“Murder, Inc.” was easily my favorite mobster subsidiary, hands down! When I first read of their exploits in ‘The Last Mafioso,’ I wasn’t happy until I’d looked them up for myself in ‘We Only Kill Each Other,’ & Turkus’ ‘Murder, [Incorporated] Inc.’ as old newspapers were calling them,.. … eventually. Your versions are more vivid & much more locally-informed than most!! “Shots rang out!” cracks me up everytime.♥️😂🤣😂😇 It took me quite a while to piece them together back in the days when you could only find the stories in books & old newspapers. But everywhere I went, especially visits to NYC, they were following me around: Strauss, Maione, Weiss, Abbandando, Levine, Anastasia, & of course, Prince Charming himself: Louis Lepke, as he was known. It’s difficult today for most people to recall or even imagine Italian, Jewish, Polish, & Irish gangsters: noses broken, scars, two-toned wingtips, cigars, fedoras, pinstripes, gold grills, & busted-up knuckles, fingers missing, faded-haircuts. But here they are, again, & in vivid color, too!! What made them stand-out most for me, back then, was how the USA-concept & the harsh conditioning of immigrant-status, impoverishment, adversity at home-all made them “work together” in the interests of living, of business-legal & illegal, & of coming-up in the world, eventually. “Going legit.” The ethnic divisions mattered less than who they worked under, whose team gave them a start, & whatever marginal chances they got to earn a little money in NY-concept. Or in Chicago, Philly, Detroit-concepts. They didn’t “romanticize” the life in the ways that people do today. They wanted a whole lot better than thuggin’ for dollars for their own children, as is evident. Their goals & objectives weren’t hazy, confused, mixed-up. No one could even remotely guess who their descendants are, if any, (nor who gained status & legitimacy from associating with them) a mere 100 years later. 50 years later, in most cases!! “From Assassination to Assimilation,” in roughly only 50 years’ time. It IS an American-concept story, but it’s also a racial-construct story. 🇺🇸🏴‍☠️🇺🇸🏴‍☠️🇺🇸 Remarkable storytelling!! Impeccable research! But where’s Martin “Buggsy” Goldstein’s close-up. He & “Happy” were pals! They & Strauss all somehow put up with Reles-imagine that! See how that went. ♥️🍁🍂💐

I’ve often wondered if Edward G Robinson based his Enrico “Little Caesar” Bandella on Martin Goldstein. Or Steve Cochran’s “Big Ed” from White Heat reminds me of Pittsburgh Phil in his demeanor and dress.

Sometimes I wonder what it would have been like to live in those days and spend time among the gangsters of the era... but the more I look at these guys the more I realize just what a bunch of worthless dirtbags these people are. The one thing that I find so interesting is how many 'suspended sentences' and low prison time these people got. If these people did what they did today they would have had far longer sentences imposed on them The criminal justice system today is far harsher than it was back then. The only way it was harsher in those days is that death sentences for murder were more quickly carried out instead of spending decades behind appeal processes.
