@@murmaider2 There's definitely some truth there. I dig Jeff's playing as much as anyone, but if you check out the video of his clinic at PIT (or whatever it was in '86), he plays a little bit without all the gear and he sounds much more human. It's cool to respect his achievements, but some people seem to make him out to be superhuman.

I remember the day I heard that Jeff had died. I was in a record store in Auckland NZ and a customer and an employee were talking about it. As a young drummer myself and huge fan of his, I was shocked and simply couldn't believe it. When the employee saw my face, he asked it I was all right and I said "No I'm not. He was my hero". I remember walking home in stunned disbelief. It had a profound effect on me and as I think back on that day many years ago, I still feel my eyes welling up. There will never be another Jeff...

I'm not entirely sure Jeff Porcaro was of this Earth. How can anyone be so talented and yet seemingly modest. I have watched most of his stuff on YT and the most amusing is where he says he wasn't great on drum solos, not a great reader and basically just a timekeeper. No he wasn't , he was one of the greatest drummers to have ever lived. RIP

In jazz, it can be felt as a quality of persistently repeated rhythmic units, created by the interaction of the music played by a band's rhythm section (e.g. drums, electric bass or double bass, guitar, and keyboards). Awesome groove! In the first bar the sticking is LRLRRL(L)RLRRL(L) with a PARADIDDLE starting on the second beat (between toms and snare drum) end a PARADIDDLEDIDDLE starting on the end of the third beat (between the rim of the second tom and the hi-hat). The ghost stroke occurs on the snare on the “i” just after the beat 3 backbeat. In the fourth bar the sticking is pretty much the same, but the PARADIDDLEDIDDLE is played between the toms and the snare drum (2° Tom-1°Tom-Floor Tom-Floor Tom-Snare-Snare, the last stroke is a ghost note). The bass drum plays every single quarter note. Enjoy it!

His patterns were so insidiously interesting to the ear, but not distracting from the rest of the music - it just never sounded as if he was overplaying. All hail the subtle power of ghost notes, eh !

I remember his VHS video that this is from 20 some years ago. This was one of the better things on it. He was underrated in my opinion probably because he wasn't a flashy player. He was always all about enhancing the song.

@@JC-sj2pd He was known on the inside and like most great studio drummers was not a flashy player live. He would never play a drum solo. He did gain notoriety with the massive success of toto but I dont think the average drummer knew much about his recording history, appreciated how solid he was or his ability to lay down just the right track for almost anything. I hope I'm wrong tho.
