If they are up to the job they will keep the boat warmer ...like in an inner tent in a frame tent. These days they even make make insulated and dark inners for tents used in cold weather .. 24 hr artic light. Some no see um mesh for any hatches will keep the little biters out while at anchor. 🦟🦟 are spreading into Northern Europe.. and the Med already has the problem. And Scotland its massed Midges 😬

Marc, I would really strongly encourage you to take another look at the engineering of those engine sleds. Not only have you got the entire thrust to move a large boat moving through two small bolts, those will be subjected to a lot of torsion in multiple dimensions, but particularly yaw, which is the rotation seen from the top. this is going to happen, because the boat does not simply move forward in the water. but is subject to a number of forces, including lifting, and dropping that will not be symmetrical. Once the thrust of an engine is misaligned with the centreline of the sled, those connection points look completely inadequate to absorb the force. It doesn’t really matter that those are low horsepower engines relatively speaking. It’s the mass of the boat that will be the factor and the amount of power that the waves around it can exert. The bolts themselves, cells, moving against a plywood hole are going to wear that hole away very quickly, and the more worn becomes the more movement there will be in the sled alignment which will tend to make this misalignment worse and worse. At the very minimum you need some kind of large diameter bushing that sits between the wooden walls of the sleds and the bolts themselves. But done properly, you would have some form of blind bolt with No threads which won’t act as a kind of rasp or file against the wood. Another point is it those bolts are attached without any locknut, Loctite or peening over of the threads to prevent them from loosening up, or a lock nut, or all of these. Given the vibrational forces, it is guaranteed those will loosen up quickly and you will either lose engine or lose one side of the sled causing chaos.

He done them already though... Here my thought: They could be upgraded reinforcing the ends (where the engine is clamped and the box hinged) by doubling the thickness and or using angular metal brackets but most substantially reinforcing and encapsulating all with fiber glass, embedding a large extra strong stripe to hold and hoist them up. Anyway just DO secure your engines with a lifeline to the beam itself !

The square tubing is going to crush over time and the "clamps" will get loose. Put some spacers around the threaded rod inside the sq tubing! Probably want some tubing to protect the main beams from the threads. Great work!

@@WildlingSailing Of course you and your dad are not completely satisfied with this solution (we could hear and see this). Please kindly allow me to suggest something: Weld rectangle or square tubing to one side of the construction and strengthen it with triangular pieces of stainless steel. Although the bolts might still go through it, the load will be much better distributed on the beam. And the now U- shaped clamp will be much stronger. I suggest all this although I'm pretty sure that you too already thought similar. 2) Although I usually love over engineered constructions, I would use ropes instead of going with wire for the other side of the outboard motor holders. For instance Dayneema. To protect the rope from rubbing on the beam, you could maybe use neoprene rubber (glued on)? So there would be no need to drill into the beams. Your parents are amazing, i know you appreciate them but if its all you've known you wont realise how amazingly lucky you are. It is incredibly rare to have parents that provide so much help, support and fun. Well done mum and dad!! My advice on the engines is treat yourself and buy new. You will have them a long time and the confidence you will have in their reliability and knowing only you have maintained them to a high standard is worth the money. If you splash out on nothing else i would say the engines are it. Love the channel, keep living the dream!

I would go for two new engines. You have the warranty of course, but also you will put them both on equal strain. They will have the same amount of running hours, so you will know the full history. With secondhand engines you can never be sure about the strain they where put on, and the amount of running hours will be a guest for you. The choice for Yamaha is a very good one though! Love the vids, so I'm looking forward to the next one! Cheers!

Good idea ...put a piece of SS tubing inside the square tubing mounts with washers inside to a tight fit to keep from crushin square tubing. Good job on the mounts.

It’s the best way to go, the engines. That is one thing not to mess with. Good choice on those IMAO. It’s worth the extra for new ones, still want to give them a good test and have something reliable stowed in case one dies at an inappropriate time is a thought comes to mind. Gotta love you're Mum & Dad..!! Mum says, "...In all my 33 years (I've been 33 years old for a long time now)..." Another classic Mary Quote. They are true gems, eh?? Have you thought about lock nuts on the front engine support clamps? They are subject to a lot of vibration and pounding, and I'd hate to see them come loose. But they are a work of art and very functional. You'll be so glad of the shape when servicing/repairing the engines, and you drop your 10mm socket only to find it lands in the safety of the box..!! If wharram taught me anything through his design it was the strength of lashing. As synthetic fiber advances year over year i am more amazed by rope, knots, how to tie and create them and why. So, glass some stop blocks to the beam and use line to tie in and hoist the motors. Nothing wrong with your clamps. Id use a solid piece of rod and thread it to ensure that i have solid shoulders in the tube steel. Most aluminium masts are made that way then we load those bolts down with some 7000 lbs and no one says anything. But the threads in thread rod are indeed the weak link. Not the steel. If you have bolts turned you can have them drill through the threads for a cotter pin that'll double your safety if the nut starts walking. Dont forget your antisieze or tefgel. Those be some expensive bolts. You can glass plate steel in to spread the load as well. Just smack it on with some 404 then glass around it a bit. Its just holding on a plate. Angle iron on the bottom would be a good idea to as thats where itll push. Or dont do that at all and go sailing and do somthing about that later. I wouldn't fault you at all.

The boat is coming along great looks like mom and dad are putting you over the top of getting your projects finished. Tip, if you are Caulking something, get yourself a warm to hot wet towel/ rag and where you want to remove excess, just water your finger (no gloves, just your finger) and with your wet finger wipe away the excess. When you get alot on your finger wipe it off on the towel/ rag it will come right off your finger. Wet your finger again and start wiping. As long as your finger is wet the Caulking will come right off. You can even use the warm wet towel/ rag to wipe things and the Caulking comes up. Wet finger leaves a nice finish look. Food for thought

If you are eyeballing used engines you should have a compression test done on each. That way you know the state of health of each engine before you buy it. Maybe the seller also kept maintenance logbooks? Those are also very much worth checking. I think most Dutch outboard engines will have been used in sweet water so that i think is a good thing.

Thanks for another great video. I use a rope and pulley set up on my yacht motor, I use 10mm dyneema( no stretch and stronger than steel) . This way you wouldn’t have to drill cross beam, just tie rope and pulley set up .
