BFS & Anxiety Support

4 жыл бұрын

A casual chat about muscle twitching (Fasciculations / BFS) whilst I walk through the Forrest.
Muscle twitching is something that can come out of nowhere and when chronic or persistent it can cause concern triggering stress and anxiety. Muscle twitching with no other symptoms or cause for concern is called benign fasciculation syndrome, it can come with the baggage of anxiety but I will help you guys deal with that too.
It`s so important to discuss how we feel and whats going on, never keep any anxiety or negative energy inside, talk about it and deal with the core issues!
In today's video I chat about some of my own BFS symptoms, how I am currently twitching from head to toe since my return from ASIA last September and I also touch on Mental health.
BFS is nothing guys so just power on, get out and enjoy life !
As always i recommend that you speak to your doctor and do not try to get diagnoses online, if your issues are of a benign nature then please subscribe to my channel as I shall be uploading regularly, mostly focusing on providing you support for BFS and Anxiety.
I hope my VLOG helps you guys that are currently trying to understand why your twitching, until the next one, take care !

I came back to this video for some calming effect. The setting and the discussion about BFS is so reassuring. Everything you talk about is exactly what I have going on. I'm an active person and the hotspot on my tricep has been going on an off for two years now. My calves have been going on and off since about 2010. Your take on life is great and I've tried to adopt this mentality. Knowing there are others out there with this condition is really helpful. I'm going to look into the Facebook group you've mentioned. Thanks again for making these videos and keeping so positive. You are really helping people.

Thank you for this video. As a positive note I can tell you it will all pass once you get your mental health in order. Today marks a year from the start of my anxiety attack. I had it all...chest pain, numbness, tingling, fevers, stomach problems, foot feeling asleep, calf twitching and so so much more. It goes away. It’s your body’s reacting to your anxiety. I literally stopped wearing pants for 6 months so I could feel the twitching less. It will all go away. I promise you it will go away. For me, it helped by stopping everything in my life, temporarily, that caused me anxiousness or too much stimulation. So for me it was coffee, googling every single symptom I felt, worrying about my job situation, worrying about my life goals, etc. I stopped and strictly only went to work and church or work and prayed and just stopped with everything in my power to stop worrying. My anxiety attacks/symptoms got to a point where I was literally telling myself I would rather die then live every day the way I was living. The saying “it will pass” is so true. It will go away. Find calmness, find your peace, whatever and wherever it is. For me, it was Jesus. Slow down, take your time, life will always work itself for you. Let me know if there is anything you need. ❤️

@Ben Smalley hey man..i had it all. doctor called it "manifestation". essentially my brain was creating everything i was thinking about. My advice - dont google, live your life as best as you can. take each day literally minute by minute. meditate/pray. enjoy doing something you used to (for me it was playing basketball). and dont google (i know i said it twice but its so important i promise). Ive been a year and half free from it and I promise there is light. your bodys sensations take a few weeks to stop since they were in hyperdrive for so long, but it will all go away. I have no lingering symptoms from my anxiety attack anymore

Wow that is literally what I am feeling right now. I've had calf twitches for almost 6-7 months on and off every day. The most annoying part is when I lie down to go to sleep and then cannot sleep because I feel my calf twitching or the bottom of my feet like a numbness or crawling sensation. Literally would drive me nuts cannot sleep. Lucky if I get 3 hours of sleep the past couple of nights. So frustrating and I'm just drained. Trying to find ways not to think about it while at rest but sometimes its so hard.

@Ben Smalley not sure...but i just know that anxiety fucks with everything very hard. the body is essentially going through alot (thinking that is what it needs to be doing) so who knows....i would say more than likely it is a cause , but again im not a doc or anything. if you, like me, did every test every doctor, every specialist, knocked out every possibility, more than likely the culprit is the current anxiety situation. Again, it takes time, but once you calm down, the body will follow. Took me a little longer than i would have wanted but it is all gone.

