The Rivian can be appreciated by the consumer and an engineer... Nice to see some cutting edge suspension parts on an American automobile... American consumers seem to care more about cup holders and heated seats than the parts that move or stop the automobiles. Thank you Tesla and Rivian for excellent engineering..... I think they are confusing casting lines for forging lines. Sand casting is often used for low production quantity especially for aluminum parts where various material states set in place by specific heating and processing tend to be more of a temporary state for forming/welding/shaping of the aluminum. Steel is drop forged to gain specific hardness and durability properties, which is preferable for wear surfaces. Aluminum is great for structure due to weight and ability to absorb and relax from vibration and impact (though it has limits and can microfracture). The crux is this, you can cast huge parts. Forging requires significant machinery usually 10+ times the size of the forged item to create so there are limitations to forging.

I was thinking the same thing. First thing I said was “wait those are casting marks”

Please bring the Rivian R1S to Europe, it's short enough to fit into Europe and has massive space and it looks awesome and seems to be a great alternative (wait there is none - haha) Maybe consider rear axle steering (but the packaging won't let it happen I think) And keep GVWR under 3500kg (i looked up and it should comply with that number) so we can drive it with standard driving license B in Europe And bring normal towing at least up to 2500kg and 150kg tongue weight without using weight distribution hitches! Tilt of the wheel depends on the length difference of upper and lower control arms, not their length. Trailing arm geometry is very interesting - you would want these arms to be as long as possible for an off-roader, and as horizontal as possible. Now, every bump tries to move the wheel down, thus increasing perceived bump. And suspension compression moves front wheel to front - that restricts tire size, and tire rubbing when off-roading.

The nice thing about big brake calipers, is that you only need brakes every 50,000 miles. Instead of the 25,000 the so many high dollar and market brands now get, from cutting corners.
@thebros2866 Жыл бұрын
The fact that it is electric means folks will hardly use their brakes. Some Tesla owners were reporteing their pads sticking to the caliper since they wouldn't use their brakes at all. You would see the pad and rotor rusting away and maybe even seized up.

@Alan May Regardless for $100k, I don't think everyone will be taking it off-road. Not to mention Sandy Munro's team commented that air suspension reliability is questionable in this application. The vehicle got you into whatever situation off-road that only air suspension can only get you out of and if one corner gives out you might end up with an expensive tow. For all that said, I don't believe many will take them on as extreme adventures as advertised.

This is an amazing suspension but it has one major (IMHO) flaw: there are no bump stops. If you bottom the suspension even at a very low speed it can break the damper. (I have the pictures. 😂). 5:30 Tesla Model X definitely suffers from suspension travel with the air suspension in that if you set it to very low to get better efficiency, you will have extreme uneven wear on the inner tread of your tires
@pting6611 ай бұрын
Its because the change in ride height changes the geometry of the camber and toe. Pretty much all cars with long adjustable travel will have this problem. If you drive around mostly in a lowered ride height, you’re better off getting a realignment done at the height if tire wear is getting too uneven or replacing them prematurely
