Oh, and here's the real reason why the Id4 software is so bad/counterintuitive from someone who still activley works on UI: It's designing UI by committee. Everyone thinks they're an UI expert and you get the most ridiculous demands from people in management because 'they think they know' (which you cannot fend off). Couple that with people in finance putting the slowest possible chip and the smalles possible screen in there "because it saves 5$"...and at the end of the day that's what you get: A slow-as-molasses UI that's beyond hope of ever getting fixed. Today I wouldn't buy either company's EVs. They're both too expensive for my limited vehicle use. But I haven't seen ANY new ICE or hybrid that has a TCO and ease of maintenance and operation close to that of my 2008 Honda Element. @@NO3V HUD is fully configurable - brightness, rotation and even "snow mode". You just need to know where the option is to configure it properly - it is the same tech as in the new Merc S Class. AR works with both Android and Apple but only with certain apps - works in Apple Maps for instance but not Google Maps. Model Y roof rack system is a pain in the ass to put on and can cause cracks in the glass if over torqued (happens all the time). Tow bar is so difficult to put on the Y that most people just leave it on all the time, on the ID4 it is electric - just press a button. I test drove a Model 3 for a weekend last year, the rear brake light was filled with water. I asked the Tesla guy what the story was, his answer "Ah, thats common, most of them leak but don't worry when you buy one we will fix it for you". Range? For the ID.4 1st Max, the WLTP is around 302 miles (480 km) from a 77 kWh battery, check out that EVSpecifications comparison, the (cancelled) Model Y Long Range RWD _would have had_ an even better range with _possibly_ a slightly smaller battery (75 kWh), *but it would have cost at least $10,000 more!* Er, storage space on the ID.4 definitely isn’t an issue. As Bjørn’s banana box test shows, the ID.4 is in third place (trunk: 9, seats down: 25 boxes), just behind the Tesla Model X 5 seater (trunk: 10+1, seats down: 28 boxes). kzbin.info/www/bejne/bn-nmqCmo7d0hZY shmadmanuts, _snap!_ So we’re left with VW’s UI, something that can and will be fixed. To follow up on some of his thoughts.. --Range - 250mi EPA rated range for a ~$37k EV after the fed incentive is a decent price/mi, but it still only barely beats out a SR+ Model 3 by about $500. --Performance - "Oh, I'm not a performance guy" That's fair, but it's still notable that they don't have performance numbers that come close to competing with the 3/Y. --Charging - "It's free charging for 3 years, that's big for me" Ok, and as Sandy said their charging infrastructure is significantly inferior to the Supercharging Network at best right now. If you drive LA->LV (269mi) once a week & Supercharge that's $14.74/week in charging (269*250/1000*0.22) or $60/month. Not nothing, but people forget electricity is relatively cheap. --Infotainment - "It's VWs first try, lets give them a year" Really? They've been making cars with touch infotainment systems for well over a decade. Another year isn't enough time to fundamentally redo how they approach their hardware and software inefficiencies. And this isn't something that can be fixed in a software update. I think it's pretty clear that VW (and Ford for that matter) are not software companies and they didn't spend nearly enough R&D time/dollars on software in the development of these vehicles. --Space/storage - "I don't need the space" Doesn't excuse the car not having the same storage potential as a Model 3/Y. The entire design/MEB platform still shouts "ICE manufacturer" with the lack of a frunk & sub trunk cargo area. If the car doesn't have a gas tank or muffler, what else is that area being used for? It's inefficient use of space and I look forward to (hopefully) seeing Sandy's teardown. Also, "deep yogurt" 😂

really that's what you think? The VW interface of finding their own Electrify America charger network is non-existant, the I.D. 4 can't even find it's way out of the parking lot with their navigation software being so innovative to use. Other reviewers Jason from "Engineering Explained" did a recent VW I.D. 4 review and came to the exact same conclusions as Sandy. Weird isn't it? Trying to tell anyone that this is VW's first attempt at an EV.. I claim B.S. they have made other EV's, what about the E-Golf, the E-UP, the VW I.D. 3? Are those works of fiction? Maybe their drawing from the wrong source code? They should possibly stick to the software they know.. How to cheat on Diesel Emissions maybe..

