Ive seen the complete match those days. Lubbers was no match, but Ali wasn't too prepared either as he couldn't finish it off. Earlyer that year Lubbers had a shot for the European title. It was a fine and close match, but Lubbers lost from Joe Bugner at points. Than Bugner had his shot at Ali. Bugner lost but made a good impression. The very same year Ali had lost from Ken Norton, the second defeat in his career. He got his revanche, but appearently Ali was no longer invincible. So all this together, Lubbers must have thought he had a chance, while Ali was looking for a few good scores to wipe his defeat. He was very arrogant in het press, saying": how dare you to compete with a champ like me! I hoped this would trigger Lubbers but it didn't. In general boxing was at a much higher standard in the US than in Europe those days.

I thought Roberto Duran was the only fighter to quit in the ring. This shows M. Ali's total dominance in the ring, to make your opponent just say I quit or wave his hands in defeat is demoralizing. *Rest In Power, AND STILL!*
@marcelboogaard54495 жыл бұрын
Ricky Stansbury Lubbers didn’t quit in the ring. Although comprehensively beaten he didn’t quit and as a mark of respect Ali let him have the last round. Take it you didn’t see the full fight.

I wonder if Ali could hit hard like Tyson how many boxer's could hve fear to fight him or he could hurt them badly. .cos he just targeted the face nt the body..great ali best sports man wth no anger in his heart
@Nuvendil5 жыл бұрын
Not many fighters with that kind of mobility at Heavyweight hit as hard as the swarmers and brawlers. Walcott had a harder punch, but so much of his career was spent in poverty that he really didn't reach his potential until his early 30s when naturally his maximum speed and power were not going to be as high as if he had reached his full potential when he was younger, so who knows what he could have been. Larry Holmes hits harder and is quite mobile, but not quite to the level of Ali and not as unorthodox in his movement. If Ali could have built his power up while staying mobile, that would have been impressive. But it's tough to achieve because part of that mobility is staying relatively light. But that makes generating the force harder. You can still do it - Joe Louis generated tremendous force at just over 200 - but the punching techniques are not as compatible with this free flow. Compare the way Ali punches in the 60s to how Louis did in his prime, you can see the difference in styles and the difference in results.

Ali had nothing to prove. He clearly didn't WANT or NEED to knock his opponent out. He WON fair & square. Probably by a lot on the score cards. Mostly with one hand. Howard Cosell always finds a way to put Ali down. Football scores for the bored. Music for the Internet. EITerribleProduction names itself well.

Muhammad had just beaten Ken Norton the previous month, and he was saving his right hand for his rematch with Smokin' Joe Frazier the upcoming January. He didn't need it against Lubbers, and this was at a time when saving his hands was important. That's because he had bigger fish to fry - like Joe Frazier and George Foreman.

+metal shadow the hedgehog I watched all three fights LIVE. I'm old enough to have seen these battles when they were happening, and I can tell you....Norton only won the first fight. Their third fight was very close, but Ali landed more punches.
@metalshadowthehedgehog30067 жыл бұрын
wm young More punches dosent mean he wins...If the punches do more damage and have greater effect they can be worth more than quick flea bite punches or flurries. Look at lenord vs duran 1 lenard outlanded him slitghtly but duran still got the win.

Ali's right hand obviously hurting. This was a mismatch considering size,speed, skill and experience vs. top flight opposition. However with the handicap of a badly bruised right hand should have evened thing's out a bit. VERY surprised this went the distance even with all thing's considered.
