Brad Delp (R.I.P.) is the lead vocalist's name; he sang all lead AND backing vocals on their first three albums. If you haven't heard "Foreplay / Long Time", "Smokin'", or "Hitch a Ride", then these need to be your next "Boston" reactions.

Every Boston song is pure joy to listen to. All the riffage anyone needs (that tone...), amazing vocals and just FUN. So underrated.

I'm glad you liked the story of the song. Tom Scholz wrote this fictional story from a lot of antidoes and stories from band members around Boston. However, his band Boston started with him in his basement studio that he built while working for a large company as an engineer. He played all the instruments except drums and brought his friend Brad Delp in to sing all the vocal parts, and then shopped a demo around and the band was signed from that. Tom then had to put together a band to play his songs. He even fooled the record company working with recordings from his basement studio instead of a commercial recording studio - only a little work was done there. The production on this debut album is amazing and a lot of the sound came from Tom's equiptment he designed and built; and his mastery of the pick drag and other ways to create sounds with an electric guitar. The Boston sound also included his playing of a Hammond electromachanical organ (i.e. rotating tone-wheels spinning with electro-magnetic pickups like guitar pickups). With all Tom's brillance with the music, production, and instruments; it was Brap Delp's amazing vocals that brought this music to a whole other level. The sweet tone, wide vocal range(see "More Than A Feeling"'s G5), and expert ability to blend his voice with his own voice to create the vocal masterpieces (yes, all vocal parts are Brad). You've also done "More Than A Feeling" and "Let Me Take You Home Tonight", so I'll suggest these next: "Foreplay/Long Time", "A Man I'll Never Be", "Hitch A Ride", "Peace Of Mind", and "Smokin'". For some deeper cuts: "Livin' For You", "Walk On Medley", and "The Star Spangled Banner".

GREAT REACTION!!! I really enjoyed your breakdown. Cool The Engines is one of my favs from Boston. Nowhere near as popular as some of their stuff but it's fast-paced, hard-rockin and leaves you wanting more. Lyrically, it won't challenge you but it's a great song and I hope one day you will get to it. Peace, my brother. ✌

#MugnifyReacts The story behind this song, got him a Record deal (Before he had a band, because he wrote, recorded, this song, playing ALL the instruments by himself on the demo that "Epic Records" 1st heard. Afterwards he actually had to quickly go find band members to record the song on vinyl.) Boston's lead singer Tom Scholz founded "Boston" in 1975 (thru 2013), although he'd been active in the music scene since the late 60s. This song was from their 1st album the self-titled Boston's debut album, released in 1976. The album was certified GOLD only 2 months after its release, and sold another 500,000 copies within 30 days, going PLATINUM for the first time in November 1976, By January 1977, the debut album sold 2 million copies, making it one of the fastest selling debut albums of ALL time in rock history. The album was awarded several accolades, including a Grammy Award nomination for Best New Artist. Boston went on to sell six million albums, including records, 8-tracks and cassettes by December 1977. For the massive popularity they gained, Boston was considered to rival established stars such as Peter Frampton, Fleetwood Mac & Stevie Wonder. Boston has gone 17 times platinum. Tom Scholz was a multi-instrumentalist, Most of the lead guitar, rhythm guitar, bass, keyboards, & backing vocals were performed by Scholz as well as being the main songwriter & sound engineer. Scholz was a Classical music child prodigy & MIT recording engineer. Scholz wrote this song (Rock & Roll band) in his own basement, on a four track he had built himself in his basement studio that he personally designed & created himself, primarily using devices he designed and invented. Primarily using devices he designed and invented himself, that are still used today in the music industry. After the success of Boston, he founded Scholz Research & Development, Inc. to develop and market his inventions, gutitar sound effects, etc under the "Rockman brand" a company he created himself. Scholz holds several patents related to his work at SR&D over the years. In fact, this is how he wrote and recorded, largely solo, the entire demo tape that got him signed to a record contract as the band “Boston”. Tom played ALL of the instruments on the demos, but had a friend (Jim Masdea) who recorded the drum parts, and another who sang. Tom would then send demos of his songs around to record companies. After dozens rejected them, Epic Records finally showed some sense. Tom and his singer friend Brad Delp went from occasionally hanging out in his basement to record demos, to having a recording contract, without ever having to live in cars or play in bars at all. In fact, they had to rush out and hire a drummer, bassist, and so on in order to create the “band” Boston for the first time. The album this song was on was released in 1976 and became the biggest-selling debut album by any artist up to that time. For Boston to not be in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, and to had never even been nominated into the RRHOF is ridiculous. Especially since Tom Scholz had invented many musical innovative equipment that are still used today, including but not limited to creating Rockman amps, acoustic/electric gutitar pedals, equalizers, microphones, multiple signal processing equipment, distortion attenuator, headphones, sound processors, etc. and many many other sound & recording equipment still used today. Even custom inventions personally for individuals like Joe Satriani, Megadeth, Def Leppard, & many others, through the 2 companies he created himself called ¹ "Scholz Research & Development, Inc." & ² "Rockman" *Link to his inventions = en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scholz_Research_&_Development,_Inc. *Link to video of Tom Scholz talking about the equipment & his studio he invited = m.kzbin.info/www/bejne/hIq7mJmwi8-litk www.npr.org/2014/05/22/314589125/tom-scholz-sound-machine

Lol. Exactly. Tom seems to have written this song about the common experience, not the Boston experience. But a great song, none the less.

Rock bands did it this way all the way up until the post-grunge/ early 2000'[s era....those were the last REAL days of those bands that literally came off the streets without money and social media BS. Boston always been one of the best.I like hearing you are understanding how rock feeds each other from past to present back n forth.

Boston's first album was primarily written, arranged, and recorded by a multi-instrumentalist and MIT-trained engineer--Tom Schwartz--in his basement studio using devices he designed and invented (with Brad Delp on vocals). The album was a sensation. It was only after its release that an actual band was put together and toured. The spaceships on the album cover are guitars. The graphic designer at the time thought they were cheesy. Now they're iconic.

That is a good song about their early times and being on their first album it paints a picture of how it was for any one who was and is still striving for that one break when it all was hard work and a gamble because so many who tried did not make it .

Dude his vocals get SO high, I think Rick Beato gets into the nitty gritty of one of his vocals on his More Than A Feeling episode of "what makes this song great" which is always a cool watch since you're 7:21 getting into the details, he has the masters and can go track by track. found it: kzbin.info/www/bejne/r5-pf6dqqcx1gJI

The lead guitarist played every instrument on this album. He recorded it in his basement. He is a brilliant electrical engineer and made all the sound effects devices himself. He had to find a singer, and this would never happen again these days.

Great to see you react to this. And really, this debut album is considered to be one of the greatest in rock music history. You can't go wrong with anything on it anything on it, and really, there's a pretty good flow to the album. You can work your way through it and just skip the ones you've already reacted to. They do have quite a variety but they do have their own sound for sure. I saw them in 77 in a small to medium-sized Arena not long after this album dropped and I was in junior high and went with my girlfriend and some other friends and we had such a good time. They were so good live. Really really good.

Tom Sholtz said that this song is basically bullshit. It's a fictional story, and a bit of "self-mythologizing" (see also: "Billy the Kid" by Billy Joel).
