The half-track Madrid you show did not fight in the Spanish Civil war, its crew did, and they are named after battles in the Civil War in which they fought. The vehicles themselves landed in Normandy shortly after D-Day with their Spanish crews that had arrived by ship in Britain from Morocco. It was part of La Nueve (in Spanish "The Ninth") en.wikipedia.org/wiki/La_Nueve In fact, most if not all of the half-tracks in the picture of the liberation parade you show later had Spanish crews. They had been fighting fascism since 1936 in Spain, North Africa and France, and unacknowledged until recently (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/La_Nueve#Aftermath_and_tributes). At the time, they were the most veteran, battle-hardened troops the Allies had.

Ah you're absolutely right Daniel. Christophe told me that the half-track "belonged to La Nueve, who fought against Franco" and in my head, I understood that the vehicle itself fought against Franco. But I realise now that's not quite what he was saying. Thank you for the correction.

@@PatricioGarcia1973 oh,I believe it. I'm just thinking it would be cool if that was part of the museum. In Ontario Canada we have a warplane museum and you can buy tickets to fly in the old warplanes. They would need to find a museum space which facilitated them taking the vehicles on trips. Like a nice sized pond to drive amphibious vehicles through. They could probably do like 5-10 trips a day and sell tickets for them. You also need to make sure your fleet can handle it.

@@tomjoad1363 It's not about cash, it's about space. Most of the Paris region has been forced into redevelopment. UNIVEM started in the close suburbs of Paris, but had to move once already to the current space, in Satory. Now Satory (which is a military base) is being redevelopped, because Versailles and Paris can make a buck by doing so. UNIVEM doesn't have enough time to buy and build a space large enough for the collection. So cash would help, but space would help much, much more.

I went to high school 5 minutes nearby , they took us on a field trip as far as Berlin, so we could learn about WWII and whatever, while that living museum was sitting just here. It's also noteworthy that they are going to kick them out to make room for the Grand Paris train station, which is going to turn the peaceful city of Versailles into a hellhole by connecting it directly to the worst imaginable suburbs in the Paris Area ( Clichy, Bondy, Bobigny, Drancy, Aubervilliers etc... ) .

@@tenalafel Behind the stands at Reims would be a great place for a new museum. It could have racing, military, experimental, farming, steam, motorcycles, bicycles, mopeds..... France loves great museums! It would be a hit! The military vehicles and such, would get all the same visitors, and care, as F1/2 cars on display. It's farmland. Perfect place to build a small off-road course for the military vehicles, to get exercised, and possibly give a few rides, for a fee. Now you just need another patron with some French formula cars, that raced there in the day. All that's needed, is a big building, and parking structure/area, to start. Could host all sorts of events there, to raise capital... And work to preserve the original stands, and pit, so it is future-proofed. It would be easy to get well known personalities involved, and it would be news, because of it's history. The locals need to be included in the plans.

Well done Tim, good on you for trying to help. There has to be a millionaire out there that also loves historic military vehicles. Come on people, think. Also - excellent choice of music. Just perfect given the situation.

Never knew there is the Aerotrains and other cool vehicles to see just two kilometers away from my place. And now that... Since Satory became part of Versailles it was no secret that military premises will be moved out. Versailles is getting bigger and bigger, they have currently 3 projects of new full neighborhoods. It's insane, I've never seen that somewhere else. And for that "unnecessary people" (including volunteers of this museum) are no more welcomed.

Funny how one of the Aerotrains has a blue tarp over most of it, but leaving the name 'Mental 01' - quite appropriate considering.

Random thought, but one of those Aerotrains would go really well in the Art et Metiers museum. If they had a shunt about in the old church section I reckon it would fit - or hang it in the roof with the aircraft :-D Or on display at one of the Paris stations

The aérotrains could be relocated to the Cité du Train in Mulhouse, France's largest railway museum.
@TheTimTraveller

I understand this is unlikely because of the history between the Aerotrains and SNCF. It's a long and complicated story...
@tomjoad1363
@tomjoad1363 Жыл бұрын
@@TheTimTraveller No it's not. The aerotrain is a ingineer dream but was not economically viable : ugly concrete barriers all through the countryside, huge noise, huge consumption of fossile energy, the need to build new stations that would double/act like twin to the existing railways premises... Even the TGV had to adapt since it was first a gaz turbine powered prototype (which can be see along the highway near Starsbourg), and had to switch to an electric propulsion system. And, at the end, the TGV was way cheaper, and made more sens than the Bertin Aerotrain. Don't you ever ask why there are no more Hoovercraft crossing the channel ? You've got your answer.

If I had social media I would try to reach out to the band Sabaton. They too try to preserve history by writing songs about it and they could definitely allow for a bigger reach.

Ah that reminds me they had a new album out that I was meant to listen to, somehow with all the things that came up I never went back to it after the first song! Regarding your suggestion, that's a creative thought that might be doable. But as a fellow mostly social media avoider I'm not the person to try such a thing.
