Music Note class guide and strategy for Gloomhaven

I remember watching this guide when i first played the digital version 2 years ago or so. In my current playthrough i ended up going for mostly the same things, but rerolled at level 9 and absolutely like the new setup more. The one major change is basically that i keep the wound song and take shadow puppets at level 9. The level 9 song is not that much better than the wound song imho. Depends on your playstyle. If you attack the same monster multiple times, the level 9 song would definitely outperform it. If you oftentimes run into a situation where you can afford to simply leave someone to die and attack multiple enemies, i think wound might be nearly as good. Especially if you can effectively kill anything with 2 health or lower by simply disarming / stunning it. Or if you have other things that can add true damage through shields, like a certain doom effect, a certain poison damage effect, or a certain character loving to play with rocks. With the damage song settled, you are now free to take shadow puppets. Which really helps make the best use of some other cards, like the bottom of disorienting dirge. And just movement in general. Taking +move boots also makes for a pretty decent offensive move, especially when coupled with melody and harmory for a somewhat late initiative turn where you can move, deal damage, move tons more, and potentially have like 4+ enemies hit each other. Tho for this setup to work im currently not playing with echoing aria. I consider taking that with me again once my squidface reaches 9 for a switch in groupplay strategy.

I won a loot treasure chest scenario with the Song of Speed. Just took three rounds for the Scoundrel to zoom all the way to the chest.

Summon items work so well with her. Her deck is so stacked with great attack modifiers and she has such fast initiative that they can get a lot of big hits or status effects off first, only downside is being targeted more often.

Yeah if you can keep them alive they can be great. Locking down the enemies a lot does give them a fighting chance though!

Don't know if it's RAW, but in digital, Song of Speed's +1 to allies' range interacts incredibly with Crag's "Clear the Way." Clear the Way, it seems, is a ranged attack that targets all within range 1 of the targeted space. With song of speed up, it targets everything within range 2, which means, if you use Earth, it's an Unstable Upheaval that you don't have to burn. It's certainly not the most overpowered ability, but I'm thoroughly enjoying it, and I often enjoy the bonus to movement to keep everyone advancing through the dungeons at a respectable pace; the +1 range is just a nice bonus.

Yes that would interact like that (same as hawk helm interaction) in Digital. Certainly a nice bit of synergy there for sure, but I like Unstable for the war hammer big stun potential too. It's still a great jump in with no fear card that I would struggle to not use. I love that Music Note has a song for every occasion and situation, it really makes her a great combo enabler.

Disorienting Dirge is perfect when you have a sunkeeper in you team. The Sunkeeper move you with a control card into a new room or near the enemies and you can you this card to curse a lot. This card is also enchanced with disarm. i love this card.

Disarm enhancement is naughty. It definitely elevates the card from S tier to like S+++++++ tier 😀

great guide. i honestly don't like wistful wounding nearly as much as you but i do but use it mostly as a sideboard if i'm going to hit a bunch of shielded stuff. I like to hear the in depth thoughts of WHY you pick some cards rather than just what you pick.

Somehow, no guide to this character mentions it doesn't have a movement card with jump. I don't know if that's not so relevant in other people's playstyles but when I went through the cards and noticed that, I felt that was one area where I needed to either get an enhancement or go for winged boots.

I think Winged Shoes are a good low prosperity item for sure, but as you are ranged and have unlimited range on your song buffs I have found movement over obstacles/enemies/traps more forgiving. There are a lot of scenarios in GH though where a lack of jump could trip you up so yeah a good suggestion for sure.

For level 3 i was removing defensive ditty, because the 2 shield from Echoing Aria and the sunkeeper is a good combo. I also like Power ballad +1Attack and the call to action with the strenghen effect. And with combination of sunkeeper +1Attack you can do some nice damage with the spellweaver. When you have summons and are 4 Player, i like to have more damage and advantage :) For level 2 i was choosing Change Tempo for the 5 Movement. good for long dungeon, because the soothsinger don't have much movement like other characters. i was often behind everyone else, so this was my decision.

