Only now (almost 9 years after original posting), I am watching this video - I somehow missed it earlier. Always wanted to make this type of rice so now I know how! Also, glad to see I am not the only person who opens bags and such from the bottom ;-) Thank you so much for your good instructions, Maangchi!

This is now one of my favorite rice dishes. I have it about once every two weeks. It is so special to me. Thank you for sharing this recipe with me. I am Hispanic but my best friend was married to a Japanese man so she made sushi rice (the short grain white) my children loved it and we would eat it almost everyday with whatever our meal was. They loved it with eggs in the morning too. One of their favorites. Later when I was working with a Thai man, he introduced me to Jasmine rice so I started making that more. My children to this day prefer the sushi rice but will eat the jasmine when I make it. They are grown now and still feed my grandchildren rice almost everyday. Now, I have a medium size canister of brown sweet rice and one of barley, and a 32 ounce mason jar with black rice on my counter sitting next to my two huge canister. Of sushi rice and jasmine rice. It looks so beautiful. I always bought the big 50 pound sushi rice when I was younger and just would refill my big canister as needed. Now I only buy the 25 pound of sushi rice and 25 pound of jasmine rice to keep my canisters well stocked at all times. So it looks very pretty with the added smaller canisters of assorted grains and rice. I only buy the small sizes of those because I don’t make it daily but I want you to know how special it is to me. As I am a rice lover. I have 10 grandchildren and we are all neighbors so I always have rice ready for them at grammas house. oh and when I make Spanish rice, I use the jasmine. That is also very special to my grandchildren because I don’t make it too often unless we’re having Mexican food. I know this was a very long comment. I just want you to know how much I appreciate you. Rice is life 😊 I also make my own kimchi now going on one year. I always bought it from the store and my sons love it but now that I make my own we all love it so much more than store bought😊👍

Hi Maangchi. A very nice video, and clear instructions. So authentic too. In Australia, I mix brown, red, and black rice. I cook it in pressure cooker for 15 minutes and let it rest for 5-10 minutes. I sometimes cook extra and freeze, then microwave when I want it in a hurry. I have never thought to add barley but that is a good idea. Thanks again. p.s. the science says black rice is the healthiest of all the rices. It has the most anthocyanins, which are the chemicals that give plants color. These are phytonutrients that have many anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant properties....so we should all eat these more than white rice bye.

I think I know why they asked you about the normal rice. In Malaysia, we also didnt use multi short grain rice and the rice texture are not sticky like your rice. If I wanted to make kimbap or sushi, I have to find short grain rice usually in 'sushi rice' packaging and its quite pricey compared to our rice. If I use our rice, the rice roll will not look good and it will hard to be rolled. Just for your information, maangchi ☺

Amazing and simple recipe! I went to my local Korean grocery store and showed the lady the video so I can buy the brow sweet and black rice. I just made this and its amazing with some kimchi. I will say one thing I realized while watching the lunch spread. The biggest difference I see between European and Western food is we don't eat nearly as much seafood. When I was growing we would have fish only rarely, and never fish sauce or anchovies. As an adult I embraced all styles of food, especially Korean however I do not eat very much seafood and usually leave it out of recipes. Just some thoughts... Thank You Maangchi!!!
