The elements of creating music and building peace are often analogous In his 2017 TEDx Asheville talk, LaMotte explores the metaphors associated with making music and shows how they offer framework for understanding peace work. Listening, practice, interrupting the script and striving for harmony (rather than unity) are just a few examples. At the peak of an 18-year career as an internationally-touring musician, David LaMotte quit playing music publicly from 2008-2010 in order to pursue a master's degree in Peace and Conflict Resolution in Australia, accepting a Rotary World Peace Fellowship in order to do so. These days, about half of his work is performing, and the other half is traveling, learning, speaking and leading workshops around the world. LaMotte served on the AFSC Nobel Peace Prize Nominating Task Group, is a consultant on Peace and Justice issues for the NC Council of Churches, founded the non-profit, PEG Partners, in Guatemala and has written 2 books that address justice and peace work. LaMotte has traveled to conflict zones around the world (Bosnia, Belfast, Bethlehem, etc.) to engage in conflict work, teach, and learn from front lines peacemakers. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

Lovely message! So fantastic that you got to be with John Louis and learn directly from him. Serendipity brought me to this TED talk due to my intense curiosity about the transformative power of the Clue Clucks Clowns experience of using humor and creative actions to illuminate lightness and laughter. I too agree that 'unity' isn't the ultimate goal when there is conflict...but listening to one another and being 'in relationship.' Some of the best music has so many variable sounds and minor keys. This expression is so very beautiful.

BRAVO! Thank You, David, and all those involved, for this excellent video. Thank You for the the excellent message. I Love all of what you say here and how you say it ... I especially appreciate why you prefer the word harmony over unity ... Yes! I consider music an important background setter for Peace (and many other things as well) ... music provides a focus for us as we connect and we can connect even if just singing together or playing instruments together ... and it does provide an example of how we can be together in peace (or together for other purposes as well) ... I've got to find out more about you David ... Have you heard about World Beyond War? Love & Peace to All