Hang in there, twitching alone with no other symptoms shouldn’t be overly worrying so please try to reduce that anxiety. I’ve had periods of relative calm but this past four months it’s been off the chart! I’m at least 13 years in since my first constant twitching hotspot.. I did twitch before that too but not as constant.

Thank you for these videos. I'm in year two of BFS. I've had all the tests. It's just BFS. Ok, so great - I'm not worried I have ALS or MS anymore. The problem is that it's such a mental game. When the twitches go crazy I want out of my body. It feels like my body is a prison. I'm on an anti-depressant and anti-anxiety medication. I'm taking daily walks and spending time with my kids, my new puppy, and work. I'm trying to work on sitting with this diagnosis and looking it in the face and saying, "it's ok - you can be here." Since it's going to be here whether I like it or not. Some days I do that really well. Some days I don't. I hate that when it's raining outside and my kids ask if we can watch a family movie I dread sitting down instead of being excited to chill with them and relax. I hate that this will probably never go away but I know I need to accept that it will never go away and stop thinking that it might. If I just do this (insert: acupuncture, elimination diet, naturopath, magnesium, hypnosis, etc. etc.) it will go away. But the only thing that will work is acceptance. So I guess that's my work now - acceptance. Thanks for sharing your story. This can feel like a very isolating issue that no one but another sufferer can possibly comprehend.

Great video. I started experiencing twitches about 15 years ago and being that my grandfather had passed from ALS, I was convinced I had it too. I went to the same doctor group that he went to and the doctor told me that I had a greater chance of being struck by lightning than having ALS and to go and have a great day…and I did. 15 years later, I still twitch during periods of high stress, but I know I’m ok.

My calve twitches for like 7 minutes already and it doesn't stop but usually I had only a couple of twitches before. And does your twitches keep going if you move this muscle or it stops right after?

Thank you for this video. I have been twitching for two months now (mostly in my calf and leg muscles, and seldom in the arms and back) after I played some sports. After I had my EMG-NCV test, it was found out that everything is normal which is quite a relief. Before the said test, I was worrying a lot which somehow worsened the twitching. So, after my results came out, I noticed that the twitching does not happen too often anymore (since I started to worry less, or not at all). Here's what I did which I hope will help some of you. - I did not think about the twitching too often (based on experience, thinking about it just leads to more twitching) - I was low in Vit D, so I supplemented with it (good combo is Vit D3 and K2) - Supplementing with Magnesium also helped me a lot (I learned that Mg is needed for Vit D to work). I take 3 capsules a day which worked miracles for me. (Note: consult your doctor before taking any supplements) - I started to go out in the morning just to have a short walk (sunlight improves my mood, free Vit D as well!) - Every day, I try my best to only think positive thoughts (try reading The Secret by Rhonda Byrne; "thoughts become things")

Thanks for another good video. One thing though; when you mention that it doesn't hurt us. Well, it really does, mentally when we have rough days-periods and I get it physically too with fatigue and aches (especially in my legs). So maybe rephrase a bit to it doesn't hurt you in a dangerous way or something like that? Cheers.
@bfsanxietysupport

Raymond Pettersen It’s intentionality phrased that way, I believe in speaking positively and I firmly believe that we are in control of our metal state and thought process.. So yes whilst I agree that it does impact and hurt mentally this is something you can overcome and then you will have no pain! The twitching itself doesn’t cause actual physical pain so that’s what I refer too. Also we should also be careful to assume that the aches and fatigue are connected. Many people with prolonged anxiety and stress actually get fatigued and other symptoms too. My advice is try your best to not focus on the twitching and also try to never connect twitching your all the other sporadic symptoms you may have. Give less time to thinking inward and look outward.

