Voice Actors in Arkham games are on another level. Hearing audio logs and phone calls of Zsasz always sent shivers down my spine. The pure enjoyment in his voice as he remember every kill and every scar he's taken on himself is... brutal, I dunno. It feels like a primal fear for me.
@sadgirlhours408811 ай бұрын
I know there's a lot of issues with arkham knight but Troy baker snapped his back in half by carrying the whole thing with his voice performance. I saw a clip of someone taking too long to rescue the Jason hallucination made me sick to my stomach. I literally watched the collector, which is a horror movie similar to saw, with nightmare scenarios and Troy bakers voice acting left more of an impact than anything in that movie. And if you've seen it, that says a lot.
@mattcallanan66279 ай бұрын
@@sadgirlhours4088 i know you made this comment a month ago but i disagree. Not that he did a good job, because while i didn't like the Arkham Knight much as a character and i personally prefer Jensen Ackles' take on the voice and character, he did a really good job as he always does in any role. But i disagree that he carried it. That implies the other actors weren't doing a good job, or that only his performance made it a good game. Jim Gordon's actor, forget his name but he's Mike in Breaking Bad, did an incredible job. Kevin Conroy of course was phenomenal as Batman. Mark Hamill gave a great performance as the Joker, again, par for the course. And there's more, but i won't go on. Wasn't my favourite out of the 3 games (except for gameplay) and i feel had the weakest story, but the voice acting was on fucking point. I mean listen to Pyg in those audio tapes in this video. Idek who that voice actor is but he worked his ass off for a side character that you only interact with in a single short fight at the end of a mission. Yet he put his heart and soul into it just to capture the character well. Don't insult the other actors by saying Troy Baker carried it cause it's just not true.
@sadgirlhours40889 ай бұрын
@mattcallanan6627 I think I was saying that the voice acting carried the character. But like.... girl not Jensen Ackles that's the supernatural guy 😭😭 I heard some of it and it was pretty bad Edit: Oh wait no I was saying that lol. Idk I still stand by my opinion on that. I'm not discrediting any other voice actors. The VAs in the arkham games are all incredible and they all did fantastic work on the game. But I just think that Troy baker was on a whole other level. My guess is because Jason is supposed to be the emotional crutch of the story, whether you care about his character or not. Plus the situations he was in - crying, being tortured, being a 20 something year old who has the emotional intelligence of a teenager - require you to be perfect or you break emmersion. I've seen a lot of scenes get ruined when someone can't pretend to cry. Again, no intention to discredit anyone but he had a stand out performance because of the realism to the performance. I'm so used to really emotional cutscenes get ruined by ok voice acting and when it doesn't happen I'm like, gah damn

Professor Pyg is one of the few Batman villains to actually be insane. He has absolutely no grasp on reality and can't distinguish right from wrong. He's far sicker than the Joker or other villains. But in a way, that makes him less evil but, at the same time, more dangerous. That being said, it cannot be overstated what kind of a brilliant voice actor Dwight Schultz is. It is extremely difficult to sound genuinely insane, shifting your voice like that mid-sentence, mid-word even, while talking absolute nonsense.

Despite how abject and repulsive his actions are, I struggle to even call him "evil" because I don't think the man has even the most basic understanding of morality. I think a big element of Professor Pyg's horror is the way his madness is depicted, specially in the comic shown. Where characters like Two-Face, Scarecrow or The Mad Hatter have adopted a persona, and everything they do is thematically entuned with a specific aesthetic and role, Pyg is incongruent and disorganized. He's a mad scientist obsessed with perfection, but he also oinks and pisses himself. His rambling doesn't make sense, not just because its amoral or not thought enough, but in the way that they can jump from point A to point B with no clear connection. It's one of the most realistic depictions of mental decay, and that makes it terrifying. Also, the body-horror and lobotomization help.

Yeah but the "incongruent and disorganized" part of him is why he is kind of a pointless character. Like what other stories are you going to tell with Pyg, that dont ultimately boil down to "gonna kidnap people and turn them into abominations". If your answer is "well it can be anything, hes an amoral maniac", then you have just written Joker in a pig mask. Pyg only being obsessed with perfection, but also being way too mentally unstable makes him too much of an one-off character. Once he is detained, he shouldnt have the mental faculties to escape imprisonment. He would need someone to break him out. And once he is out, he is far too easy to detain because he is not a threat to Batman. There is very little you can do with a character like that, that you couldnt do with an existing character in Batmans rogues gallery. And because he doesnt really have a strong theming outside of wearing a pig mask, why would you ever pick him as your foil when you can pull more thematically interesting and stronger characters to use? (Unless you wrote Pyg, and hes "your" character so you continue to push him).

