Man, you are good at these video tutorials. Your clear matter of fact direction and excellent video lighting and perspective makes each one of these projects a no brainer. Only had to make two trips to the auto parts store this time: one for the wheel puller, and one to buy a spare 5.5mm that I could grind down. Everything else went perfectly. THANK YOU. This video easily saved me $250 in mechanic shop parts and labor.

Tim VanBergen I am glad you could grind a 5.5mm socket down.I have one in my toolbox just like that.

richpin06a Its almost as if the engineers at Saturn either overlooked the necessity of future repairs and molded in a super small deep hole, or they did that as the key to keep people from mucking around with the steering column and controls. Boy, I'll tell you what. I sure did handle that air bag gently. I could just imagine that thing blowing up in my face.

@dleeret no bigy it just has to be recentered.Rotate the center hub clockwise all the way til it stops then rotate it counterclockwise all the way till it stops counting the turns as you go.Now turn it back clockwise half the turns you counted and now your coil is centered.

Thanks for the detailed vid's. You do a great service to the remaining saturn owners. Do you just go to the junkyard to do videos or are you actually fixing these parts? I go every now and then to explore other saturns just to see what they look like inside or get an idea of how difficult something is on my actual car.

I just used your video ti change out my switch! Great video. I would suggest using a nut driver to remove the deep set cover screws and the screws for the switch. Much easier. Your video was spot on! Great Job. Piece of cake after watching you!

Why do we need to disconnect the fuse as we disconnected the battery already? And @ 2:45 you mention special grounded out 5.5mm socket. Did someone grounded out that socket or you can by that type of socket? Can you substitute it with just deep socket? Thank you for the film.

I replaced mine last year thanks to this video. Everything went smooth except for one thing. After the repair my windshield washer now sprays constantly. Did I get a bad switch? I had to disconnect the plug at the washer bottle. The reason I replaced the switch is my wipers would intermittently turn on.

@Richpin06a One thing I would add is that anyone trying to pull off a steering wheel like you did should have the nut on a few threads first ! I lost a front tooth doing something similar with a gearbox casing.

Thanks for the tutorial on multi switch removal, now I know my switch is bad since the wipers are always on when I start the car...a 1997 Saturn Sl1. What is the red switch on the right side of drivers kick panel?
@StanDrumz7 жыл бұрын
That used to happen to my 1997 SW2. Turned out to be an issue with the control board on the wiper motor itself; replacing the motor solved the problem. Not trying to steal his thunder, but richpin has an excellent video on diagnosing the windshield washer system (which of course activates the wiper system), that maybe might also prove useful. It certainly helped me out. kzbin.info/www/bejne/nYPWgJich6mUp9U&list=LLzUCI-TYmXbMW3xuuC63izQ&index=12

what is the best way to determine if problem is wiper motor or multi switch? First, my washer pump stopped working so i thought it was the pump but before i could make sure i started to get ghost wipers. i.e. the wiper would come on and off a few times on their own. Then today the pump started working and the wipers went CRAZY on their own. i couldn't get the wipers or pump to stop. I had to pull the 25amp wiper fuse. Now because the pump is running full bore no matter what position the multi switch is in im thinking it has to be the multi switch? The wipers work but only on the fastest speed. massive multi switch fail???? Note its a 2000 Saturn SL2

You should remove the negative battery cable and the air bag fuse and wait at least 30 minutes before starting your work.

If the wipers are working good otherwise then it could be a park function problem of the motor.

You really need to include a diagnosis process in this video so people can tell if it IS the switches are bad or if it's REALLY something else causing the lights to not work right, I thought it was the switch so I bought a new one at $103 and spent the next 2 hours taking stuff apart to find out that it WASN"T the switch AFTER ALL, but a part located under the center column connected to my shifter that had gone bad. Not sure what the part is or what it does but I replaced it and ALL my lights WORKS LIKE NEW, W/ the old switches still in it. The part looks like a shock or strut with a wired connected to it, just under the shifter on the right hand side. I hope this help the next person. Thanks.

Try a 5.5mm nut driver instead of a socket. Also realize that the connector on the clock spring does not remove and that is why you are disconnecting further upstream.

Hey rich, do I need to wait a half hour after removing the fuse and disconnecting the battery before I start to take it apart? thanks.

I could only find one repair manual that stated a time.It stated a minimal of 10 minutes after disconnecting the battery before working on system.
@popughomer647 жыл бұрын
Thanks rich i waited the half hour, your video was very helpful as always.
@StanDrumz7 жыл бұрын
This is a guess, but if there is a capacitor anywhere in the system, or a risk of static electricity, the waiting period might be to allow any residual electricity to dissipate. Again, that is just a guess.

Not ever have explored how the activating circuit for a steering wheel airbag works, maybe there is a capacitor some place in the circuit that can hold a charge and set off the bag. Who knows?
