Great reaction. They were brother and sister. Paul McCartney and Elton John considered her one of the greatest voices of all time. Madonna claimed to have been influenced by the singer’s harmonic sensibility. Gwen Stefani has said she still gets goose bumps when she hears Karen sing. Carpenters were the #1 selling american group in the 70's. They were so great they had 15 #1 hits on the adult contemporary charts in 14 years. 20 consecutive releases hit top 20. That is unheard of. Considered 1 or 2 in best duo's of all time. Karen Carpenter is a legend bar none. Rated best female drummer of all time. Passed away at 32 of anorexia nervosa, R.I.P. drummergirl. PTL.

You are in for a treat. Review as many Carpenters songs as possible, you'll never be disappointed. Sometimes you'll be gob-smacked at their range of genres - pop, rock, power ballad (which they invented), classical (church/religious), dance, country, science fiction (yes, science fiction). Pioneers of multi-tracking - there's only Karen and her brother (and musical genius) Richard singing.

Hearing Karen's voice on the chorus of this song gives me chills every time. A great song, sung by a great singer. I'm glad you reacted to the studio version b/c the live version most people react to does have the wonderful sax solo. I do want to note though that Karen's voice live is as good as what you hear on the records. No auto tune needed.

My high school choir teacher went to CSU Long Beach with Richard and Karen Carpenter and was a friend of theirs. Karen had a most beautiful and unusual voice, but she hated being the center of attention, it made her nervous and she felt more comfortable behind the drums. Richard was the genius of the pair as it was his arrangements and harmonies that were so unique. Together they were perfection.

The Carpenters (officially just "Carpenters") was a brother-sister pop duo consisting of Richard and Karen Carpenter. Karen sang lead on the overwhelming majority of their songs, with both siblings overdubbing the background vocals. (In other words, all vocals here are Richard and Karen - no other background singers.) "A Song for You" was the title track from their fourth studio album, which was released in June 1972. The triple-platinum-selling LP included six songs that charted in the Billboard Hot 100 between late 1971 and 1974: "Bless the Beasts and Children" (B-side to their single from 1971 "Superstar"), "Hurting Each Other," "It's Going to Take Some Time," "Goodbye to Love," "Top of the World," and "I Won't Last a Day Without You." Apart from the numerous hits collections that have been released over the years, this LP provides an excellent introduction to the Carpenters' artistry during their peak years. During their active recording career, from their signing with A&M Records in 1969 until Karen's untimely death in 1983 (from the effects of her prolonged battle with anorexia), the Carpenters landed 20 singles in the Top 40, with 12 of them reaching the Top 10 (including three #1 and five #2 hits). Fifteen of their single releases, meanwhile, reached #1 on the Adult Contemporary chart - which was a record number for many years after Karen's death until finally broken by Elton John. Other recommendations: "(They Long to Be) Close to You" (1970), their breakthrough hit, "We've Only Just Begun" (1970), "For All We Know" (1970 - chart peak, 1971), "Rainy Days and Mondays" (1971), "Superstar" (1971), "Yesterday Once More" (1973), and "Only Yesterday" (1975). For album cuts (non-singles): "Let Me Be the One" (1971), "And When He Smiles" (from their 1971 performance at the BBC), "Road Ode" (1972), "This Masquerade" (1973), "I Can't Make Music" (1973), among other gems. For something, um, out of this world: "Calling Occupants of Interplanetary Craft" (1977).

Welcome to Carpenters, Chase, ❤️💔. Yes the greatest voice, possibly of all time. There are a lot of opinions but Karen is right up there. She died from complications from Anorexia Nervosa. She unfortunately became the celebrity that brought that horrible mental condition to the forefront. On the other side she left a legacy of beautiful music. Her brother Richard is a master of the keyboards and the arrangements and orchestration. He formed what became The Carpenters Sound. He is still with us and producing. In 2018 he took a good number of their songs and reproduced them with The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, at Abbey Road Studios in London. He has Karen’s original recordings and used them with new music, it’s delightful, in a word. To help you on your journey down the rabbit hole, here are some songs to get you started. Oh, BTW Leon Russell write the song and contributed 2 more hits to their catalog. Superstar (Official Video) We’ve Only Just Begun Close To You (their 2nd single release and first #1) Rainy Days and Mondays (Official Video) Ticket To Ride (one of 5 Beatles songs they covered and their first minor hit) Top of the World (a more upbeat song) These should get you going and I’m sure The Carpenter Army will find you like I just did. We are a hearty lot and all love and miss Karen. A Song For You was from 1972 and wasn’t actually released as a single. I agree one of their most beautiful songs. Oh and a bonus track. To see a young Karen on drums and singing and live from 1970. Check out this Bacharach/David Medley kzbin.info/www/bejne/r6PWpn95e555qqs

Sh^& I was captivated by her voice the first time I heard their first hit song Close to You in 1970 when I was a kid. I literally remember saying to myself who is this woman, her voice sounds like an angel. Then I kept my pocket transister radio on all day waiting for the song to come back to the top of the playlist as this was long before the internet, it was either listen to the radio or buy the record and back then I couldn't afford .65 cents to buy a 45 record. Yeh .65 cents was a lot for a 12 or 13 year old kid. .65 cents back then could buy a whole weeks worth of popsickles, chocolate eclairs and other Ice cream from the Good Humor Ice Cream man who would hit our neighbor about twice a day in the summer time. This was back in the day when Ice Cream men didn't have to worry about being robbed and shot like today. We had great music and cool cars back then and the world was still sane.

