Carpenter, you were amazing!!

One of the greatest female vocalists who ever lived. And I don’t think you’d be able to find very many musicians that would disagree with that statement. I can't tell you how much I enjoyed that reaction. You REALLY listened. You know the layering you mentioned? Karen's brother, Richard, arranged all their stuff, and the Carpenters became known for the beautiful multi-tracking overdubbing...rerecording only him and Karen as the layers. You mentioned the sax solo. I memorized this brilliant long solo by Bob Messenger (the Carpenters' woodwind guy) because I transcribed it for a jazz improv class in college. I've heard a lot of whaling and screaming, held high notes in other sax solos, but Messenger delivered essentially a composition within a composition. The solo had direction. It wasn't just flipping up and down on a couple notes and screaming high. Really enjoyed how you, again, really listened. Did you notice how Karen hit those beautiful low notes, how she was right on-pitch, and how she had a very controlled vibrato, which she could sustain? You probably did because you noticed so much of the song's other aspects. Really nice reaction. Please do more. Other commenters noted a lot of their songs, but I just wanted to suggest some very emotive pieces: Solitaire, Desperado, and This Masquerade. Again, really nice reaction...subscribing tonight. :) Oh, almost forgot...a brand new unauthorized (meaning not influenced by the family) movie has just come out and is making the rounds at film festivals. I don't know when normal folks will get access, but it's called "Karen Carpenter: Starving for Perfection." The home page is karencarpenterdoc.com/

Karen sings “listen to the melody, ‘cause my love is in there hiding.” After “melody”, the song splits into multi-part harmony, literally hiding her love in the melody. This is the genius of the arranger, her brother Richard. Dunno if you can tell, but this is my favorite song from my favorite vocalist. Also check out “I Know I Need To Be In Love”. My Dad introduced me to The Carpenters and Sinatra when I was about 6 or 7. That was about 1968-69ish. I later turned to rock, loud guitars and all that, but I never lost my appreciation for what real talent was. I’ve been in a few garage bands, and my friends would always think I was pulling their leg when I’d mention The Carpenters, but l made believers out of a few of them. Nobody sings like Karen, and Richard’s arrangements are still unequaled. Frank is Frank. That level of talent just doesn’t happen anymore. And they make it sound so effortless. Dad indulged me listening to rock, holding his nose most of the time, but occasionally he’d ask “what orchestra is this?” when the cream rose to the top. He really liked Bohemian Rhapsody. Nothing else sounded like that back in the day. Allman Bros. also impressed him. Miss him-great Dad.

Nice reaction Mug. Curiously I find myself checking various channels' enjoying the reactions to the perfection that so many of us of a certain age were around to enjoy when they were making their music.Little did I know, just shy of her 30th birthday, my now angel daughter succumbed to the same thing due to similar things that Karen experienced. Ironically, early on, prior to the onset of her sickness, I had introduced her to the Carpenters, and she was well aware of Karen's plight. Some nights it rips my gutts OUT. Some nights it soothes me. Sometimes it's a combination... but it's worth it to my ears. I miss Her SO much everyday. As many do Karen Carpenter. Folks, keep in mind what may be the most innocuous comment, could contribute and complicate someone else's challenge, Just show some love and kindness to everyone, it doesn't take any more or less effort than the opposite. Thank You for the review.

This was all pure talent - no auto-tune or technology machinations. She was gifted with the most gorgeous voice from God. Sadly, we only had her for 32 years after her sudden death due to her heart stopping as a complication of Anorexia Nervosa. When she died, she was only about 70 lbs. Richard, her brother, was an astonishingly gifted instrumentalist and arranged all of their songs. She was, first and foremost, a DRUMMER! It was her first love and she only came out front due to fan insistence. Mug - take time to listen to the song without interruption - the lyrics and her voice transports the listener as only she can. What a loss to the world, but the Angels gained a phenomenal addition! I can't wait to hear her one day in heaven. You can't go wrong reacting to ANY Carpenters song! Give a listen to SUPERSTAR.