They fire off constantly all up and down them and on the inside arches of my feet, only feel about 50% them and they aren’t that easy to see but definitely always there. The insides of my knee and middle of my thighs have became a bit of a hotspot in the last few days too. Still no weakness thankfully. I wish someone had told me what I know now... THE REAL CAUSE of MY BFS. I have been suffering from BFS twitching for 4 years. It began during the lockdown. I started searching the internet to find out more about it, only to find myself looking at horrible diseases that I could be suffering from. It started in my calves, hands, and arms, and then spread all over, including my chest where it felt like an internal tremor. I went to a neurologist, got cranial CT scans, saw psychiatrists, and even my psychologist seemed unable to help me. I am taking the time to share my experience with you because I would have loved to know the REAL REASON years before I was able to find it. I hope it gives you peace of mind as it did for me. I am not a medical doctor, and this is in no way medical advice. I am simply sharing my experience because I couldn't live in peace, thinking I could have a serious disease without doing anything about it, until I found the ROOT CAUSE of my twitching. Once I discovered it, I was able to let it go and stop twitching. Long story short: I had respiratory alkalosis caused by my anxiety. Alkalosis causes twitching because of the free calcium ions that cause the muscles to misfire. This leads to more anxiety, more respiratory distress, and therefore more twitching. Fortunately, in Mexico, I walked into a hospital and told the lab that my doctor had ordered an ARTERIAL BLOOD GAS test, and they did it. That was the piece of evidence that showed me my blood was too alkaline. Reading other medical studies, I have come to believe that for some reason, my fight or flight mode is always in overdrive. Some people have it because of PTSD, others as a result of childhood trauma, or the loss of a loved one. If you find yourself in this situation, I am not sure if you can ask your doctor to perform this kind of test just to give you peace of mind. But if you cannot do that and want to experience a positive change in the twitching, work on your anxiety, and in turn, your breathing will return to normal, eventually stopping the twitching. I am not a native English speaker, but I hope that with my words and personal experience, I could have pointed out a way for you to find some peace and stop fighting this invisible monster that only gets stronger if you fight it.
@shanbazall
@shanbazall 10 ай бұрын
Thanks for sharing this. Very helpful as its another thing to consider. I am curious about this since i stopped smoking few months ago and now i wonder how that might have had an effect on respiratory alkalosis if I do have it. more oxygen intake means more alkalosis, right ? What exactly do you mean with respiratory distress ? I think I might have had some forms of respiratory distress for over 5 years because of anxiety and poor physical health. Now that i've increased the amount of excercise, do you think that might contribute to the alkalosis ? Also. Is respiratory alkalosis a short state or does it become long lasting ? Like if I stop breathing for awhile, does it go away ?

Thank you so much for this! I’m in the middle of testing after seeing a neurologist and so far tests are coming back normal. My twitches started nearly 4 months ago. I had been dealing with extra stress and maybe that’s what triggered the twitches? They started in just one calf but have spread throughout both legs (calves, quads, hamstrings, knees), feet, occasionally my shoulder or bicep, hip flexor, side, even abdomen. The twitches in my calves and feet are nearly constant. I’m definitely a high strung, high energy, worrier. I need to work on that. Maybe that will help eventually.

Hi @Neurophysiology. I hope you are well. Going off topic quickly, is Benign Fasiculation syndrome a brain disorder? And what can be the causes? It’s just about 6 months ago I caught covid, and about a week later I took ketamine for the first time. 2 days later I woke up with involuntary twitching and myclonic jerks. A few days later it went, but the one thing that happened a few days after that, and has stuck ever since, is that both of my calves constantly twitch at rest, and it led me to having a mental breakdown. I paid to see a private neurologist and he told me that it is all anxiety related, as I am scared that using drugs once has ruined my whole life. I had an emg on my calves and it came back clear. Of course I’m not asking for medical advice over the internet. But in your opinion, do u think this can go away? And would something like Botox be a suitable treatment? Thanks

Can you pin point differences between bad twitches (asl) and BFS Does muscle weakness come first with als then twitches. Do both only happen at rest?
@bfsanxietysupport
@bfsanxietysupport 4 жыл бұрын
+elesha burgess I mention this in either my first vlog or the FAQ I think.. essentially in bad it’s due to neurogenic changes so the twitching is a result of the changes, there will generally be other symptoms that a doctor or neurologist will identify during a clinical exam. In BFS, they can’t see any other symptoms of concern so it’s classed as benign.

