I feel like people who ask about cheat meals still don't understand that veganism isn't just a diet. My aunt still asks me that, I've been vegan for years now. If it was just a diet, yea I probably would eat a piece of cake at someone's birthday, but like Hannah I don't see animal products as food anymore, its just something that is no longer in my life. A lot of people also seem to think veganism is solely about health, so when they see a vegan eating junk food they makes comments like "but that's not healthy" which I think is related to the diet thing again. They don't get that veganism doesn't mean healthy it just means no animal products.

I think this is exactly right. "Cheating" implies indulgence--something thoroughly, rapturously enjoyable. But the emotion I most closely associate with animal products isn't delight. It's disgust. There's one exception though... When the experiences attached to non-vegan foods (like mom's cooking growing up, or fond memories of pizza night) produce a longing for people I love or great times I've had with them. That still induces some cognitive dissonance that I don't think will ever go away. It's easy to forget that this social component of food is really powerful for new vegans (and old vegans alike).

You're conversation on relationships and marriage is EXACTLY what I needed to hear right now. I just turned 30 and my boyfriend and I are on the verge of ending our 3 year relationship. I am feeling so sad about it because I thought I'd be married with kids by 30. If I stay in this relationship I would be forcing it just so I could have marriage and kids. I definitely feel that societal pressure to settle down right now. Anyways, it's nice hear that you guys have the same experiences and I'm not alone. Thanks guys ♥️

I'm 36 years and I've never really had a long term relationship, and there's so much pressure all around me all my friends are in pairs or married. My younger cousins are now in relationships and married. I don't really want to be married, I can feel the pinch society is putting on me. Its tough stuff.

My husband and I were long-distance for 4 years. About 10 months after we started dating (we'd been friends for a couple years before that), he was accepted to optometry school in Indiana. I still had two years of nursing school left in Canada, so he went & I stayed. We got married the summer that I graduated, but he had two years of optometry school left, so he went back to Indiana & I started working in Canada. Not gonna lie- long-distance marriage is rough, but we made it through! Nisha's right- keeping the communication up & having the end-date in mind makes all the difference! Now we've been married for 8 years and it couldn't be better!

My brother was so proud when I came over because he told me some snacks they had and I said the Oreos were vegan. So the entire night when they mentioned non vegans food he said, “But the Oreos are vegan 😊”

one nice snack is when I take dried chickpeas, soak/rinse them for a few hours, and then eat them raw, like popcorn - because it has a crunch to it, along with a planty taste

I literally don’t live around another ethical vegan. So it’s really tough sometimes because I’m constantly having to justify why I don’t have a “ cheat meal” it’s really tough. But even my family will try to get me to “cheat” ahhh frustration.

Love this video! Do you guys have any advice/tips on being vegan in college? I'm a second year college student and I've been vegan for about 9 months now (vegetarian for 2.5 years) and I find that I have more difficulty being vegan at school than I do when I'm home for breaks. The dining options are often limited on campus. There are a lot of social norms in college surrounding fast food/eating unhealthy foods which are often times not vegan.

My favorite animal is just dogs. And cats. Boring, but true ... though I've come to question whether we should keep them as pets (I don't have any currently, but have in the past). Cutting out an animal's reproductive parts seems un-vegan, but being part of overpopulating them by leaving them to breed also seems wrong. Not our decision to make, I guess.
