ABOUT TODAY'S GUESTS:
Three time Grammy winner MICKEY HART is best known for his many decades as an integral part of an extraordinary expedition into the soul and spirit of music known as the Grateful Dead. Hart's insatiable desire to uncover the connection between life, rhythm and the origins of existence has led him into a number of different arenas. He testified, along with Dr. Oliver Sacks, about rhythm and music therapy before the Senate Subcommittee on Aging. His scholarly endeavors have garnered him involvement with such esteemed institutions as the Smithsonian, the Library of Congress, NASA, and the Institute of Neurologic Function. While embracing traditional world-music rhythms, Hart weaves sonifications of brainwaves, nature and the cosmos into his musical compositions. His work with Dr. Adam Gazzaley and Dr. Nina Kraus, leading neuroscientists, seeks to identify rhythms that stimulate parts of the brain, leading to innovative approaches to healing. In 1991 his album Planet Drum held the top spot on Billboard's World Music chart for six months and was the first Grammy ever awarded in the World Music category. Having found rhythm everywhere and in everything, Mickey invites us to share in his polyrhythmic journey.
The pre-eminent classical tabla virtuoso of our time, ZAKIR HUSSAIN is appreciated as one of the world’s most esteemed and influential musicians, one whose mastery of his percussion instrument has taken it to a new level, transcending cultures and national borders. A child prodigy already touring internationally while still in his teens, Zakir has been at the helm of many genre-defying collaborations including Shakti, Remember Shakti, Masters of Percussion, Diga, Planet Drum, Global Drum Project, Tabla Beat Science, Crosscurrents, Sangam and in trio with Bèla Fleck and Edgar Meyer. As a composer, he has scored music for numerous feature films, and has composed three concertos, the most recent enjoying the distinction as first-ever for tabla and orchestra. He is the recipient of countless awards, including 2 Grammys, Padma Bhushan, the National Heritage Fellowship, two honorary doctorates and Officier in France’s Order of Arts and Letters. Voted “Best Percussionist” by both the Downbeat Critics’ Poll and Modern Drummer’s Readers Poll over several years, Zakir was honored with SFJazz’s Lifetime Achievement Award in 2017, for his “unparalleled contribution to the world of music”.
