@pagatryx54514 жыл бұрын
The Junglebook one was alright when it came out, the problem is Disney is so creatively bankrupt that they have to remake their past successes for any chance of selling tickets. And usually, the past successes' 2D classical animation is far nicer to look at. On top of that, story goes overboard in typical hollywood style to be more surface level entertainment than having much substance. and so usually doesn't compete with the original anyway... Remakes are already a bad enough cash grab to do, but when the remake is worse and less enjoyable than the classics, it's just pointless. And yeah, maybe their purpose is to sell them to a new generation, but if I had kids I wouldn't be showing them the remakes.

Personally, I am becoming more and more artistically terrified for the alleged upcoming remake of “The Hunchback of Notre Dame” with David Henry Hwang as the supposed writer. Ever since I fell in love with the animated musical, read the original book, and saw how the Disneyfied stage plays like “Der Glöckner Von Notre Dame” could create a nice blending of both versions (even to the point of Esmeralda dying at the end), I always wanted a live-action remake to exist that tries something similar. The idea has been in my head, even before the live-action remakes became a Disney fad, and I even did my own fan projects of it on my KZbin channel. But now, unless Disney both realizes that they cannot just coast on nostalgia with Hunchback and lets its writers make a dark and dramatic musical with passion, the remake that Disney releases is likely going to figuratively hurt me far more than any others have yet.

The original Mulan showed her strength in her intelligence, not in her physical strength. She learned to fight in the army, sure, but that wasn't her main strength. Her fighting skills helped her defensively, not offensively. She took down Attila the Hun, sorry I mean Chenggis Khan... dang it I forget his name. Anyways, she doesn't fight the big baddie head on. She outwits him. The moment she got his sword from him and pinned down his tunic with it, it was Mushu who finished him off. Mulan was known for her planning, her strategy, just like when she took down 99.9% of the Hun army with an avalanche. THAT is the Mulan we love, because it shows that, in a world where the strongest people have power, Mulan doesn't have what it takes in strength alone, but can inspire people with strategy in order to fight back. That was her strong suit. The "girl power" thing doesn't work, especially not in Ancient China where everything is decided by the skill and strength of a man's sword.

It's fake feminism, like the animated version has so much more realism in terms of being a woman in Asian family & the kind of weight that comes with it. And don't get me started with Mulan's Jedi power. Like come onnn, the reason why people love Mulan is because she's just a normal girl who work harder & find more creative ways to solve problems. She doesn't have the body strength, but she's got the wit & much faster. She embrace her uniqueness instead of unleash her hidden force 🙄. In the original, Mulan was a normal girl who was being true to herself and by sheer determination and smarts, she prevails and saves China. In the remake, Mulan is not a normal girl, she was born with supernatural powers. So it wasn't what she chose to be, it was who she was born to me. This RUINS the positive message to children everywhere, but more especially the girls. The original: "Girls, you can be just as good as the boys if you try hard and use your head!" The Remake: "Girls, you can only be as good as the boys if you're magic!"

There was zero character growth for Mulan. As a child Mulan is this super powerful, ultra agile, supremely gifted mary sue. Goes off the war and has to pretend to be just another weak wimpy little man (yuck). Then decides she is a superhero, screw all this hiding. This is NOT character growth.
@margaretbakly78104 жыл бұрын
The character growth is shown by her deciding to show her true self. Being loyal brave and true is the thing they show the most and she realized she needed to be true to her heart. I liked that she chose to show herself instead of being found out. It shows the integrity and the braveness of mulan
@geraldm47284 жыл бұрын
@@margaretbakly7810 When a character starts off as an amazing prodigy then hides it then later shows what she was from the start it is not character growth. That is called a mary sue character. In the original she went from somebody that had no idea what she was doing to absorbing the training and dedicating herself to BECOMING better for herself, her fellow warriors, her family, and her nation. She worked her butt off for it. Not once was she shown as this spectacular specimen that just has all the talent. No, that would be boring. Instead she was shown as a great woman who overcame the prejudice of a nation that didn't think women should fight and she overcame the absolute terror so her dad wouldn't go out and die. @@geraldm4728 just to build on your comment. The "hero's journey" is a classical depiction of what a story centered on a hero needs to captivate the audience and make it relatable. There's the "journey" which is usually the hero struggling a LOT to become stronger/better. Then they have a big "crisis/failure". And then they do a "comeback/rise up". This movie straight up jumps the journey and the failure. They just jump the journey. They change the crisis to "slight discomfort" and then they change the big comeback to "no discomfort". As a viewer you have no interest built up, from the start we know exactly everything that's going to happen, which is nothing special. Try to play an RPG where you from the start have all the best gear, the highest level and every skill. Then come tell me how fun of a game it was to walk to the end. The struggle is what people love, people love the "underdog" and they always will, cause the masses are petty.

