I haven't been in Korea since 1983. This brought back the sights and sounds and smells of the market. And the conversations with the vendors were so familiar. Even with shopping at Korean stores here in the USA, I still have not had a really good persimmon since back then.
@knightsofneeech29 күн бұрын
But were they taking advantage of her with the price?
@GradyGillis28 күн бұрын
@@knightsofneeech I thought I answered this and then realized that I was way out of line on the prices. When I was there in 82-83, 1000 Won was about USD $1.45 to $1.50. A 100 Won bus fare was 15 cents. I just checked and the conversion rate is half of that. Today, 1000 Won is $0.72. Even at the higher exchange rate I remember, what I heard seemed very reasonable. Cheap in a couple of cases. But I don't know the current pricing of things. It's only been 42 years! Also, it definitely depends on who is buying and how they interact with the folks in the market. I recall walking up to an older lady who was selling those awesome Asian pears. Four very young men were ahead of me. Like me, they were USAF assigned to Osan Air Base in Songtan-si, south of Seoul. Difference between us was that these guys were young and totally lacking in manners. Apparently, they thought pidgin English would be how to talk to her. "How muchee thos-ee?" Made me cringe. She told them they were 400 won each and they all bought a few. Good for her. They got boned and that's what they earned for being rude. I moved up for my turn. I made the slight bow of greeting and (in Korean) said, "Grandmother, hello (in most respectful form). Those apples, how much are they?" She smiled and bowed back and the rest of the conversation was in Korean. I paid 400 won for four of them as opposed to the price for idiots of 400 won, each.
@제정은-f7j26 күн бұрын
@@knightsofneeechGwangjang Market is yet another part of Seoul that has become more and more gentrified over the past few decades. Yes, the prices will be higher than you expect. But some of the snacks or food you will not find easily in the local supermarkets. I usually go there to buy the snacks, purchase bindaetteok batter (even the batter isn't what it tasted like a few years ago, it's become meat-free and less spicy) or take my foreign friends over to have a Koream meal of their choice.

Hi Maangchi! Do you ever visit Florida? I live on the southeast coast and I can't think of anything I would be more excited about or enjoy more than attending a meet up and getting to meet you! I have followed you for so many years! You are the sole reason that I discovered and learned to cook and absolutely love Korean food! And you lit a desire in me to visit Korea! One day! And I am convinced that having eaten an abundance of Korean chili, gochugaru and gochujang , along with lots of Korean vegetables and ingredients, that this helped to fight my battle with cancer! I really do think that that has contributed to my not having more recurrences! Please let us know if you ever plan to visit Florida. And thank you for all your wonderful videos. ❤
