Had a nest of those next to the area where we eat when we barbecue in summer a few years ago. They literally didn't give a fuck that we were right next to their nest, and not a single time did they become aggressive. Probably the most chill wasp species on the planet. We also couldn't get rid of them until winter, cause they're under nature protection here in Austria. So we had the nest removed once it was empty cause the workers died off, since only the queens go into a winter stasis. Also, I feel like that queen didn't have as much venom as regular workers. The reaction on your arm is hardly noticable, compared to other stings of European Hornets I've seen. Either way, I love all sting videos, so whatever you can get your hands on, I'd be interested in seeing.

@Niklo743 жыл бұрын
Here in Bavaria we have the European Hornets, too. Today they are protected in Germany. I often see them but they are normally relatively calm and not aggressive maybe similar like bumble bees. Only in the area of their nest they could get be aggressive. Here in Germany Hornets are very welcome as they hunt the more aggressice yellow jackets. With the European hornet in the garden you could eat cakes, pies, ice cream without beeing disturbed by wasps...
@Niklo743 жыл бұрын
In the German Wikipedia a sting by the European hornet (Vespa crapro) is on Schmidt sting index 2 (on another page between 2 and 3). That's similar to honey bees or yellow jackets. I guess it also depends how long the stinger sticks in and pumps venum into the *victim*. The bald faced hornet is in the English wiki on Schmidt sting pain index 2, too (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schmidt_sting_pain_index#Pain_Level_2 ). Personally I got stung only by honey bees and German yellow jackets (or similar wasps) so I have no experience with the stings of hornets because the European Hornets rarely stings....
@paulmerviel16172 жыл бұрын
In France at least, they're close to being an endangered species due to being outcompeted by the invasive Asian hornet (Vespa velutina), with which we have been having serious problems since about 2003. This species notoriously makes its nests close to homes, leading to dangerous encounters, and it's also decemating local bee populations.

I have to wonder if it’s really best to use queens for these sting tests... I think it’s possible that the lady hornets who go out and about have more potent venom, since they’ll be the most likely to come across threats. Queens are queens, and therefore are protected by the hive and perhaps don’t need such potent venom. Just something to consider. Regardless of that, thanks for your dedication! You come across as pretty honest and not flashy or showy. Love it.

Yesterday, I caught the first one I've ever seen of these on my window screen in October-chilly West Virginia. It's so large that as a layman I initially thought I'd found an Asian giant hornet. After researching I quickly identified its unique stripes as a European. I knew I could depend on you to deliver the sting goods! Likewise, I've been lit-up by yellow jackets and thought that due to its large size it would be far worse. Good to know it isn't. Afterward I released it on a log outdoors where it dropped off and took to burrowing underground instead. Thanks again, Jack. You're by far my favorite authority on insects. Hi, I am just watching this video today. I have a question. Do these wasps not eat and totally destroy bee colonies?
@keithm53783 жыл бұрын
I'm rather surprised this sting was as mild as it is. If nothing else? I figured due to the sheer size, the European hornets would have a higher venom yield, leading to a larger dose injected, and therefore causing more pain. But hey, thanks for doing the test! My father got stung by what we suspect to be a young European hornet at like 4:30 in the morning when he was going to work. The insect that he killed after being stung, after taking a look at it? I'm not sure if it was a young Crabro or a really, really big Vespula. But wasps aren't normally active at night, while European Hornets are famous for it. His reaction was somewhat similar, just a little worse. When he realized he'd been stung, he let out a string of profanity for about fifteen seconds (understandable! lol), said it burned like hell, he told me it was worse than the red paper wasps you see flying around here (Polistes Carolina). But what was interesting about his reaction? Is that he got really lightheaded, almost to the point of feeling like he was going to faint. But this subsided within about 10 minutes, it left a nasty welt on his shoulder that swelled up pretty good (the insect was in a shirt, a shirt he was putting on to go to work, ans he didn't realize there was a wasp/hornet in there and it nailed him near his shoulder..ouch!), no dramatic rolling around or any of that BS lol. You could always try out Polistes Major if you're feeling brave, another KZbinr I know took a sting from one and said it was really really unpleasant. If you're ever in Vietnam, Taiwan or Hong Kong (obviously, the latter is not really advisable to travel to right now!), There's an obscure, but extremely impressive and intimidating species of Polistes called Polistes Gigas, they are the largest species of Polistes in the world!, even exceeding P. Carnifex. The females can get up to 38mm in length, and their sting is reported to be excruciatingly painful. Oddly, the males get even bigger and can exceed 50mm in length! If that wasn't enough? They've also got huge sickle shaped mandibles that are enough to draw blood and cut you good, even if males can not sting you. I posted a link for my source on this interesting, and massive, Polistes species if you'd want to read about it. Look forward to seeing more videos from you in the future! vespa-bicolor.net/main/vespid/polistes-gigas.htm

I had some nesting under the siding about five feet from my back door. I was unintentionally shaking their nest whenever I closed the back door, essentially. They just flew around. It was early in the season, though, and they eventually relocated when I started using the attic fan (big fan, sucks in outdoor air and through gaps in walls, blows it out the attic space, shakes the whole house, which some critters don't like). I'm terrified of anything large that buzzes and even I think they were pretty chill.

would a non queens sting be worse? I got stung twice by regular hornets and its not something I would allow to sting me 5 times.
@JacksWorldofWildlife2 жыл бұрын
Possibly! However queens are larger and have to hunt prey as well when they start a new nest. It’s possible their sting are less severe but I’ll have to try a worker to make sure!

My experience the yellow jacket is not even close to as painful as the giant hornets. You took it like a boss.

I got stung by one of these 2 weeks ago in the lower back and it felt like I was being electrocuted. It’s way way worse then a yellow jacket and it hurt for 2 full days. He made it seem like nothing but I know first hand it hurts like hell. I love when they say it’s not that bad. I’d get stung by 10 yellow jacket at once instead of that hornet again.

What did I just watch, a man intentionally wanting to get stung? Seems like you are an expert, so, how painful or dangerous is it when these sting you in the neck, near your artery? And how often will they go for your eyes?
@JacksWorldofWildlife3 жыл бұрын
Lol they won’t target eyes or specific body parts, in fact these species are usually uninterested in attack humans in any capacity and will only sting if they feel their lives or nests are in danger. It’s a painful sting but more than bearable.

How about Vespa luctuosa? The most toxic hornet sting (and among the most toxic among insect venoms) in terms of LD50, though moderated by it being smaller than Vespa mandarinia and Vespa tropica? Btw, Vespa tropica also has a lower LD50 than Vespa mandarinia, but the latter is bigger, though not much bigger, which means it's still possible that Vespa tropica would still be more painful.

Id be interested in trying more Vespa species

Fair play to you that's all I can say, I think you should definitely go for the Japanese giant hornet though and compare it

Farout man. You got a real set of nuts. I don't even have the balls to try that.