@@Ravenbones even still, every single plot point is there. They followed the story board for the animation, but removed all of the elements that actually made it work and gave it charm, and added in an unnecessary witch subplot along with Disney's interpretation of Chi, which is basically Disney's version of "the force." No training necessary. You can do anything and everything you want for no inexplicable reason. Whether Disney wanted to do something different or not, they copied the storyboard of the original, and added in a bunch of unnecessary filler, as if trying to reach a "differentiation" quota, rather than trying to do things different out of actually wanting to tell a unique story (which is an even clearer indication that they added these elements for no other reason than to appeal to the Chinese government). And what's more, the original storyboard was made with music in mind, with music being the defining bond between scenes and events. You can't remove it and hope to have the same story. The entire thing had to be thrown out, and the movie had to be completely original. Instead, they went with the storyboard and whatever changes they made were so underdeveloped that the narrator had to literally step in halfway through the movie and tell us what should have been the payoff for a well-developed conflict. We got 2 scenes showing Mulan's shame in the lie, not helped by such wooden acting, and then the narrator to tell us she had had enough. The movie was just contrived garbage. It had none of the connecting techniques, none of the charm and flow that the original had (despite Disney wanting to copy it with some alterations), and whatever they did add was so underdeveloped that it stuck out of the rest of the story like a sore thumb, noticeably forcibly inserted, not interwoven

Funnily enough, the original story of Mulan (called the "Ballad of Mulan") actually does have Mulan be trained in fighting, archery, and sword fighting by the time she enlists in the army. But this is in great contrast to her first depiction in the story, which is her in front of a loom (considered a feminine symbol). So basically, the original story still shows Mulan focusing on getting the job done and saving her father whilst contrasting traditional feminine roles (symbolized by the loom). A much more respectable premise than how they try to force the "girl power, fighting traditional feminine stereotypes" message down our throats in most movies nowadays, I'd say.

So, I just watched the Mulan 2020 movie. This will have spoilers so be warned. Now, this is going to be an unbiased review, where I will ignore the fact that the main actress supports police brutality in Hong Kong. So what do I think of this movie? If I could describe one word to this movie, its that it is very Soulless. The only character that I genuinely liked was Donnie yen of course. Now, to get to the meat of this movie on why it felt soulless, let’s look at what the animated movie had. Mushu. The Exclusion of important characters. Mushu to Mulan was like what the Genie was to Aladdin. or Timon and Pumba was to Lion King Yeah, Aladdin and Simba were the main characters. But what made the movie went from “good” to near masterpiece was because of Genie, timon and Pumba. Their charming personalities and wacky content made the movies they were in from “good” to near masterpiece. If those characters werent in the movie, then the movies probably wouldnt be well-liked. Same with Mushu. Mushu brought the spark and energy that Mulan needed, which is why Mulan is genuinely a great film. Now, I understand that this movie is trying to be a movie about the real Mulan, and not the animated Mulan. But….. it has the same story elements as the animated Mulan. This movie is like a combination of the 2009 Chinese Mulan movie, and the Mulan cartoon. As a result it feels weird. Mushu, a great and likeable character, turns into…. a phoenix that acts as a map for Mulan. This movie also did not have Captain Li Shang from the animated movie. Li Shang was probably my favorite character. He was the perfect example of a male side character in a female led character done right. He was developed, had a likeable personality, and was very charismatic. Li Shang was split into two people, but those characters were kind of boring. The second problem with this movie is 2. The Lack of Music Now, i understand the director wanting to make it realistic, after all warriors dont just randomly sing out of nowhere. However, the problem with this is that the movie was boring. I am sorry, but like I said, this movie is trying very hard to be accurate to the real Mulan story, and seemingly copies the 2009 mulan movie in china. But this movie also tries to lighten the tone and just slap a Disney label on it. See, the 2009 Mulan movie is actually more accurate imo. But when I was watching this movie and seeing how this movie is trying to resemble like the original animated movie, I got bored and realized part of my boredom was that there were no songs. I think what made the live action movies remakes at least more bearable to watch were the songs because it could keep me interested. This movie doesnt have the Who I am song. But most importantly, it does not have the top 5 best Disney songs of all time “I’ll Make a man out of you.” Finally, the reason why this movie wasnt good 3. The villains The animated mulan movie had a villain name Shan Yu. The villain was not developed, but he was menacing. Seriously, the animated movie had darker themes than the live action. In the live action, heres the problem. There are two villains. What made Shan yu threatening and menacing was that he was the main villain. But in this movie, we get two villains, and as a result the villains dont feel developed or memorable. Seriously. this woman sides with Mulan in the end because she’s “a woman” or “Female empowerment.” or something. Like no offense, but if you’re going to betray your partner for the opponent simply because the opponent is a “woman”…. that’s not going to be satisfying. One more thing. 4. Mulan This is really personal. Because believe it or not, Mulan is my favorite Disney princess. No, its not because she’s Asian. Mulan was my favorite because she ws relatable. She was the underdog. Mulan was one of hte few characters who had flaws and lost battles. But she did whine and complain like a good girl? No, she sucked it up, overcame many challenges and became a worthy warrior. She proved that she didnt need to have masculine features to be a warrior, all it take was hard work and perserverance to achieve greatness. So what did this live action do? Well, it made Mulan the Chosen One. So what happened was they turned Mulan, a beloved Disney princess into a Mary Sue for their live action movies, like rey from star wars. Mulan in the live-action is nearly perfect, she succeeds almost all the time. She is the Chosen One, she is destined to defeat the bad guy. When you tell me it was her destiny to defeat an invading army, I am sorry but I lose interest in the character. In conclusion, this movie wasn’t memorable. It was boring. I am officially over the live action hype train. No, its not because its led by a female individual. Its because this movie felt boring or souless. It was way too long, didnt have heart in it. This movie didnt have any memorable characters, dialogue too long, and lack of developing villains. Review for this movie: 4 out of 10.