What if the trigger is mold combined with histamine intolerance? And a sick person is being told constantly for 10 years - "its anxiety" ? I started to have Health Anxiety 3 years ago when my kid is born. I was finishing my MBA and was working full time as a plant manager. I was so tired. From there I started to be worried about everything about my health and the health of my kid. LIKE EVERYTHING. Worst, last year they found a tumor on one of my kidneys. Even if it was minor, it still brings me a lot of stress and anxiety. So 6 months ago, I was already in a high anxiety states then I got a big fight with my boss and he got fired then I took his job. After that, my body totally felt weak, I had lots of pain every day and lots of twitching to everywhere. 6 months later, my anxiety really goes down, but still I have lots of twitch and still lots of pain especially in my ankles and forearms… I don’t really feel weak, but I feel that I have no resistance at all to effort. I saw my doctor 3 time in the last 6 month and she not worried at all. I got blood test and everything was ok. She does not want me to have an EMG because its clear for her that my symptoms is related to my anxiety and all the recent events of my life. Even if it seems to be clear that anxiety could be the reason of all that, it just don’t get into my mind… I also feel lost because without an EMG, I am not sure at 100% its not something bad… I just cant get out of this... (Sorry for my English, its is not my native language)

It all began with a consistent "sinking feeling" or nervous feeling in my glute area and lower back for weeks. It was a very strange sensation, like when you're going down on a rollercoaster but low intensity and constant. The twitching followed once that feeling subsided, this all happened end of 2020 for me after a long period of anxiety. Never had any of it before then. Daily stretching routine has had a tangible positive effect on my twitches. Calf, quads, lats, rear+front deltoid, eye lids, rib area all common areas for me. Leg twitches always feel like worms the others feel like contractions. One concern recently is I've noticed I can't flex my left Calf the same as right and it feels smaller. I take relief in the fact that anxiety is a stark common denominator in anyone suffering from BFS. I've got a neurology appointment coming up and I hope that will rule out anything sinister. Best of luck to any fellow twitchers. Please share your own experience if any of this sounds familiar

Hi guys thanks for asking for a follow-up. So far I've had the EMG test and various phyical neurological examinations on separate occasions and each time they ruled out anything concerning to do with the muscle twitching or any other musculoskeletal symptoms that I'd experienced. The formal diagnosis is Cramp Fasciculation Syndrome. As a final reassurance my neurologist booked me in for an MRI of my lower spine, which is in a couple of weeks. Symptoms have improved greatly as has my mental state regarding the twitching. I've since had a lot of time to reflect on these findings and here's what I now believe: Once any sinister possibilities ruled out by a medical proffesional blood test for any deficiencies and seeing a Neurologist, I think its then very clear there is one common denominator between all of us twitchers, and that's *Health Anxiety*. It's become reallty clear to me, and the more I learn about the brain and the power of our thoughts and fears the more i am certain that this is something that can be overcome or at least lived with in a way that does not disrupt or upset you. It's going to take time. Steps that have really helped: The biggest one STOP WORRYING. I would put that for step 2, 3, 4 and maybe 5 too! Get good Sleep and work on improving your circadian rhythm, (listen to Andrew Hubermans video about sleep on KZbin) Do not let the twitching scare you from doing excercise, keep going and dont worry. introduce strecthing before and after. Fix your diet, lower sugar, caffiene, alcohol, drug use. introduce fish oil with at least 1000mg of EPA per day for at least 8 weeks, this has much to do with Depressive symptoms related to mood as a possible link (Once again listen to Huberman on this matter too) I've moved on with my life, stopped thinking about it all the time and focused my attention elsewhere immediately anytime theres a twitch and eventually the twitches have become less frequent and less severe. The brain is a frightfully powerful tool and a brilliant trickster! Its approaching 1 year since onset of my symptoms. I'm happy to talk to anyone who needs my support.

