Should Derek Lunsford Compete in the Open?

At the 2022 Pittsburgh Pro, reigning Olympia 212 champion Derek Lunsford showed up to guest pose alongside 2019 Mr. Olympia Brandon Curry, 2021 Arnold Classic Champion Nick Walker, and 2021 Olympia 4th place finisher Hunter Labrada. By the end of that presentation, Lunsford had become the topic of conversation because he looked like he could compete in the men’s open soon. There had always been talk about him making the jump someday. Could it be sooner than we think?

I agree! His issue was and probably will be again is conditioning. His V taper is better than Curry's and seeing him side by side with Nick, There's no question who's got better Nick's arms are better but Derek has better proportions. If he comes in Hadi conditioning I believe he can win.

Please keep these round tables going!! 90s to early 2000s is my favorite era of bodybuilding. Dennis is really improving his mediation skills. He tries to give everyone a chance to talk and doesn't let heated disagreements get out of hand. With Dennis doing the old school podcasts and Fouad doing the current generation, bodybuilding media is in a great place right now.

90's and early to mid 2000's was the time to bodybuild to make real good money without the need to really hustle like now with social media, commitments to post for sponsors. Back then no social media, generally the guys all received good contracts, extra money with guest poses.

They are not exaggerating about Derek. I saw those clips and pics of him especially compared to Cury and Walker. I think Derek can be as high as 2nd or 3rd. It’s foolish for him to do the 212. He’d have to eat up at least 20 lbs of muscle.