Just to make this more horrible, the original Mulan folklore had no witch. It actually didn't have a villain at all. It focuses more on the hardship she had to endure for her family while hiding her identity. If you want dark, gritty & realistic, the original folklore is the most. And I really wanted to see that aspect. But noooooooooooo they had to go the dumbass route. Jeremy, Boys season 2 is out, hope you're enjoying it right now.

@dathuynh22434 жыл бұрын
Now I have heard from some other comments about the original ballad/story of Mulan, and that she had amazing martial arts skills from the start and that helped with the ruse because no men would expect a woman to be good at martial arts. Now, if you want to be inclusive and emphasize equality, wouldn’t the animated movie’s approach be better? I get some people’s opinion that bringing her down to normal might not be faithful to the source material and make her less impressive; but I would argue that making her a born badass actually implicitly asserts that “only truly impressive women can be as good as or better than men”.

The more of these remakes Disney churns out, the more I just think - Imagine loving a Disney movie with all your heart, growing up loving that movie, having it be so near and dear to your heart, and THEN as a working adult years down the line you get a chance to be a part of it when they announce a new official project directly tied to this thing that's almost a part of you because it helped you grow into the person you are today. Imagine that joy and excitement. Pouring that love into every detail you have your hands on. Then imagine the end result just completely overshadowing all of your hard work. I'd be crushed. I first had this thought watching Beauty and the Beast - so many things I could see on screen were just so damn wonderously lovely; the set design, the wardrobe, all the craftsmanship in the details... only for whoever is in charge of knitting it all together and/or the actors on-screen to just drop the ball so hard that so many of our impressions of the whole thing suffered. I got CHILLS when I saw what happened to the Artemis Fowl project as well. They build these adaptations on the backs of folks who love these works with all their hearts, only to leave us with a final product that somehow lacks any heart at all. It's horrifying. To all folks behind the scenes who poured their heart and souls into making these movies look so damn beautiful, I salute you.

I don't think you understand how much money they made from those movies. Lol. All of them are hits financially. That last Lion King movie made a boatload.

I swear, the only good live action remake is The Jungle Book.

At least the director cared _a lot_ about the original film.

@@acrsclspdrcls1365 Too bad he didn't do the same for The Lion King.

I liked the remake of Cinderella. None of the other ones though.

I liked Aladdin live action to an extent as well, probably because of the soundtrack. And Beauty and the Beast but because of Lefou and Gaston mainly. And Jungle Book live action's tone is what exactly I'm looking for.

Pete's Dragon, Christopher Robin, 101 Dalmatians and Alice in Wonderland aka the good live action remake films for me. I'll stick with 1998 cartoon movie version whose I grew up with.
