Multiplier Bearings - Episode 1 of 2: Degreasing and Lubricating Stock Bearings

Disclaimers: I am not suggesting you do this modification (or any modification) as doing so will most likely void your warranty.
I am not an expert on this matter, I just want to share the results that I have gotten from my little experiment/s.
Not all multipliers have bearings on their spools.
Also, a flick of the thumb to make the spool spin is not an accurate method of testing bearings, it does give you an idea of how it performs.
Here I show the difference in performance of the stock bearings of the Akios Nitron F15 reel - before degreasing & after, and with lubrication.
However, the principle should be the same with any other multipliers with bearings on their spool.

Hi, thanks for your interesting video on bearings. Will this method also work on sealed bearings in penn spinning reels?

Hi Leon. The method for cleaning the bearings should work with most bearings. If the bearings are sealed, you might have to take those seals off in order for the lighter fluid to get into the actual bearings. However, i do not think it would make a difference for spinning reels. It might make the reel feel smoother when reeling in, but it might not be a noticeable difference.

How long do you soak in the lighter fluid

Hi Shaun. It depends. I find 20-30 minutes (with frequent swirling) is sufficient for the bearings I have come across with. Let it dry thoroughly and try to spin in. You can usually tell the grease have been removed if it makes more noise after you have soaked and dried the bearings thoroughly. I hope this helps. 👍

Getting 24 secs with mags fully off and spool full of line that sounds about right

That does sound right. I stuck with the stock bearings in the end as I find the ABEC7 & ABEC9 bearings hard to control - specially if I lose sight of the lead and bait when the sun is shining right on my face when casting. 🤣

@@x3mgrifter yeah going to order some 7s and try them with thicker oil like red rocket fuel and compare I've never took a reel apart before tbh so was new to me now got the bug to start trying to repair some going to try find a few knackered ones and try get them working

Rocket oil must be reoiled often. It's really thin , but not that durable.
