1964 5.5 HP Johnson Impeller and service part 2

Musher deeds, thank you for this video!! I was able to take apart my 64 5. 5 Johnson outboard all the way down to the impeller because of it. Mine was a little bit easier. I was able to pull the driveshaft out of the lower unit and simply slide the impeller off the bottom. It's slid right out. I had to pay attention where the water pump aligned with the other rod for reassembly. My problem was that the key that holds the impeller to the rod fell out. I found it inside the water pump casing, slid it back into the hole in the driveshaft, just let the impeller over it and reassembled and it works fine now.

How did you set the fuel to air mixture? I took my carb off to clean the float which was sticking and I can’t seem to get the fuel to air ratio adjustments correct. Thanks!

Thanks for the video I have a 59 evinrude 5.5 Couldn't figure why it wouldn't spit water untill I seen the beginning of your video about the thermostat. So I pulled mine and it cools fine. Why is a thermostat necessary?

I got almost the same motor evinrude 1962 5524r I believe. Is it 16to1 or 24 to1? Also I'm using it on a 12 ft v jon, is it enough to get it to plane? So far it opens up great after adjusting the mix speed on wot and on low speed sometimes it kinda kicks

Have you had to replace the pull start yet? I have the same motor and I snapped the rope today.

No I haven't, mine hasn't broke. But we've been using it with success this duck season.

I just had an issue with my starter but I cleaned it up and now its engaging. No rope issues yet.

Have you cleaned the carb yet?

Matt LaFleur Yes, I did that when I first got it. It was very simple. I was careful not to get any carb cleaner on anything rubber so I wouldn't need a rebuild kit. But it ran great beforehand anyway. It really is an awesome motor, I wish they still make them.

Musher Deeds - How'd you go about setting the HSN/LSN after you put it back together? The Seloc manual says something like 1-2 turns, but on mine it is closer to half a turn. I didn't spend a lot of time messing with it after I fired it up cause I thought it wasn't pumping enough water. Turns out it might be fine though, based on the last few seconds of your part 2

I was watching this video because I thought I was going to need to change the impeller on my '62 5.5.... the water comes out the exhaust pretty much identically as yours at the end of your video, sort of spurting. I thought it was supposed to be a solid stream. Totally fine though huh?

pwntagerz yes, totally fine. if water stops coming out of the exhaust you've got problems. This motor was just stolen after a friend borrowed it and took it to Martha's Vineyard.

I have the same engine. And same impeller issue. This video came in handy. Who the F&@k puts the shift disconnect UNDER the powerhead?? What a pain in the dick.