@@JackyRogue thank you so so much for this. I M so glad you are okay and have been able to put everything behind you and move onto being a happy healthy person once again. I cannot wait to feel like that way soon. You are so true. Brain is such powerful tool! It has made me believe every sinister possible as reality when i do not even know the truth yet. I still have yet to go to the doctor and it terrifies me but i know i have to. I have never been diagnosed as anxious but I know I struggle from health anxiety and my brain like you said is making every single second of past month and a half just impossible to live. I have a one year old and a loving caring family and all I do all day is look at their faces and imagine their lives moving on without me. I am swallowed by my thoughts and my mind keeps looking for symptoms new signs and then it’s like fueling an already blazing fire. Everyday has been a challenge to get up and breathe. But I have hope from listening to fellow experiencers like yourself and I truly appreciate you sharing your thoughts and experiences. I will try Andrew Huberman and though i am already taking fish oil, I had stopped few days ago, which now I will take a note to take daily. I wish you nothing but the best and once again truly glad to hear that you are doing so so much better. Always stay blessed and healthy as that is what this life actually basically boils down to. I have a lot of twitching on a lot of spots. I had 3 EMGs so far, several neurologists exams, and various tests. I have "hot spots" those are literal spots on body where twitching appears more often and it's quite localized. Like both quads near knee, both thumbs, left side of upper lip, lately small portion of chest area etc. But I also have them all around on other places. It's scary because they are always different, sometimes strong, and prominent, other times, barely there little pops, sometimes last for few hours, sometimes weeks, even months, usually in same area. This started, I think, maybe even 10 years ago. Freaking dr Google scared the crap out of me! I think BFS, if I have that HAS TO have some causes, I am thinking problem with electrolytes even if that's not visible in blood tests, anxiety, one doctor even suggested problem with tendons (because my hot spots are all near joints and tendons), also Iron deficiency, B12 deficiency, hormonal imbalances etc.I still have no answers but I am trying not to get so scared every time I got them. Now the last one, near shoulder on chest, lasted 2 freaking months! It still goes on sometimes. And the the thumb one 7 weeks and dr "kindly" suggested als to me because my thumb was jumping like crazy (it was 7 years ago so...). And lately quite violent, fast twitching on right tricep... Those on eyelid or calves I don't even count.

Bottom line, but I'm putting it at the top: *You've nothing to fear* Potassium channels, autoantibodies, chronic inflammation... I've done my research and have my hypotheses, but the causes are likely as diverse as the presentation of the symptom, which manifests across a plexus in people of all walks of life. One common thread seems to be anxiety, naturally, and the need for reassurance. Most should be able to find this after a few months with no other symptoms. I hope you can find peace of mind.

@@sound_elevation Thanks! I especially agree with this: "One common thread seems to be anxiety, naturally, and the need for reassurance." If you spend hours daily looking for twitches or other symptoms, chances are, you will find them and get scared and cause more of them by hyperventilating. I am pretty sure I have huge health anxiety and a lot of things I find scary others wouldn't even notice, but this is how this mental disease works.

Courtney Smith It’s common for BFS to start off in a single location, you notice it then in a matter of days or weeks it’s widespread. Could be that you’ve tuned into your body and just noticing everything now. Being hyper aware with bfs is not good, try to filter out the noise and do t think about it.

