Michael drove his car into the lake to PROVE his point that technology is stupid (the GPS telling them to turn)... He was distraught over losing potential customers thanks to technology. He was actively trying to undermine it. Makes PERFECT sense (for Michael's character)!

Fun Fact: Garbage, the cat that Dwight brought in for Angela, is the same cat that Andy finds for her. Andy says that he found it in Vance Refrigeration, and in this episode, after Angela rejects Dwight's offer, he puts garbage in the Vance Refrigeration part of the building. So basically, Angela accepted the cat that Dwight offered. also bloody nipple andy is at 10:03

I always thought the car scene was malicious compliance on Michael's part since his whole stance in the episode is anti technology I thought it was his over dramatic way of proving that machines aren't always the best but maybe that's a reach idk

Are you kidding? Dunder Mifflin Infinity has one of the best cold opens in the series! You didn't even bring up the Jim and Pam reveal which makes this cold open so fantastic! Edit: the wiki does not actually acknowledge this as a cold open, but rather as part of the plot. So that might explain why it's so long.

Btw Michael drives his car into the lake on purpose because he’s at a breaking point in a world controlled by technology. Is it ridiculous and overkill? Yes, but that’s why it’s a breaking point.

They almost never let actors drive a car in a shot. Usually the car (or part of a car) is mounted on a trailer, side rig, etc. This makes it possible to have a professional driver focus on driving, the camera crew has room to put cameras and lights, and the actors can focus on acting instead of driving. Were I planning this stunt, I'd put the cab of a car mounted to a front mounted platform on a large truck, the truck can then drive the cab into the lake without the actual vehicle going into the lake. The cab can be sealed on the front and bottom so they can pull it back out and have a second take if desired. Then use a stripped shell of a car for the shots where you can see the car actually in the water.

I interpret Michael driving his car into the lake as him giving up. He’s accepted that technology is superior and that he should follow it blindly. And so, when it directs him to drive into a lake, he takes its advice and does so blindly. After seeing the mistake, Michael takes this to mean that technology isn’t necessarily always right. And so his original stance is strengthened more than ever

As someone who works in insurance, specifically for the big red one, I can confirm your regular insurance extends over and you don’t have to get their insurance. This of course assumes that your regular insurance has comprehensive and collision cause you may want that coverage on a rental and the rental company can force you to carry it.

Jenna Fischer revealed on her The Office Ladies that the car scene was done through (obviously taking all the parts out lol) but then the car was put onto a track, and from what she described it was a completely unnoticeable split second change, where they had a different shot of the car driving into the lake. That’s how they actually drove the car into the first place, and then the second shot was on a track and a basically useless car. :)

Actually no. Michael drove his car into a lake because he idolizes and loves Ryan so much and Ryan is obsessed with technology. Ryan believes that technology will save Dunder Mifflin, a company that Michael loves very much, and so he believes that the technology cannot be wrong because that would mean Ryan is wrong. That’s why Michael blindly follows the GPS into the lake

Also Phillis in my opinion is one of the biggest ashholes (get it?) of the series, I could never stand her, and I first I didn't know why really, but seeing others review the series and characters, i realise is because of little moments like that one with Jim and Pam, and there are a lot of those moments over the series.

Angela does the same thing to Pam as well and I always thought it was weird. At least in Angela's case it was clearly projection, but with Phyllis it was just a jerk move. (Which I guess was the point?)

I always took that GPS telling Michael to "drive into the lake" as not just a bit about him driving into a lake, but how sometimes the GPS makes zero sense when giving a direction. Sometimes it will say "turn left" when it means to kind of keep left at a small, insignificant fork, or like how you sometimes have to pay really close attention when there's a lot of streets together and it's telling you that in ".3 miles turn right." So while, overall, technological advances are VERY helpful, there's some instances where you can't trust them because they're just a machine with very specific instructions, but it's still up to the human being listening to interpret what it actually means.
@Bretkane7 ай бұрын
Michael's logic was confusing when driving in to the lake but here's how I see it He was defeated by the technology and was ready to accept new technology is better than everything else he knows. He believed there was some shortcut or something that he and Dwight didn't know. This explains his anger towards Ryan and Oscar upon returning to the office
@thebrideofghostface11 ай бұрын
Nah I totally believe Michael having a breakdown about technology and driving into a lake. As someone who is prone to breakdowns and also really struggles with using Maps as I just don't understand directions- I could totally see doing something close to that- or actually that if I were Michael Scott, a man who is known to have very little emotional regulation.

Not true about renter's insurance. Your collision coverage will only cover what your car is worth so it really depends on what you rent and what you own. Liability usually transfers over and some credit cards provide some coverages. You should check with your insurance and credit card companies before hand to be sure. Debit card do not provide coverage.
