Mushoku Tensei has those really off putting moments, especially early on. Once you look past them and the story cogs really begin to get moving, the show becomes an absolute BANGER. I've shown many friends MT and almost all of them were initially put off for much the same reasons (notably w/ something around episode 6-8 iirc), but after sticking with it they all absolutely love the show.

So, the character's internal monologue is gross, for sure, and it's a good idea to approach it as you are. It lays it on pretty thick in the early episodes, but tapers it off some after a while (though not completely), partly just cause the initially trashy mindset of the protagonist goes through character development as you would expect. I will say that, despite the perverted protagonist, this series has one of the most mature stories in all of anime; and by mature, I mean, in the intellectually stimulating, "Wow, it actually dives into situations and relationships like this - and so well at that!" sense. Combined with its great animation and OST, I definitely recommend sticking with it, even through the eichi cruft.

It truly is a very mature story. Which is quite rare. Considering our society is fairly immature, this is why we get this "controversy" bs. @MJ-jd7rs
@MJ-jd7rs 2 жыл бұрын
Not true, it'd be easier if he was developing from scratch, rather he's developing from a negative 8. Many reasons for this, his trama, his ptsd, porn addiction, and his social isolation just to name a few. He's not a 'good person' in any sense starting off. But this is the story of him trying to be a better person when given a second chance at life. But even a marked improvement on his character will still come across as 'shitty' to society. (going from a -8 to a -1 is a huge improvement, but you're still a -1.). To truly understand him you have to put yourself in his shoes. To imagine living your life isolated from the world, So addicated to hentai and porno that you skip your parent's funeral to masterbate. To acknowledge yourself as a POS and simply accepted it as 'what you are going to be until you die', and THEN to have the impossible happen, to be given a second chance at life. And then to accept the hardest thing to accept in the world, that THAT'S the starting point of the main character. I love this story and I love Rudy, flaws and all, for one simple reason. He's always trying. He's always trying to be better, to not waste this new life he got.

ep. 6 is the worst part, as opposed to popular belief. But realistically, it's not *that* bad. Objectively speaking. If people get so triggered by Rudy, i don't even know how much value there is to watch, as it's most likely missing a lot of what it offers. A big part. People still simp for mass murdering, psychopath characters, but apparently Rudy is too much. It's too complex and at odds with the current social programming and immaturity of the "adults" in our society. Unable to even handle fiction and art in a mature manner. I am indeed annoyed at this point with the greatly *overly* negative image portrayed of him. It's a real joke how people can easily overlook much worse, even in very similar premise, in terms of the MC, only worse. As long as the character looks cool and is OP. There are a couple of elements that if they were changed, so much will be overlooked, even though nothing of substance is changed. Superficial things. But apparently superficial is a big impact for many.(e.g. if previous life "Rudeus" was attractive instead of, you know)

The series is awesome and the best possible choice to be introduced to the Isekai genre in general as many of the tropes of Isekai were first developed in this story. Rudeus' tendency to depravate behavior is a theme early in the show, and largely a product of his horrible past life. However, one of the great traits of the show is how he slowly grows as a person away from his past life traumas and bad habits. It's really a bit of a coming of age story of sorts. Really worth the trip.

Trust me you will love Mushoku Tensei a lot ! Glad you react to it :) What I don't understand, sometimes, is why so many people who watch animes are offended by hints of sex or controversial scenes. I mean: cinema, in a broad sense, often does worse, often shows a lot more things and often deals with much more controversial subjects. (I do not say it is right or wrong, but just that some people talked about mushoku tensei as if it was a criminal show, trying to make people who love it feel guilty. If we go on this path, then we can criticize so many great shows, for example Demon slayer and Uzui having 3 wives.) Of course, the character has a repelling personality, but that's the point. Showing the evolution of a character who discovers himself, who realizes that he makes mistakes, that he thinks badly. Too often, we have anime with flat characters, too perfect, which does not fit with reality to make people fantasize. Plus, Rudy is writed in a way that since he didn't had any social life or human contacts for years, it would be weird to have someone thinking perfectly from the start. By showing how "depraved" his personality is at the moment, you will love even more his evolution and you will probably even start feeling empathy at some point. Of course, you don't have to validate this way of doing things, but you have to accept that it's closer to a form of reality, even if this reality is not glamourous at all. Sorry for this long message, I rarely post but since I know how controversal it can be, I wanted to give my opinion :)