Sandy’s biggest problem with the ID.4 is that he never hit the home button and for whatever reason, it seemed he didn’t grasp what screen he was on. Tesla’s charging status screen also doesn’t list superchargers. It has various settings for setting predetermined departure times, charge limits, etc. but nothing more. The VW went one further and offered the ability to add charging stations to the car’s memory that don’t appear on a map. It lets you add a home charging station or a friend’s charging station and that is where Sandy got stuck. I’m sure if he had spent a few minutes flipping through the quick start guide he would have known what to do, but that didn’t happen. There are a lot of things in the Tesla that are hidden like the trip computer, TPMS, how to open the glovebox, adjust steering wheel and mirrors, even opening the door (especially if the power fails), HVAC adjustments aren’t necessarily straightforward if you don’t know what to do, etc. We own 4 Teslas in our household, so I’m not saying these things to be anti-Tesla, I’m just saying them because I think Sandy’s representation of the ID.4 UI was a bit unfair. Now, for things I don’t like about ID.4: I use my frunk almost every time I go to the grocery store because both of our Model 3s have the grocery hooks. On the Y, I don’t ever use the frunk except maybe to put a small suitcase in because groceries will go sliding around without being hooked in place. I wish the ID.4 had a frunk, but more importantly I wish it had the little hooks for grocery bags. Tesla also needs to add those back on. They add a ton to the frunk’s usefulness. 2. Power - 201HP is really on the low end for a vehicle of that size, at least in my opinion. The 302HP AWD (GTX) version will be slightly faster, but still it’s going to offer acceleration probably on par with a SR+ 3 at best. I want a hot ID.4 with over 450HP. 3. Colors - I want more interior and exterior colors. I want a beige option, not just black or gray, and I also want some other dash trim material options. 4. The main infotainment screen looks a little small 5. I’m really mad that VW of America is not offering the 360° surround camera system OR the augmented reality heads up display on N. American ID.4, but everywhere else it will be offered. For $50,000 for a loaded ID.4, those two things should be included, at least as options. I don’t understand why VW continues to de-content US models. 6. Adaptive Damping - this should be available on higher trim levels considering the price 7. We need the ID.6 (3-row version) 8. Faster DC charging - I wish they’d adopted an 800V architecture like Hyundai/Kia is doing with the Ioniq 5/EV6 to enable sub-20 minute 80% chargers. Maybe a future update will bump up peak speeds to 175-200kW… 9. Electrify America has got to fill gaps along major interstate highways and highly traveled tourist destinations (think coastal regions of the south and mid-Atlantic like VA Beach; NC Outer Banks; Wilmington, NC; Myrtle Beach, SC; etc. THINGS I LIKE ABOUT THE ID.4 BETTER THAN THE TESLA: 1. Real Radar-based BLINDSPOT MONITORING that works in all weather conditions, unlike Tesla’s unreliable and almost useless camera system 2. Cross traffic detection 3. Better ride quality and lower noise levels 4. Much better styling on the exterior than a Model Y 5. Dealer network means you can go many more places and be within 25 miles of a dealer, whereas Tesla’s service centers are few and far between, sometimes in excess of 500 miles from certain locations. 6. Driver information display in front of the steering wheel 7. CarPlay and Android Auto 8. Entry level price 9. Federal Tax credit still applies 10. 3 years of free DC fast charging 11 RAIN SENSOR - anyone that has had the unfortunate experience to use Tesla’s “auto wipers” on any Model 3/Y or recent S/X will know that Tesla’s camera-based rain sensor is garbage. The ID.4 uses the gold old infrared rain sensor that every other car in the world uses (because it works).

Right. There's a problem if you don't start on the home screen. There's another problem if the home icon is not recognizable--as it wasn't for Sandy. I'm almost as old as Sandy and I worked on user interfaces for computers for 30 years. I still prefer Windows UI to any cell phone because the controls are recognizable. When a windows standard was developed by Xerox at Parc, we copied it in our company. I had a cow when we got an Apple and it didn't follow the standard. The whole idea of hiding control buttons is hateful to me. Intuitive means ANYONE knows what to do from ANY screen. If you fail, you fail.
@CFG393 жыл бұрын
@@AndyZach there’s a learning curve for any new OS. I’m sure when Tesla sends out V11 of their UI to every car in the next couple of months there will be tons of people bitching about it being confusing and not knowing how to do things. That’s to be expected whenever you interact with any new system you’re unfamiliar with, however that’s why every new car (including Teslas) come with quick start guides that show you how to do basic things. If you want to talk about not being intuitive, go use a Lexus with their mouse pad controller, a Mercedes with their horrendous click wheel thing, a Volvo with their nightmare “Sensus” touchscreen, or the worst of all time is Acura’s newest “TrueTouchpad” system. I literally wanted to drive my friend’s new MDX into a brick wall because the touchpad you interact with doesn’t work like a trackpad. Instead you have to simulate on this tiny little pad where on the actual screen you intended to touch. It’s so awful I can’t even begin to describe it. kzbin.info/www/bejne/mJSukmyXpc-Cjpo

