😁😁😁 Dam Onnu nirthedo. ee dam onnum pottan pokunilla. There has been greater strengthening of the dam done in 1979, 1989 and 1981. But it has not been reported by the media. It was since 1979 when there were fears on the strength of the dam, two points emerged. One was to build a new dam and the other one was to strengthen the dam. Strengthening was the better option, experts suggested. That is how the strengthening happened in three phases. came to know that the supervision of the strengthening was done by a (now 94-year-old) Malayalee. He has been living in Thiruvananthapuram. At last, after persistent struggle (term it begging) he agreed to meet me. It was Dr K.C. Thomas who was assigned to supervise the strengthening of the dam. He has given me all the documents and explained it to me. It is a gravity dam (means thickness determines the strength of the dam). Since it was old, its thickness has to be increased. The work to increase the thickness started in 1979. For the dam measuring 372 metres, concrete capping with 12 tonnes of concrete per metre was done. So in the first phase 4464 tonne concrete was used. In the second phase, on these concrete capping, big pillars were built. Through the holes in the pillars steel cables were drilled in and has 10 feet down the beyond the granite floor. Then, in order to avoid the wavering of the pillars, quick setting cement was used in high pressure. One hundred two pillars were thus built. In the third phase, in the downstream part of the dam, a new wall was built. It was 10 metres (33 feet) thick. Using the new technology, a new wall itself has been created in such a thickness to the old structure. After the work, the dam has become as new as a new dam.