So serious some question. I dropped the anime after the first season because I did not see any real character development from the MC. Does it really get any better? From what I´ve seen and read the mc will stay a major creep and will just build up a harem of his groomed "girlfriends", only difference is that they grow up. I never read that the mc ever reflects on his behavior towards literal children. I think the problem with the series lies in how it portrays controversial topics. I think we should be able to write about those things but in this show his creepiness is only used for "comedy". If you want to show controversial scenes than you have to respect the subject matter. Also can someone explain how this supposed antisocial man, who was too afraid to even go outside, suddenly became a womanizer and very sociable guy? While at the same time he seems to not be able to drop his pedo-like behavior, he is just able to socialize perfectly and looses his fear of the outside immediately in maybe 2-3 episodes. I would have thought a person living by himself for 20-30 years would struggle way more with socializing.

@@mrlupaco8417 It's not for comedy, man. If you can't digest what has been shown in s1 already. (s1 is ep. 1-23) I don't see any point for you to try and continue the story. If you mean only part 1 of s1. (1-11) Still same point. There is so much development, and even more reflection there, already. By the wording you use, it seems you are too triggered to see these things. (i don't mean it in an insulting way or some such). On the "comedy" point i'll give some examples and explanations. Scenes are not made equal. This is one of the main reasons why MT is so good and how characters are realistic. People act differently and not like robots that are given a set characteristic that they never deviate from. Characters can have relapses and even regressions, which is also extremely realistic. Particularly with people who have severe trauma. Some scenes may seem more comedic, those are usually presented from Rudy's perspective of how he views certain actions and behaviors. Not taking them that seriously, like a prank. There is no malicious intent behind them. (and if we want to be objective, it never harms anyone). It shows a characteristic that is extremely likely for someone with his past to develop. It follows logically and so it needs to be there. It is to a degree something that he needs to work on and improve.(which he clearly does after part 1, to a point that Eris becomes worried he might not be truly interested in her). Other scenes (like in ep.8) are a lot more serious. And have lasting consequences for the characters. Having a lot of layers and perspective to consider. The scenes are presented accordingly to the characters. They are not written this way or that on a whim. E.g. for comedic purpose or for x,y,z purpose by itself. "I think the problem with the series lies in how it portrays controversial topics." - You have a point. But maybe not what you meant. Seems you think "respects the subject matter" means to be PC and present in an overly subjective manner that fits your beliefs. The problem for people actually comes from portraying these things very realistically, which makes them hit harder. Especially in anime, people are not used to that level of realistic portrayal, honesty and maturity. Honesty in portraying things realistically rather than as "this will be under the gaze of a viewer" This is another point that makes MT as good as it is. It only cares to tell the story as best as it can, it is not going to compromise the integrity of the story and characters because of some people getting upset over x or y scene. It is not constructed like so many animes and shows by trying to tailor it to some audience or demographic. Another clear issue is, being unable to even cope with the premise, ignorance and judgement over understanding. Why you throw p-words so easily. When the situation is far more nuanced and there are so many issues with that view. Why refuse to acknowledge that. This is a NEW life. He is physically a child in all respects(brain development, hormones). The whole point is to live a new life, not being completely impeded by a previous one that he tries desperately to forget and move on from. Should he develop relationships with adult women ? Because that will work out so well for the future... it makes no sense (MANY more aspects can be considered, message will balloon like crazy if i get into it) Yes, his mental state is one of the aspects that needs to be considered. Though it is another vague thing. There are children that are incredibly smart and "mature". As well as many adults who are very childish and immature. It is not a black and white thing. As some treat it "A 34 yo in a child's body" is ignorant. There is a big misunderstanding about mental vs physical age and the dynamics there, but it can be complicated. I don't say any of this in a demeaning way, but i have to remain honest in my assessments, which i count as common respect. Watching this anime without being obsessed over judgement and dogmatic belief systems, makes the difference. Being nuanced and having various perspectives to look at it from, is a sign of a great story. And all these perspectives need to be taken into account to have a comprehensive picture and see things the way they are. There is a crap ton that can be said about Rudeus as a character. Even besides the pervert part. He does have a lot more serious flaws to work on than that. Realistically, there is nothing inherently wrong with being perverted. There is so much dissonance and hypocrisy regarding that in our society. Anyway, projecting our crap onto it is what creates issues. and prevents relative objectivity. If i have to generalize Rudeus's character. He is quite respectful(even early on, he truly respected Roxy), empathetic, reflective and has immense positive influence on many. He has flaws and makes mistakes, like any real person would. Especially with such background. He doesn't lose his shut in issues all of a sudden either, it is shown all the time that they are still there. (even in ep.3 where he doesn't look at the bullies when speaking, as he is of course nervous and afraid, afterwards he even says just the thought of being bullied because of hair color almost makes him pee himself) He often has misunderstandings, socially, and does dumbass things at times. Even with quite large consequences in part 2 and especially the final 3 episodes. His trauma still playing an immense role, as it explores it even further. (though many seem unable to understand how bad what he went through is, it is almost a miracle he didn't murk himself, many in similar situations do, or try to). Spoiler alert, it is not going to disappear even in later seasons. Given his context, his attachments become extra strong. Though in general, he has still spent many years socializing with people already, so why would he be completely inept at it. He's not an idiot. He was basically forced to do it. Another common issue i see is, people failing to notice his blatant dissonance between his impulsive (sometimes messed up) thoughts and his real actions. Things that he himself finds messed up soon after. And he never follows up on, more so, he sometimes ends up doing the exact opposite (e.g. actually doing various things to make Sylphie strong and independent, teaching her magic, as he understood and agreed that they were becoming perhaps too attached to each other, both ways. He could have easily given up on the job and returned. But it's the false image of him vs reality. His feelings are genuine, when he feels he hurt someone, he genuinely regrets and may even fall into despair, not least because of his self-esteem problems and self hate, these are his major flaws that he needs to work on, he is emotionally fragile and can be taken advantage of in various ways). Rudues has many misconceptions about himself too. So can't take what he thinks for granted. Another realistic aspect. TLDR Doubt you gonna read that haha I don't mean to sound demeaning etc. but i prefer to be straight and honest rather than BS fake nice. Take it as you will. I can't really be concise with such large points so a lot of this may seem jumbled. I could expand greatly on many of them.