As a person who has been in the software design business for about 40 years, I enjoyed the back and forth between you and Alex. Having viewed your previous videos on the ID4, it was clear to me that the user interface is what is called a stovepipe design. Each group responsible for parts of the products designs making their own tradeoffs, but never talk to each other. This means that there is no overall coherent design, which is where you decide on the button, sliders and knobs and when done correctly prevents driving the user nuts. The person/group who gets the responsibility to put all of the pieces together, when their is not an overall design, has an impossible job and I am sure Alex has been in that position. I'm surprised nobody has actually explained why it doesn't come with a frunk. It's actually *because* it is built on a new platform that was designed to be EV only from the ground up. If you have a traditional looking car and you take out the engine, you end up with a lot of extra space under the hood, so naturally you put a frunk in there. But the ID.4 doesn't have that extra space because it was designed with a very short hood. It's much shorter than the hood of a Model 3 or Y. Why? Because it allows them to make the car smaller and also increase interior space. Additionally they also moved the chiller of the air condition unit forward (in regular cars it sits right behind the dashboard), this allowed them to free up even more space on the inside and make it even roomier. The ID.4 has actually more passenger space than the Model Y despite being 19 inches shorter. So it's not a bug that it doesn't have a frunk, it's a feature. You get a shorter, more nimble car with great packaging that offers much more interior space than any other car in this size segment. I'm honestly not sure why people would prefer a small compartment in the front instead of all of that.

Great conversation, gives a very balanced view! I bought an ID4 and I think it is awesome. In my view, the UI is simpler than Tesla, designed for people who have never owned an EV before. Definitely valid criticism on the lagginess menus etc.. I have also had problems with the navigation freezing but I’m sure all that will be sorted by software updates. The acceleration is decent, not Tesla melt your face fast but it isn’t slow either - more than enough for most situations. The best though is the space & the price. @17:00 VW opted to maximize the passenger space inside the vehicle, so they crammed _everything_ into the engine bay (including e.g. the air filters, that Sandy actually liked because they were so accessible). Bjorn Nyland did his banana box test and the ID.4 actually is very roomy inside (25 boxes with the rear seats folded down - so far only the Model X 5-seater could fit more boxes, namely 28). Of course it's a question of personal taste, if you prefer "external" storage like a frunk, but if you occasionally have to transport large items I'd actually prefer internal space - a frunk doesn't help with that at all.

I test drove a Tesla Model 3 and and VW ID.3 (Not the ID.4), I bought the VW for several reasons. 1) Small Hatchback format more practical in the small streets and parking spaces in the my city where I will drive it most of the time 2) I'm 190cm (6'2") and not the youngest anymore, I found it cumbersome to enter and especially exit the model 3. Once inside the model 3 felt cramped with very little headroom. On the other hand entering the ID.3 was easy to enter and exit and felt much more spacious, especially in headroom. Mind you the ID3 is 60cm /2 feet shorter than the model 3. 3) the infotainment system... yes, it's a smaller screen and it much slower but at least my old eyes could read it with my prescription sunglasses on, the small font and low contrast in the tesla makes it much less readable

I found this to be one of the most enlightening videos I've seen in some time. People's CHOICES are different and what one person likes, another detests. For instance, we own a 2021 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid which I was unable to test drive before purchase, although we did test drive another version of the 2021 Sonata to get some idea of the car. I watched several KZbin reviews of the Sonata Hybrid which were all very favourable. We'd also owned a 2009 Hyundai Sonata for 9 years which was an amazing vehicle for us so we went ahead and placed the order. I guess I would NOW say that the 2021 Sonata Hybrid is a pretty decent vehicle BUT not exactly what I was expecting. Virtually ALL of the reviews commented on how well the Sonata rides. Personally, I think it rides like a stone, especially around town. On the highway it's tolerable. I'd gladly trade off two notches of handling prowess for two notches of improvement in ride smoothness. I'm at a stage of life where I DON"T want to FEEL every little tar strip in the road and I have NO interest in cornering on the sidewalls of the tires. We had no such complaints with the ride OR handling in our previous Sonata. It was just a wonderful and reliable place to spend time on the road. And here's my take on the situation: The OEM car companies spend far too much time listening to Automotive Journalists, many of whom are frustrated "wanna-be" race car drivers. I'd have no such complaints IF I'd bought the Sonata N-Line as I would have expected a harsh ride. But come-on??? Hybrid Buyers purchasing a "Family Sedan" are NOT looking for some amazing performance vehicle. They're looking to get on with their lives while doing their part to help reduce environmental impact! On that front, the 2021 Sonata Hybrid delivers impressive fuel economy although not nearly as stellar as what the on-board "Guess-O-Meter" would lead you to believe. I know those gauges are optimistic on ALL vehicles but 10% - 15% consistent inaccuracy is just unacceptable, IMHO.
