I'm a software engineer with a graphics programming background. What a lot of people don't understand about GPUs is that the compute units only play a role during part of the rendering process (mainly vertex/fragment shading), it is not the entire GPU, a large chunk of the GPU is fixed function hardware that exists outside the compute units. If you look at a die shot of the PS5's SoC, the compute units only take up around half of the GPU die area, the other half consists of shared components that are common to both the Series X and PS5. But those shared components run 22% faster on the PS5 because the GPU is clocked 22% faster (2.23ghz vs 1.825ghz). I've been telling people not to underestimate the clock speed advantage since before the consoles even launched. Meanwhile, you have people like Digital Foundry acting surprised, and I'm just sitting back saying: I told you so. The fact is, most of the performance difference will come down to the quality of each port, and how each game utilises the GPU. If a game has a bottleneck on compute, it will likely run faster on the Series X, if it doesn't, it will likely run faster on the PS5, because most of the other components of the GPU run faster. It's not that one is better than the other, they're just better at different things.

@@jehannesweggen Firstly, I want to clarify something in your comment, "games like XB360 era used higher textures for games", this is actually not true from a resolution standpoint, most games from that era used much lower resolution textures. But how games dealt with textures has changed a lot since the 360 era. There was much heavier reliance on hacks and tricks to make things look good. I'll talk about two aspects I believe might be related to what you've described. During the 360 era, it was very common to use detail textures, I suspect this is what you're referring to. They are basically fine detail textures that would get mapped on top of a low resolution texture to make it appear more detailed than it really is (especially when looking at the surface up close). Detail textures are still used today, but it's far less common since textures are generally much higher resolution now, so it reduces the need to add fake detail to make a low resolution texture look good. To put it another way, these days you're not being tricked into thinking there's more detail than there actually is, you're just looking at the detail that really exists. The other thing that has changed is how games deal with texturing and lighting in general. During the 360 era, textures were hand crafted by artists with most of the lighting and surface detail baked into the texture itself. They would basically look like photos, and if your engine was fancy, you might have normal maps to add per-pixel lighting to your games, but for the most part, things were pretty simple, and it looked good, because you basically just mapped a photo onto a 3D model. The problem with this approach is that it's not very flexible and doesn't reflect how surfaces work in the real world. Most modern 3D engines will likely use deferred shading and physically based rendering, which is an entirely different paradigm. Rather than mapping what is basically a photo onto your 3D model, you provide a series of textures that describe different aspects of the surface, which allows artists to describe surfaces based on their physical properties. Examples of these textures include the albedo map (which just has the base color of the surface without any shading or other effects), the normal map (also used in the 360 era, describes the small changes in direction on a surface), whether the surface is metallic or dielectric, the roughness of the surface etc. A modern 3D engine uses all this information, along with what it knows about the environment to derive the final surface color, this is obviously very different from taking a photo and applying it as a texture to a 3D model. A lot more work goes into deriving the final color, and most of it is done algorithmically and without the artist's input. So in a way, I guess some of the artistic element is lost in modern 3D engines, but overall I feel it's a net win since it allows surfaces to look more realistic, because surfaces are described in a more realistic and physically based way, and modern 3D engines can do more with that information. Anyway, I'll leave it there, but as I said, I suspect you're thinking about detail textures, but it's worth keeping in mind that things have changed a lot over the last 15-20 years.