Good choice, this anime is likely to become my favorite anime of all time if it keeps going the way it is. The MC is the best, finally an isekai MC that actually fits the concept of an isekai, which is that you get a second chance to be better. Most Isekai mc's are weebs who get infinite power and it's just boring wish fulfillment, Mushoku Tensei does the wish fulfillment in the way that matters. Not "what if you were all powerful", but "what if you got a second chance to be better?". Yeah, Rudeus is extremely flawed, if he wasn't, he wouldn't need a do over. And if he was instantly fixed as soon as he got in the new world, he wouldn't need a do over either. But in this world he gets a chance to grow up again and have the proper development that he lacked in his initial life, and watching him try to be better, and slowly grow as a person is just cheffs kiss.

It's true. Still, to be fair, the execution is what makes it a masterpiece. Both the writing of the source material and the immense effort and passion of the studio doing the adaptation. As it is more of a passion project rather than the next anime to pump out by X studio. If we get a s2 and s3 with the same level of quality... oh, boy. It will be insane. Rudeus gets way too much crap though, by judgement freaks that are really in no position to criticize and lack any degree of objectivity.

The thing about Rudeus, or at least his previous persona, is that it feels real. He wasn't the edgy boy or the casanova that is somewhat perfect regardless his past, he's life was trash, and that made him a trash person. Extremely secluded people either turn into a mix of depresion and vices, and Rudeus is closet to the later. He's been in the new world for around 3 years but he has done nothing other than play with water, he hasn't changed at all because nothing really important has happened to him yet to get him straight, on the contrary, it only fueled his vices.

You see a lot of characters in anime that, like Rudeus, are supposed to have been shut ins, but most of them act normal once you take them out of their reclusive life. Rudy is one of the few that actually acts like someone whose spent most of his life holed up in a room. So yes, he has some unsavory parts to his personality, but it makes sense that he would. This show has quite a few flawed characters that struggle with various issues and vices. Still, they're people that are trying to be the best they can. This show is also quite a bit different than the Slime show and imo, quite a bit better.

