My Timneh came to me as a plucker. Sometimes he would look pretty good. At the time I had him there really weren’t avian vets. Plus it was a time that birds were fed primarily seeds. I had a vet that was interested in birds. She really tried to help. She had me try everything from steroids to tranquilizers. The only thing I found that helped a bit was a powder from Australia. The Australians were studying it on cockatoos. It worked for a short while. Even the Australians stopped using it. I have heard, as you mentioned, if the behavior goes on the bird develops the habit and actually begins to produce soothing endorphins. Luckily my bird never progressed to the stage of self mutilation. 😊

With my African Grey and Ecclectus it was a variety of things. I first made sure they had bird safe lights 10-12 hours a day. Then diet, along with safe daily out of cage time. Finally in Colorado, we have such dry air and using a fine mister and running a humidifier is also very helpful. Hope this helps!

Our timneh doesn't pluck (much?)...he's 20+ now and during molting season, there is a thin spot on his chest...when he's wet, it's a little bare....he's bare under his wings (where the wing attaches to the body (on the body) but I don't think it is from plucking and wonder why it is like that...if anyone knows? Maybe diet?...we try to feed him a good diet, but he's a pretty picky eater, but we still try....one of the things we've always done which is probably good for his feathers and not plucking is that if he wants a "bath" / "shower", he'll hop up on the water facet in the kitchen and we'll turn the water on for him and he sits on the divider in the sink and splashes in the running water, whenever he wants, which seems to be every few days...we let him tell us when it's time, and he always does.

My first Lovebird cut her Tongue almost the whole way through. It took months to heal. I have no idea what it would have been. Thru like to run their tongues over their environment. Bells can be dangerous. I try to remove bells. Sometimes the bells get rusty. That is a real good reason to get them gone. Not all toys are safe. Thank You for your Help deis Kaylan, I hope I have your name right. You have a lot of birds. How do you find time to spend with them. You have other pets too. A mini Zoo. How do the birds do outside in the sun? I wanted to invent a sunglass or visit for my bird if we go outside. I even thought of a stand, mini perch to put on my shoulder with an umbrella to safeguard my birds eyes. They can be delicate.

So I’m really into Amazon parrots, I’ve been doing my research on amazons for almost 2 whole years now. But Im curious about something and I want to ask someone who has both species in curious about. Would you say the yellow naped amazons is less or more demanding and challenging than a Mexican red crowned amazon?

If you decide to make a video about this describing the differences between the 2 species, like the video of Linnie’s and cockatiels I would be very exited for it!