@@RazielAU WoW's that's a lot of time and effort and information i thank you sir it's well received and appreciated :D it's very uncommon to get this kind of information and attention on youtube with exception on tech channels like Linus, Digital Foundry, Tweakers etc. Yeah i knew that XB360 used a mix of handcrafted textures on lower textures and that the resolution was lower with on consoles around 720P and PC 1080P and maybe 4K for the enthusiasts during that era. But at the end of the XB360 era i skipped XB1 and went PC because of modding on Nexus and especially Skyrim was awesome cause i could replace settings with mods and the results was more and smoother framerate with better graphics and even if my screen was 1080P there was a big difference if i used vanilla textures or 1K textures or 2k textures. Later on with photorealistic mod lists for Witcher 3 and Red Dead Redemption 2 and Kingdom Come Deliverance it became breathtaking how far graphics could go with collaboration between the creators and the mod community and not because of you and those creators cause i think it's from directions above.. Games almost never reach their full potential (Hello Games really pushes No Man's Sky with the latest update) without the mod community and maybe during the XB360 era there was more time for the creators to push their limits and the limits of the hardware ? I still enjoy dozens of classics like Elder Scrolls, Fallout, Dragon age, Mass Effect, Fable etc. there's is just something about those games.. or it's just nostalgia the same i have with Zelda.. Yeah technology really advanced but with that something's were lost the same with certain craftsmanship.. not that creators nowadays aren't talented or don't have imagination but Nintendo is one of the few who have still people who can write code and who can design from the ground up. Sure they use technologies also to make things easier and cheaper and yeah Nintendo Switch graphics don't look like much compared to PS and XB but still if u consider what specs Nintendo works with it's very impressive especially if u include the physics from Tears of the Kingdom. Games like Zelda Breath of the Wild and Tears of the kingdom art style from cell shaded and light and soft colours make it look like graphics don't matter and I'm going to play them forever cause these games are timeless and that's what every creator should strive for right ? Something to create and share that.. in the hope players will keep playing it so it will last forever and to do that creators should use technology but also invest more of themselves in games and push their limits and push their imagination and i hope for me as gamer and for creators.. That those greedy goblins wake up and give u people time and resources and some damn trust and respect so u can so your thing and achieve something that will last forever but that's easy for me to say i don't work in your world so who knows.. I do build cities and castles complete with seas and forests and lakes with waterfalls and ports with Fallout 4 but.. that's more modeling with the use of mods so basically using other's people design and adapt that to my imagination.. It's kinda funny how a game like Fallout 4 never was meant to be used like that but then goes far beyond builder games who were meant to be used like that.. Oh and if u played Fallout 4 the original map is around 10% of the game and the real treasure is beyond borders it's ridiculous how huge it is.. takes me around 25 minutes to walk from 1 side of the map to the end of the map.. Anyways u gave a lot information and it's appreciated and i can't talk about technology like that so it went way of course but I'm rooting for all u creative minds so good luck in your endeavors and players will always pay for classics.. Heck i even got jars just for some franchises like Zelda, Dark Souls, Elder Scrolls, Fable etc. and a special jar for games like Kena, KCD, Plague Tale, Ori, Tunic, Chasm, Alwa, Henrietta etc. In the hope something comes along where technology and creativity meet each other to make something amazing and there's surge in Pixel art games :D luv those classics! @@jehannesweggen I have a lot of respect for the modding community. It largely comes down to passion, which the modding community has, and where I feel a lot of modern games fail. The issue isn't advances in technology, it's an issue where people with no passion for games are trying to make them. Older games were better because they were entirely made by people who had a strong passion for games, which is rarely true these days.

I don't know about u but i find buying and playing games day 1 is in 99,99% a waste of time and money.. buying and playing anything but exclusives on PS is a waste of time and money.. You prolly don't like that narrative so u prolly going to say that Spiderman, Horizon, GoW etc. have more and longer gameplay but still if u just compare the graphics Hell Blade 2 is way more impressive than anything PS has. Why do u only care about current generation ? if PS games are so great wouldn't u want to keep playing in stead throwing them in the trash ? I'm still luvin Fable, Mass Effect, Dragon Age, Skyrim, Witcher, Fallout etc. cuz they're just better than games nowadays.. Besides gameplay even some XB360 games have higher textures than games from 2024 cause in those days developer's used real life photos for their design.. while nowadays devs use more effects than real textures.. That's why I'm a fan of modding if u want to see real graphics check out Photorealistic Skyrim, Witcher 3, Kingdom Come Deliverance, Red Dead Redemption 2 etc. it looks and sounds phenomenal :D and no seeing it on youtube doesn't do it justice..

Much of this has been known even before these consoles launched. Digital Foundry was bending over backwards for a long time, not warning to accept it, and doing a lot to explain away the data, muddying the obvious explanations. This is a good lesson in theoretical power vs actual REAL-WORLD performance. It's especially relevant when dealing with highly customized hardware.

