Simon was just the perfect guy to replace Jeff - not only a fantastic drummer, but also a very creative, humble man. It's amazing how well he fit into the band.

Did you see my blurb!? He is such a humble guy. Simon is a February baby. Me too. We celebrate birthdays several days apart. It's an honour to share a birthday week and month with a truly talented guy. I had to get used to what I'd heard with 'The Who' as part of 'Toto'. Once I did, for that moment, there was none better.

He had the perfect answer, Come in and Play the Song. If you try to copy another person's style you won't be yourself. That has happened to me, and it's the worst thing that can happen. You will struggle to be someone else and it can't be done and I didn't sound good. I was hesitant, second guessing myself

In an interview with Steve Lukather he said he had a dream that Jeff told him to get Simon Phillips and that that dream was an "Its ok to go on without me" confirmation for Steve as well. AMAZING!!

One of my first drum clinic I ever attended was Simon in 1982. Dude is the SAME GUY - not one ounce of ego when tons of ego would be justified.

When God handed out "Massive Drum Chops" he zapped Jeff and Simon 3x's over. They've both used that Gift to its full. I picked up sticks again, seriously, in 2006. Invested in Gretsch drums in 2007, and play when osteoarthritis in my left knee allows. Popping the clutch on a Pearl Powershifter ain't easy!!! I refuse to give up. Jeff's Dad's drum set method sits ready, whenever I wanna. I listen to these cats for inspiration! ❤

This guy is the perfect guy to replace anybody in pretty much any band......as he says...just play the music ....with your own style His catalogue of the people he s played with speaks volumes of Simon.....fabulous drummer and tho never met him i feel like when he speaks its like your having afternnon tea with him in a little cafe in the lake district......lovely man...

He was a session player in the UK, SAME as Jeff was here. When Toto called... this beautiful cat started canceling dates, hopped a plane and showed up. He is now a Naturalized US Citizen. Was on tour when the Thomas Fire was literally at his studio doorstep. He has gone through much, and is a class act. Zero ego. I have a friend who once booked Jeff for sessions. She says Jeff was the same... zero ego. No wonder Si fit right in with Luke and Paich and Mikey. ❤

I grew up with Porcaro groove in my ears. Jeff influenced a 10 year old piano player (me). Simon was with The Who, then...so I knew who he was, but was more into what Jeff was doing. When Si joined Toto, it took me 3 years to retune my classically trained piano player ears to his style with That band. He did YeomN's work for Toto, and once locked in with Mike Porcaro, you could build a 8,000 sq ft house on that groove. Simon is now Naturalized US Citizen. He took the test! Got to see him in Atlanta for 2013. I had zero VIP. Opener was "Child's Anthem". This man shook steel reinforced concrete at Chastain. He is a lovely gent, but a complete monster behind a kit. Just as Jeff was, humble, and full of integrity.

Better to remember Jeff as one helluva player. But the show must go on. The group must evolve. You can replace him but never get him again. That time passed.

I can relate to what he said with replacements. As an outsider looking in, it's hard to imagine anyone else playing the songs of a particular group. That's just how I feel, and apparently many others. Simon Phillips is an amazing drummer, and I'm sure playing Jeff's patterns ain't no problem. Thanks Simon for putting that into perspective, especially as a drummer who has just recently started putting my own stamp on copy tunes. And I agree, Jeff Porcaro was an awesome drummer as well. Definitely influenced me with those shuffle type grooves.

Simon is an amazing drummer, I was already a big fan before he joined Toto (since the Mike Oldfield days I guess). "Two Socks" from the first Protocol album is still one of my most favorite songs. And yet, when he joined Toto I didn't "feel" it, like the songs (the older songs that Jeff originally did at least) just had to played by Jeff, in the "Jeff style". So I was a huge Simon fan, a huge Toto fan, but them joining together was never really a hit with me. Weird... 😅 Even weirder, I did love the Los Lobotomies stuff he did with Luke. "Hero with a thousand eyes" is a total banger.