Actually, Mushoku Tensei Web Novel was the last series that jumpstarted the popularity of the genre(after SAO) in the light novel industry in early 2010s. Re:Zero become popular later, after it got an anime release in 2016.

@@angkear6267 In the light novel industry and similar, yeah i definitely agree, Moshoku is seen as the grandfather or the genre itself. In the anime industry however - I'd still argue that it was Re:Zero that kicked it off to be honest, it's kind of debatable if whether or not SAO is an isekai, I at least never thought about it as one. Re:Zero is at the very least definitely part of the genre, and was popular enough to spark others to create similar shows. Just my take though :)
@angkear6267
@angkear6267 2 жыл бұрын
@@FrederikSeerupNielsen At least from what I read from an interview, Isekai was already a trend when MT author started working on the WN back then in 2012 to capitalise on this trend, the same year as Re:zero WN released. Even in anime industry, many isekai anime were being adapated in 2016. remember konosuba, a parody on Isekai genre was released in Winter 2016, one season prior to Re:zero anime release. So I don't agree, that Re:zero anime kickstarted the isekai popularity in the anime industry. I just think the anime industry took few years to catchup because anime need to be in production for few years before they can be released. I post below excerpt from Isekai wiki as I think it's pretty relevant to my argument. "The 2012 anime adaptation of Sword Art Online popularized the isekai genre in anime, which led to more isekai web novels being published on Narō and a number of Narō novels being adapted into anime. It was around this time that the term "isekai" was coined." "The isekai genre became so popular during the early- and mid-2010s that it started to generate backlash, both in Japan and overseas, from those who felt that it was overcrowding the greater manga & anime market." "Later titles such as Knight's & Magic and The Saga of Tanya the Evil (both 2010 debut) involved their protagonists dying and being reincarnated in a different world.[12][21] The most influential isekai novel in that regard was Mushoku Tensei (2012 debut), which began as a Narō novel and popularized the reincarnation sub-genre of isekai while establishing a number of common isekai tropes. Mushoku Tensei was the most popular Narō novel for a number of years, and thus served as a point of reference for numerous isekai writers that followed."

Mushoku tensei isn't something I would recommend for people who dislike ecchi, because there is a lot of reference to sex in it. Especially from Rudeus' perspective it can come off as creepy, but given his past trauma with the subject, and the two decades spent in self-indulgence free from any criticism that could result in growth in his previous life, it certainly becomes understandable. Also, if it helps, Roxy is older than him, and has definitely had 'experience' by this point. It's a good story (I've read the manga, light novels, and webnovels through to and including the redundancy chapters), but yeah, would not blame you for dropping it because of those reasons.
@HiddenStr3ngth

True, i can see people who are uncomfortable with ecchi having a problem watching it. Though i maintain it isn't really ecchi. It's merely telling the story as it needs to, these scenes are there for legitimate reasons and are generally not framed as fan service. But to communicate certain things. Which in some cases may be sexual in nature. And sexual themes naturally exist as it is a big part of human relationships and a natural part of biology.

Please continue this show. The premise of this series is the journey of a "trash" human being into someone respectable. There will be moments of uncomfortableness, and that is expected, but keep in mind the Author WANTS you to be uncomfortable. You are not meant to approve of his actions, instead, you are meant to cheer him on as he slowly becomes a better person over the course of the series. Yeah, and the anime is already toned down from the LN. Art is not association, but I genuinely got uncomfortable reading some of the fetishization going on in the LN, and not in a 'good because it made me think about difficult topics' uncomfortable, but in a 'this is borderline pedophilia' uncomfortable. The show smartly tones down some of the excesses of the LN, but not completely, and they're genuinely the weakest part of the story. They seem to serve more as gratuitous fanservice than marker posts for Rudeus' character development. And yes, I'm aware of a plot point in the books that some people use to deflect Rudy's actions, but this felt more like an excuse from the author to justify his scenes than actual good characterization or storytelling. Still, though, MT the anime is a masterclass in production and directing, and the show itself is great despite the bits that made me cringe. And moving on, Season 2 will hopefully have fewer cringeworthy moments, although I'm only speculating here because I dropped the LN series after 5 or so volumes.