I have had muscle twitches for about 1 or 2 months in mostly the thighs and arms but they can happen for me everywhere. I only get them when I’m laying down and stretching helps but my arms can sometimes get them when I’m walking. I don’t have any other problems yet. I usually get them on my most active days and when I’m thinking about them. I was wondering if als could be a possibility or if it’s bfs. I’m only 13 and my parents aren’t worried UPDATE: I found out it was either stress or a mix of stress and bfs, I know it isn’t something to worry about because my amount of twitches went down to about 10% of what it was when I was worrying

Many people say its anxiety, but in my case, after 4 months, i am not sure, or rather I cannot trace the worst episodes to particular stressful periods. One night, during heavy twitching i just went to sleep on a terrace when it was not that cold. and.... twitches stopped totally! After few hours of excellent sleep, went to the bathroom... and INSTANTLY twitches all over! This leads me to blame histamine/mold as a trigger. But could also be many factors

BFS & Anxiety Support The last month I’ve experienced some body wide twitching and I mean everywhere my lips, eye, my arms and legs, sides of my stomach, everywhere. It started one day after I noticed it in my calf from working out. The next morning it hit me like a train. My legs felt like noodles especially going up and down stairs. My calf’s were super tight. I also had some pain and soreness in my legs hamstrings and calf’s and glutes. Of course I went on doctor google and saw MND and als. I’ve had some pretty bad anxiety my whole life, irrational fears, health anxiety, etc. So I went to my pcp and we did bloodwork and everything was fine. He assured me I didn’t have a MND or ALS. But he referred me to a neurologist anyway. We did a clinical exam and everything was fine, I had some briske reflexes in my knees but he said since I was so young and in good shape, and they were bilateral, it was nothing concerning. And I was nervous and uptight etc... he assured me that MND doesn’t start as I’ve prescribed it. He didn’t want to do an EMG and sent me on my way. With my job I’m fortunate to know a lot of people so I sought another neurologist. Both neuros have been practicing for over 27 years. Really good guys. So we did an EMG and it was clean. Only abnormality I had was slightly prolonged f wave latencies in my legs but he said that was because I’m tall and have longer limbs. I said ok and with my research that turned out to be true. We did both my legs my back and neck, and my right arm and hand, didn’t do my left arm. They assured me EMGs don’t miss anything when done properly and if this was a MND with the twitching I’m having it would have 100 percent shown up on the EMG as the twitching is a sign of atrophying apparently and the EMG can pick up symptoms way longer before a patient can feel them. Just wanted y’all’s advice? Also I’ve experienced a huge increase in appetite, I struggle to eat enough and stay full. They said that was my anxiety and hormones released in my body. They but me on two anxiety and depression medications and paired me with a behavioral therapist and we meet twice a month. She’s really nice and sweet. But I’m just worried and scared that the EMG was done too early even though they assured me they can’t be done too early lol. I read about one guy who had the twitching like me who had an EMG which was clean and he experienced weakness about 6 months after when he noticed his leg wasn’t working properly and he had als. Which scared me to death. I also read where some doctors and scientists believe that bacteria leaving the gut can cause MND which I’ve had acid reflux and some gut problems my whole life, see the connection I made there? Made my anxiety worse. Which I’m sure his EMG wasn’t done properly and they only did his left side not his right which made me feel they missed something. I would really appreciate anyone’s advice.

I don' think I'd worry about mine either, if I didn't have 20 other symptoms going on. Bone pain, cramping, stiffness, numbness and the list goes on and on. From running marathons 3 years ago to a shell of myself today. A dozen different diagnosis and mis-diagnosis. Lyme, Neuropathy, BFS, neck issues, Fibro. What an absolute joke - these Dr's know very little - especially neurologists. When it comes to the brain - the medical community is lost.

BFS & Anxiety Support I’m writing this while crying. Thank you so much for your videos, they are comforting. Please do another video with other symptoms you experience. I’m struggling with bfs, health anxiety and depression. I got married last year and since then I have put my life on hold because every new symptom kills me inside and I don’t know what to make of it. I’m constantly afraid. I have been having buzzing and interval tremors in my legs, especially my calves. It terrifies me. A have an appointment with the neurologist next week and I’m so afraid. Is this a symptom of bfs? Is it not? Is any one out there experiencing the same thing? A video of you explaining other symptoms would increase my understanding of bfs since you have had it for years. Thank you so much and god bless.

Rooted Rotor I agree with you 100%. It’s all about $. I am so disappointed by the way physicians handle everything.
