The best way to apply VHT is to open up the tail light housing and spray lightly from the inside onto the clear housing. This preserves the glossy finish and makes it look like film.

D F I do agree, but I also think there are circumstances when it's acceptable. The stock 2011 Mustang tail lights are bright as fuck, borderline blinding. (NOT the tail lights with the black square insides) You'd kind of be a dumbass not to lightly darken those, for everyone's safety.

Plasti dip tail lights I honestly thought it wouldn't even work. I've used the nite-shade many times before and it's amazing stuff. I find an even tack coat then 1 heavy coat is all ya need if your just looking to black them a little and remove the in your face bright red lenz look ya get on standard tail lights, without completely blacking them out like you did. cos as you would of noticed as it dries it darkens slightly (As do most colours). I was also gonna say why clear coat them when nite-shade is basically just tinted clear coat that has a high gloss finish. But then you sanded and polished them and it all made sense. Good idea when your after a show room finish.

I tried Nite Shades on my amber front turn signals and found it impossible to get an even shade with out going darker than I wanted. " Plasti-Kote" (not Plasti-Dip) seems to be lighter in the pigmentation in some videos I've watched. I'm going to try it as soon as I can find some. I want to shade a strip of chrome also but I want the chrome to show through. BTW- I bought my Nite Shades at Advance Auto. The guy working said they didn't have it, even though the web site said they did. I needed some self etching primer also and found the Nite Shades while looking for the primer. Good video, great humor.

The best way to tint taillights IMO is to paint them with a blend of 90% black paint and 10% clear mixed and sprayed. I bought these “euro” (ricer) lights for my old Trailblazer SS that had WAY too bright LEDs in them but lit up they had the OEM light pattern and once I sprayed them they were solid black when they were off but lit up they looked almost 90% as bright as stock but overall looked fucking amazing! Get them painted and I promise you’ll love it. 💯

Ill say that I think the vhc night shade does look better, but I plasti dipped my tail lights. If you do it right, it looks a lot better than what is on the right taillight. Your supposed to do 1 or 2 light coats of black and then spray the glossier over it for the rest of the coats. I went with it because it was cheap, easy, I can peel it off if necessary, and I wanted to see how it would work anyway. Been using it for over a year now and still held up great too.

Florida tip: if its mid summer and 638% humidity don't use night shades. Also (totally unrelated) if you happen to use night shade remover don't do it on a platic lens after its been sitting in the hot sun. Comes out the can at -75° F in a 4000° F Florida sun. The lens looked like a spider web when it cracked and was still cloudy from the night shades. Good times

Plasti dipped my tail lights and it looked like the one on the left. Rustoleum peal paint sucks it is a nock off it scratches and looks like crap. When you use the plasti dip you have to use the glossifier that’s what puts the shine on it. It looked good and when it failed inspection I just pealed it off. I also didn’t have to to all that sanding. You can put it on dark or just do a light one spray and then do 3-4 layers of glossifier and it will pass inspection. (Glossifier is clear)

"Don't go too dark if you don't have bright enough lights". You should have specified how that is NOT at all an option with anything other than the peel off Rustoleum. Your first coat will be super dark. You didn't spray anything correctly but if you had you would've realized it's made that way in order to make any level of shade needed. 100% better at creating even shades on both sides than the options you showed, while still keeping that clarity in the matte option. If you don't want to peel it put a clear coat.

Looks cool, you are lucky to be able to do that, in my country it is against the law to do this. Tinting of the light is not allowed and the road cops like to give us grief about it. We are only allowed to change the bulbs to LED and add more lights (like LED bar and spot lights). Well to be honest I really want more light and not less, people tend to drive into one another and if I lid my vehicle up like a xmas tree, then I reduce the chance of it happening to me. oh and for some reason, animals want to use my vehicle to end their miserable existence.....lol

I’ve learned the hard way on nite shade two medium coats is all ya ever need other wise it’ll be to dark an ya get stopped by the cops a lot. Also if ya sand an polish your tail lights prior to spraying ya could avoid having to clear coat an sand them like an it’ll be glossy an look like a factory tinted tail light just makes sure ya do the second coat in the flash window so basically wait bout 15 mins after ya sprayed your first coat do your second medium coat an it’ll be perfect. I’ve played with that stuff a lot An that’s been probably the best finish I’ve seen is doing it that way
