This movie is still my go-to whenever I'm depressed. It's aged so well, none of the jokes are cringy or unfunny. It's just that kind of movie you can watch with your kids and grandkids in the future and it'll still be funny. Especially for hindi speaking audience and Mumbaikars who understand the nuances better than anyone.

One thing to note - The fear/respect you see in Sanjay Dutt's eyes in this movie in scenes with his father (Sunil Dutt) are as close to real-life as you can get. You guys were spot on about the father-son thing. The legendary late Sunil Dutt is indeed Sanjay Dutt's father. Not only was Sunilji an amazing actor, he was also one of the best human beings to ever exist. An amazing father and an even more amazing husband. His love story with his wife started on set when he saved her from a fire that went out of control. He even got badly burnt in it. SRK and Deepika paid tribute to that in a scene from Om Shanti Om when Shanti gets stuck in the middle of burning hay and Om jumps in to save her. You should also check out Sunil ji's work in Padosan (a comedy) and Mother India (one of the greatest movies ever made). You'll get a gist of his amazing talent.

This movie was a trendsetter in many ways! First movie of Boman Irani, who made his debut at the age of 44. He is exactly same age as Sanjay Dutt (both born in 1959). Since then Boman has acted in all movies directed by Raju Hirani. You spotted Nawazuddin correctly. This was one of the three minor roles he played - the other two being, Sarfarosh (one scene with Aamir) and Shool (one scene with Manoj Vajpayee). Sanjay Dutt's father in this movie is his real father. He passed away soon after that movie. It was his last movie and he acted in this movie after a long gap. The real life context of this movie is also interesting. Sanjay Dutt has been a controversial figure in real life. He was jailed in 90's and spent one 1 year in jail. In 2000, he got his first Best Actor award for a role of a gangster (movie Vaastav), which coincided with his real life image. This movie shows him as a gangster with a big heart. This movie helped him a lot in his image makeover. Sanjay Dutt was not the first choice for this movie. I think SRK and Anil Kapoor had rejected this role. But Sanjay turned out to be very good fit for this role. Sanjay Dutt also featured in PK in a small role. And Hirani made a biopic on his life - Sanju where Ranbir played Sanjay Dutt's character and excelled in that role! This is director Rajkumar Hirani's first movie. He has been a long time friend and associate of Vidhu Vinod Chopra as an Editor and had directed some of the best TV ads. Vidhu Vinod Chopra produced this movie and gave him break as a Director and the duo followed up with Lage Raho Munna Bhai and 3 Idiots and PK and Sanju. You couldn't recognise heroine of this movie. She is Gracy Singh, who you saw in Lagnaan, with Aamir Khan (the village girl). The dialogues of this movie became cult and spawned many memes. The language is typical slang Hindi spoken in Mumbai (called Tapori - or loafer's language). You would enjoy movie much more if you could understand the dialect and Hindi dialogues which are much more funny in local language. The Circuit character played by Arshad Warsi became huge hit! Arshad has tremendous comic timing and has always played such roles really well. There was a plan to make next Munna Bhai movie as "Munna Bhai goes to America", but for some reason it got shelved. I don't think it'll happen now, given Sanjay Dutt's age. Lastly, the movie was remade into all southern languages where the local industry veterans played this character. For example, Kamala Hassan (Tamil), Cheeranjivi (Telugu), Mohanlal (Malyalam) played the local version. Forgot who did the Kannada version. You should watch Lage Raho Munnai Bhai next and then Sanju.

Fun fact: That is actually Sanjay Dutt's Father IRL. He insisted Sanjay to do this movie, when Sanjay was going through his drug-addiction phase, to get out from this. Also, right after this movie, Sanjay's father passed away. As he was ill during shooting of this movie. You could see he couldn't raise his hands very easily in the movie. The language they are using in the film is "Tapori". It's a style of Hindi used around Bombay, typically by Gangesters, which has it's roots in the Dakhni language of Hyderabad. It uses short phrases and simple words often combining English with Hindi. For example : "Aeda" for "Pagal"(crazy) "Mamu"(mom's brother) for Mr. and so on Even the main 2 character's names are short Tapori abbreviations 'Munna' for 'Murli Prashad Sharma' 'Circuit' for 'Sarkeshwar' 😂 This is what makes the dialogues 10 times funnier to those who know Hindi.

And of course we were introduced to boman irani..I m not sure if it's his first movie or not but this was the one that got him instant recognition..And then of course we got the sunil dutt and sanjay dutt combo.. And yes the nawaz cameo.. But sadly we didn't know him back then.. But yeah it can't be fully enjoyed without understanding the lingo.. Bhidu, bole toh,jadu ki jhappi ,ae mamu and all those terminologies.. And the singer from three idiots "all is well" and "subah ho gayi mamu" is same..its shaan.. One of the best singers we have..

I love this movie! While the entire cast is very good, Sanjay Dutt is top notch. Along with Vaastav this is one of his all time best peformances. Also Arshad Warsi stars in the character of Circuit. He was excellent in that role.

Munna bhai MBBS is the first part of the trilogy of Munna bhai Series by Rajkumar Hirani. Next part is "Lagey raho Munna Bhai" starring Sanjay Dutt, Arshad Varshi as circuit, Boman Irani,Vidya Balan & surprise is it also stars Mahatma Gandhi in a very important role. The third part of the trilogy initially had the same star cast but could not take off since Sanjay dutt was in jail so the story was rewritten keeping in mind the new Star cast but is end part of the trilogy " 3 idiots " starring Amir Khan, Madhavan, Boman Irani. All three are part of the Munnabhai trilogy and important aspect all three where mega block buster cult classic hits. My personnel liking of the three parts though I loved all three parts is the 2nd part of the trilogy " Lagey Raho Munna Bhai " on the top.