Popularized by Walter Jackson Freeman, a guy who didn't care even a little bit about anyone except himself. Surgery was a performance with him as the star, which is why he would brag so much about how fast he was and do insane things like two lobotomies at the same time. Before him lobotomies were used sparingly as a last resort for the "incurably insane". A procedure with risks and considerable side effects, which could be outweighed by the positives. They thought it was a cure for various mental illnesses they didn't know were different things, and it's understandable how they'd think that. Compare a schizophrenic who's screaming about how everyone's a demon trying to trick him so he won't save the world by killing himself, to one who's a bit apathetic but mostly content just doing whatever. The modern, very prevalent, equivalent is overmedication. An excessively high dose of anti-psychotic meds is constantly being used on psych patients, presumably so they'll shut up and be docile. Freeman figures out how to do this stuff quick and easy with a method nicknamed "ice pick lobotomy", and he thinks everyone should acknowledge how awesome of him that was so he starts touring. Medicine was crude back then but this wasn't even medicine, just pure ego. He would do live performances outside the operating theater, which was more of a show back then with spectators from the public and all, house calls, and of course the double lobotomy trick where he performed on two victims at the same time. All the while shouting from the rooftops how quickly and easily he could perform such incredible life saving surgery with the Freeman method! Any negative side effects you may see in the patient will sort themselves out eventually. Just treat them kind of like a child for now and soon they'll be better than ever! That melancholy wife of yours won't complain any more, she'll find the bliss of motherhood more than sustains her. Oh and he also did it to children, the youngest was 4 years old... He spent so much time and effort on his crusade to convince anyone he could that lobotomies using his method was the best treatment for anything, he couldn't be bothered with truth or empathy when he had en empire to build. He also brought before and after pictures. Did he burn all the photos where the after picture wasn't happier looking than the before picture? I don't have any proof but yes of course he did, obviously! Professor Pyg is Batman's dark and twisted mirror image because they both are obsessed with perfection in their own way

Nah, I still think Joker torture is worse. The pain’s over pretty quick with this guy while Joker often keeps the pain going for ridiculously long amounts of time.

I don't think it's a coincidence that this character was created *one month* after Bioshock released. The similarities between this character and the plastic surgeon Dr. Steinman who is obsessed with perfection are too similar. I know that kind of character probably isn't overly unique, and I'm glad you noticed the similarity yourself, but I find the short time between that game dropping and this character's introduction (granted, a soft introduction) too coincidental to be a simultaneous creation.
@jordanloux3883 Жыл бұрын
Nah, crafting comics storylines (and getting them approved at all) like this can take months or years. Plus evil surgeons are nothing new.
@ForeverLaxx Жыл бұрын
@@jordanloux3883 It's notable that his first introduction into the story is essentially just as a background corpse with the claim that he had a "full backstory" that the creators weren't sure would even work. It took *2 years* after this before he'd show up again and, surprise surprise, he's a mad doctor obsessed with perfection via surgery. His actual gimmick that makes him stand out is that he enjoys pain regardless of whether he's receiving it or dealing it out. It's easy to take inspiration from another medium that does a particular character well and essentially place a proto-version of that into a story where before a nobody could have stood in order to expand on it later. Writers do that all the time.
@jordanloux3883 Жыл бұрын
@@ForeverLaxx But it takes longer than a month to plan a comic arc is a point.
@ForeverLaxx Жыл бұрын
@@jordanloux3883 That's why he only actually shows up as a fleshed-out character 2 years after his first appearance. You can put an introduction "cameo" of a mad doctor into a single panel or two easily without having to go into any detail. You plant the seed, get the character to exist (and thereby the copyright), and figure it out later. Happens all the time.

Unpopular opinion. But this is one of my favorite missions in Arkham Knight. I have the Playthru on my channel for the whole mission. I even take time to look around because I love little hints like that and games. I also really love the really dark and macabre stuff from Batman. And this encapsulates the dirty streets of Gotham perfectly. The fact that they keep getting up after you beat them up because they don’t have any pain receptors anymore is just skin crawling. You just want to get rid of him so fast but that’s a good thing. Rocksteady really understood the character. But I don’t think he can be done in the movie correctly. Unless they want to go all out.

The secret society being called "spiral" is cool because the saw movies have major themes with both pigs and spirals, even to the point that a spin-off movie got named spiral. The main reason for this is that they both represent rebirth, which is what Jigsaw believes his games do to the people who survive them and i could easily see pyg believing that his dolls are being reborn into a perfect form.

Professor Pyg is probably my favorite DC Comics villain. Tied with Bane. What I like about Pyg so much is that he has SO much potential to be an insanely messed up live action villain. Gotham was alright, and I haven’t seen much from Batwoman, but I think it could be like The Batman’s Riddler, but worse and more messed up. To be done right, it would HAVE to be rated R. I’m excited for the Gotham Noir fan film, and I’m desperately hoping it gets funded, cause man, I need Pyg done right.