Simple. 1- ps5 is not using bloated windows or 3 OS like XSX/XSS have to use. They using custom Linux OS. Linux is a lot lighter os, steam deck is proof of this also. 2- ps5 cpu/gpu clock speed is a lot faster 3- ps5 is not using different Vram memory configuration, where Xbox Has differing memory configuration. 4- ps5 is not using DirectX. DX 11/12 are bloatware. Steam deck is proof of why many steam games run better on it. Sony Lower level Api is better then bloated DX 11/12. Sony own custom API is a lot faster. Just like Vulkan.api helps make steam deck run pc games better. Thanks to light Linux OS and better api like vulkan. 5- Sony NVME Ssd is also faster. 5500 mb/sec for onboard ssd, and it is standard on pc hardware with nvme PCI express 4.0, adding additional nvme ssd can run even faster. Ms 1st party game list is horrible at best. They had so many IP before end of Xbox 360 days. Where are they now? gone / dead or forgotten. Seems ms doesn’t seem care about gaming. Games sell consoles. Without good 1st party games and 3rd party games. Console System won’t sell. Sony also has huge indie dev games too. Xbox has forgotten this. Surprised Phil Spencer hasn’t been fired yet. Cus he should be. He done nothing but sit on his ass. Pat himself for doing a good job. After all ppl fired for Activision deal.

It's not that they don't feel a need, but there is a economical recession going on. People are struggling to pay for adulting so a PS5 or otherwise is not a priority. Even at the peak of financial freedom plastic entertainment should only be a throttled luxury and never a need.

The point is that Sony never really boasted about having higher performance. Microsoft did a whole marketing campaign around that and failed miserably. The saddest part is that on paper they were kinda right. Xbox silicon is much larger and expensive, but Sony indeed outsmarted Microsoft on how they planned the consoles

Absolutely, anything is very marginal anyway. Yes the power does go to Xbox, but it’s so little difference anyway it’s not even noticeable. 2tfs and additional CUs isn’t a world of differences, however Sonys gpu is higher clock speed it’s variable, same with their cpu slightly less than XB, but same again Sony cpu speed is variable.

No Mans Sky on PS5, stutters. No Mans Sky on my Series X, zero stutter. I am sure there are many games that run on PS5 great and many that run on Series X very well, see example. The two consoles are almost identical, similar CPU/GPU from AMD, 16 gig of RAM, SSD storage. The main advantage the PS5 has is good API tools, unified memory via RAM, and a GPU clocked at a faster speed than Series X. To be honest, I prefer my Series X. Why? The bloody fan on my PS5 is louder. Otherwise hardly any difference.

I said the same thing when I started playing on pc during the ps4 era….unfortunately the ps5 is just an overall better experience than pc. I don’t have to worry about graphics drivers breaking or crashing my favorite games consistently, or windows updates messing with my game files. No more tinkering with steam or game settings to make a game run properly because of a bad update. Or having to buy a new gpu to enjoy a new title. I just love pressing my ps5 controler button and letting the system do the rest. Not to mention those PlayStation exclusives are just to difficult to leave behind. And I’m gonna wait 3 to 5 years to play them on pc. Especially when pc Optimization isn’t really a priority for the majority of game studios/developers.

In slower paced games with less going on, the xbox can shine. But in fast paced and constantly changing perspectives, the ps5 is showing its strength Lots of small overlooked details like fill rate and data pushed through the cpu or gpus tell a lot more. They don't call Cerny the Da Vinci of the industry for nothing! He is a certified genius! The man made a hit game at just 18 with Marbel Madness. And he has had a hand in many, many industry defining games. And his work on the Ps4 lilterally saved playstation! They didn't even ask him to at first. He just starting looking at what a switch to x86 architecture would look like on his own time and dime and he did such a good job they hired him. And I'm glad they did. There is no one I would rather have building future playstations!