Change Tempo is not a bad pick if you unlock her early on in your campaign game, but most people will look to use comfortable shoes or serene sandals instead of movement cards at high prosperity/wealth levels.

Great guide! I played the Soothesinger to level 9 on tabletop and am helping a friend of mine get used to her on digital; linked him this guide. Can I ask how you get the digital characters max xp and perk points? I would love to fiddle around with that but I don't know how.

Just need to grind out the XP and finish the class achievements for all the perk points I’m afraid. There’s no quick way to do it you but you can reset your card choices whenever you like which is how I film my guides. Glad you liked the video :)

Another good video. I haven't played the Soothsinger much and I have just started with her. Looks like a fun character. On another note, I know there is a reset mercenary option. Does that reset the mercenary back to 0 XP and reset their cards or does it keep your current XP level and reset all your cards so you could choose different cards?

It does keep your current XP. Guildmaster mode is very flexible with reseting heroes and selling enhancements.

We have used the retalioate 2 song in combination with a "Sun" retaliate focused tank and I have been able to do about 6 damage (or 2 for ranged enemies, 5 to 8 to melee enemies) to about 6 enemies at the same time while receiving about 4 total damage during a round. It is ridiculous, everything just passively dies xD

Awesome guide! I just started playing a Soothsinger after retiring my old Brute character, and I thought that the double curse perks were good. Am I wrong? Why shouldn't I choose those perks in your opinion? Btw I'm starting at level 4.

This character has insane perks but you don't attack very often unless you go for a different build. Disorienting Dirge can often put most if not all of the 10 available curses in the monsters deck very quickly (with 3/4 characters) so you don't really need perks to help you curse more.

Asking for a damage build would mean doing a video, but is there any chance you can exaplin in a little paragraph how to do it?

It mostly revolves around the item's versatile dagger or balanced blade. Both of these increase the damage of your default attack actions. You use a lot of default attack actions with your great early initiatives to get to draw from your incredible modifier deck. It's not particularly fun in my opinion as playing default actions every turn gets old, but it can be quite powerful. You also take some of the more attack focussed cards at level up too.

I think I answered my own question. It's because the monster share a global modifier deck.

I played the spellsinger so differently to you, I barely moved it, using cards that let you move or attack via allies, or buff allies at any range. Its possible to play the class and be 1 or even 2 rooms behind the rest of the party. I am not sure it was a good decision mind you its dull as dishwater playing like that.

Well you could argue cursing, disarming, and stunning every round can get pretty dull too. I think that's a reoccurring problem with some of the best classes in the game, they are so good at one thing that you end up just incentivised to do the same thing over and over again.

In a four player party, would it be silly to take both level 3 or 4 cards instead of either of the options at 5? Party is Music Note, Sun, Eclipse and Two Minis. I think we have enough dmg that the bottom Move 3 Attack 3 on Melody and Harmony isn't that useful.

I wouldn't take Inspiring Anthem (level 4) instead of them but I could see you taking both level 3's.

Not a bad cheap option actually seeing as you'll often stay in one place too. Better at 3 and 4 player count than 2 to dodge the target 2's.

Why a lvl9 Card gives XP? what should i do with XP on Max LVL?

It is there for completing some scenario battle goals to earn check marks for perks. There is no official thing to do with the extra XP after level 9 so you only need to track it if you are doing one of these battle goals.

this class is absolutely broken ... best song is actually the curse song with that bless curse bottom card.. 10 curses in enemy deck then you use enemy disadvantage song late game... also u can stun 5-6 enemies a round if needed..

Yep it’s a nuts class once you hit level 4. I don’t like the curse song because actually it’s too slow compared to stamina potion to play disorienting dirge twice early game. Then you can use your curse aoe’s to top them up if need, but you will probably just disarm or stun them anyway :)
