The reason upper 5 was so easily killed by muichiro was because muichiro manifested his demon slayer mark during the fight. That basically made him immensely more powerful. Just like how tanjiro almost killed daki by himself when his mark appeared. Without that mark appearing muichiro would have struggled a lot more. Upper 5 is actually crazy strong, but the demon slayer mark really is a crazy power boost, plus muichiro is a child prodigy

tanjiro's mark on his forehead isn't expand. the original mark on his forehead is burning scar (mentioned on season 2). When it looks like it's expanding, the real mark on that scar is actually revealed.then it's disappears and returns to looking like its injured.