I've often said pretty much the same. In my opinion, the oldies radio stations need to begin with the 1950's when all the great rock 'n' roll began. I suppose they can have so-called oldies stations that begin in the 1980's to the 2010's. To this Baby Boomer, it seemed like the great music would never end. Now I watch young people discovering the greats and wishing for a time machine.I feel we have a duty to pass the music on to the future generations.

I grew up with The Carpenters songs played all the time on radio but I had never heard this song until about a month ago. It's an incredible song for Leon Russell's lyrics, the sax interlude, arrangement, and, of course, Karen's amazing vocals. The reason I never heard this song was it was never released as a single. There were many more Carpenters singles that are better known and were superhits back then but this song is a diamond. Someone thought it would never be a hit single though. Sad.

" I love you in a place where there's no space or time. I love you for my life you are a friend of mine. " " And when my life is over, remember when we were together. We were alone and I was singing this song for you ". Such powerfully passionate words written by the great Leon Russell and sung to perfection by the worlds greatest female singer. Having lived during her sad and tragic story, it brings tears to my eyes to hear her sing this. Even now. The way she hits those deep, low contralto notes so effortlessly, never ceases to amaze. Possibly my favorite Carpenters song was also written by Mr. Russell. Check out " This Masquerade ". Highlights both Karen and Richards awesome talents. " Superstar " also written by Mr. Russell. I was very moved by your awesome reaction. So glad you found this marvelous brother and sister duo. So much timeless music of theirs to enjoy. Keep up the good work young man! RIP KAREN.

They did easy listening with a slight jazz tint. They were signed by Herb Alpert the A in A&M records in 1969 Karen was 19 and Richard her brother 23. Richard was the record producer, arranger, pianist, keyboardist, and songwriter, as well as joining with Karen on harmony vocals (all the harmonies were done by them). Karen was the drummer to start and played some bass on their first album and singer. It was soon realized that Karen was going to be the face of the band so Richard and Herb started trying to convince her that she should move out from behind her drum kit (she was 5ft 4 so was sort of lost behind her kit) to the front of the stage where people could see her sing. After that she spent as much time not drumming as drumming. If you want to do more Carpenters or just want to listen for your own enjoyment, try "For All We Know" "Sweet Sweet Smile" "Solitaire" "For All We Know" "Superstar" "We've Only Just Begun" "Top Of The World" "I Need To Be In Love" "Help" "Ticket To Ride" "Merry Christmas Darling" That should get you familiar with them. My Favorite (if a favorite can be had) would be "Reason To Believe" kzbin.info/www/bejne/oYW6lnubgpugkKs&ab_channel=awhwong

The 70s were great. We had Linda Ronstadt who can sing anything great. Karen who was on the Jazzy side, Heart which was founded by sisters Ann and Nancy Wilson. Ann is also considered one of the best ever. Nancy has a great voice and is a guitar goddess. Just about anything by these gals is great. Heart was considered rock but they wandered into folk and classical influenced stuff. Both sisters were multi instrumentalists also. You saw Karen was a Drummer and a great one. Linda didn't play on stage much but also a multi instrumentalist. She played guitar alone while doing It Doesn't Matter Anymore live and fiddle on Silver Threads and Golden Needles. I got to see both songs live. The latter a song the Springfields did with Dusty. A great British diva. Linda was a force supporting songwriters and spinning off backup people into the Eagles and others into solo careers. She collaborated with the best and made it better. You will find dozens of awesome songs with these people.

I was lucky enough to see the Carpenters when I was 12 in 1972. It was when the song Sing a Song was popular so kids that could sing in the 5th and 6th grade got to sing the song onstage with them and my friends that did said she was so sweet. You should watch the video of her doing a drum solo on a TV special. She was always the happiest playing the drums and was always smiling when she did. The producers insisted she had to get away from the drums and be in front and then told her she needed to lose weight. She was a perfectionist and it looked too her anorexia. She could go to record a record and do it in one take. There aren't many singers that are good enough to do that. We have good singers but honestly I haven't been moved by anyone's voice like I was Karen's until recently. It was when I saw the KZbin video of Adam Lambert Cher's songBelieve to Cher and it brought her to tears. It was beautiful and I have been following his music since. I found out that he is an even better singer than he was on the Believe video and even better he's been the front man for my favorite band Queen; that I assumed weren't performing anymore; for years.
