Cooper is very underrated, one of the best left hooks in the history of boxing. I’d say even better than Joe Frazier’s. He really used to dig that thing in hard and fast, it was a thing of beauty. He had one problem though… his eyes used to cut really easily and most of his losses were due to doctor stoppages because of cuts. If he would’ve knocked down Ali just a little earlier he would’ve won. Ali only comes back around just in time for the next round and Angelo Dundee even tried to cut the gloves to get more time, if it happened in the middle of the round Ali would’ve been finished and he might never have become known as “the greatest”.

@@lujitsu1251 Ali showed mercy on Coppers eye until he got knock down.... play time was over after that.
@stefanp.40944 жыл бұрын
Dangerous game by Ali. He could have finished Cooper in four rounds if he wanted. Instead he played around and was knocked down seriously. Mercy is not a good advice in boxing.
@MegaCokamo4 жыл бұрын
Noo Hall what are you talking about? He opened up his eye with a split glove. That glove was never changed but it bought Ali time after that knockdown

Sonny Banks in 1962 hit Ali with a good left hook and dropped him. Joe Frazier also plastered Ali with a left hook in the 15th round of their 1971 "Fight of The Century".

The late Peter Wilson, a boxing columnist who'd seen them all from before Joe Louis, said of this fight that he thought Clay, as he was then, could have stopped Cooper any time he wished, but "Five he predicted, and five it was to be." And sure enough, you can see he's carrying the Brit somewhat before round five, getting complacent enough to be dumped on his arse. I say had he been dropped in the middle of the ring one minute into the round, he'd have still beaten Cooper. that would have brought the animal, the real dog, out of Ali: and if 'Enery wasn't cut, he'd have taken a hellacious beating. I think he's one boxer who should be grateful for his tissue-paper epidermis, in hindsight. Had he beaten Clay, unlikely, but had he, he would have been next in line to face Liston. Did I hear some years ago that his manager, Jimmy Wicks, wanted no part of Liston? If true, wise man. The film for Liston-Cooper would have been banned for under-18s and carried a health warning for everybody else. Because it would have been pugilistic manrape.

Probably best. They do it for money and I'm sure if the fight is over too soon they wouldn't be paid as much. The audience has to be entertained. I criticise American wrestling for turning it into a fancy dress circus, but boxing would be better like that.