PS5 isn't outperforming the XB Series X it all depends on the game and what the resolutions and reflections and frames are favored.. if the PS5 really is outperforming XB series X every game should run better on PS5 and not here and there a higher framerate while raytracing and resolutions on XB Series X are here and there higher.. Why isn't it a topic that developers spend less time on polishing XB games cause seeing the market share differences it would make sense if a developer would choose to spend more time on platform that makes more money then on a platform that makes less money that would make sense to me and since Hell Blade 2 shown what's XB Series is capable of how come people can say for sure that XB hardware is the problem and not the people ?

I respect Digital Foundry's tech and analysis, but (as a lifelong PS owner) who cares? The differences are in framerates you cannot perceive and resolutions you cannot discern between. Xbox has continually failed in Japan for over 20 years at this point. The brand's reputation is irrecoverable at this point there. Even after getting bangers from Japanese developers like Lost Odyssey and Blue Dragon and buying exclusives like Star Ocean Last Hope, the 360 still flopped in Japan. Even now, when a Japanese game releases as a multiplat with an Xbox version, the Xbox version always has minuscule sales compared to the PS5 and/or Switch versions. There really isn't any reason for a Japanese developer to spend any time or money on an Xbox port when it won't even recoup the cost of making that port. That's why smaller studios, like Nihon Falcom, never even bother with Xbox. It's funny when I see Xbox owners complaining on trailers for Japanese games, like the upcoming Gundam Breaker 4, that there isn't a Xbox version. Well if Xbox owners actually bought Japanese games, they wouldn't have this issue.

Mark Cerny made it clear from the beginning that they didn't just make a ps4 pro 2 with an ssd slapped in it. Whats funny is xbox was the first to stress how important it was to build a console with a fast ssd in mind. Sony just invested more into it and they learned from the ps3 mistake. They made the most powerful and also most expensive console at the time but it was a nightmare for devs so 360 had the advantage for a lot of 3rd party games despite being weaker. Sony first party devs took advantage of it but they werent exactly happy to jump through hoops to get the most out of the ps3. Im glad that sony quickly learned and sacrificed backwards compatibility for the time being instead of sticking with a philosophy thats a pain for devs.

It does come down to bottlenecks. Like the Ps3 vs 360 it was the SPU not being used well as one bottle neck and the memory split being the other. Long post, sorry for writing a Bible here, but I own both consoles. Sony will do it again next generation. Microsoft doesn’t have any hardware engineers that are on the same level as Mark Cerny. Microsoft will go for raw specs as usual and ignore lots of other factors. Sony can release a console with “lower specs” than Xbox and the PlayStation would still outperform it just like we’re seeing now. It took 6 years to develop Hellblade 2, which is a 30fps linear as lines walking sim disaster no one liked, with zero exploration and only 2.5 hours of actual “gameplay” and then the other 2.5 hours are cutscenes. No graphics are impressive when your game is only 30fps. Anybody can achieve a pretty 30fps game, they sacrificed playability and frame rate for more polygons. It doesn’t count that way. This gen we’ve seen all 1st party games from Sony offering 60fps, including open world games like Horizon, Ghost of Tsushima, Spider-Man and big exploration action adventure type games like God of War: Ragnarok, Demon’s Souls Remake, Returnal, Stellar Blade, The Last of Us, Ratchet & Clank, and so on. I think one of the big problems with Xbox is the XBL ecosystem. It’s all interconnected with subscription based DRM. It’s always running tasks in the background just like Windows, and Microsoft forgets that these consoles are not supposed to be PCs. If you want a PC, then build a PC, otherwise your console games are going to run like trash on your console because stuff like Quick Resume and other tasks like it are always permanently running. I have seen Digital Foundry saying that they couldn’t figure out what was causing Xbox versions of games to develop weird frame rate drops over time, and it’s quite literally the awful Xbox OS, which really just reminds me of a poor man’s PC hogging up all the performance. Even if you compare a free to play game like Fortnite or Apex, you’ll notice way more popups in the Xbox Series X versions, and worse draw distance too. Xbox hardware just isn’t on the same level and the PS5 SSD tech plays a big part in that. When you own both consoles, you can see the differences yourself.
