The Madison Square garden crowd wasn't used to Muhammad's pulling his head back. Jones was missing they thought he was connecting. The referee who was one of the judges scored it perfectly. 8 rounds Ali, one round Jones, one round even.

I believe Johnny Carson left the fight at the last bell to do the Tonight Show and broadcast that Doug Jones won the fight and was astonished when told the result. No doubt Ali was a great fighter probably the best heavyweight fighter ever,and very sweet guy.

Clay took at least 4 shots to the brain stem in that first clinch and never said a word to the ref, didn't start rubbing the back of his head like fighters do these days - even when they don't get rabbit punched - no reaction. He just went on fighting.

This was prime Ali and many people believe that Jones beaten Ali. Can't blame them. This version of Clay I believe is beatable. Ali after come back was stronger and had a good chin. Prime Mike would destroy him I guess if they were of the same age. Truth is Ali never fought a great opponent before his first exile except an impaired Liston who couldn't box.

Yes he was robbed of a career and we were robbed of an Ali we never truly got to see. His true legacy will never be known to us. Ali was improving all the time, had his career not been interrupted I think he could of retired undefeated if he'd chose to.

@@sidharthk2793 Your comment makes no sense tied to Ali's first period of boxing, he was only three years in from winning the title at 22 ... I offered an opinion on the very likelihood of Ali retiring undefeated had his career not been interrupted. How is that an excuse, its what I sincerely believe given in part that those fighters he fought on his return (and beat I may add) only Frazier he would of met before 1970, the much faster and more mobile Ali that beat the likes of Williams, Foley and Liston would have had little trouble. On his return his foot speed had slowed dramatically, quickness afoot being an essential part of his defence.The faster Ali would of met Frazier around '68 time beating him comfortably imo. Norton would not have been a ranked contender during Ali's time out and Foreman was winning Olympic gold in' 68 I believe. By the time Foreman got a title shot Ali would possibly be thinking of retirement. Ali may have stuck around for one more fight with Foreman, he still beats him but not in the same way as the Zaire '74 finish. I believe a 1960s Ali beats the above mentioned without much trouble.
@sidharthk279310 ай бұрын
@@barryf3395 You are deluded. Prime Ali won by robbery against Doug Jones. Ali improved after retirement. His chin improved. Pre exile Ali got knocked down many times. After exile his chin improved. Ali was fast. So was Joe. In fact Frazier deteriorated faster than Ali. Because his style doesn't give durability.Joe gained weight and became slow and his eyesight was an issue. Prime Frazier was a monster. Ali was fast even after retirement and he was not untouchable. Please rewatch his fight before Liston it was a robbery.

Jones has no killer instinct. None at all. He hurt Ali early in the first and literally did nothing about it. Just let Ali recover. Exact same thing happens a few rounds later. No ability to lift his game and capitalize.
